CLC channels mediate passive Cl<sup>-</sup> conduction, while CLC transporters mediate active Cl<sup>-</sup> transport coupled to H<sup>+</sup> transport in the opposite direction. The distinction between CLC-0/1/2 channels and CLC transporters seems undetectable by amino acid sequence.
