Begonia medogensis, a new species of Begoniaceae from Western China and Northern Myanmar.

ABSTRACT: Begonia medogensis JianW.Li, Y.H.Tan & X.H.Jin, a new species of Begoniaceae, is described and illustrated by colour photographs. Begonia medogensis is distributed in western China and northern Myanmar. It has erect stems, is tuberless, has many triangular to lanceolate leaves, base slightly asymmetric, margins remotely and irregularly denticulate; staminate flowers have 4 perianth segments, with outer 2 segments broadly ovate, inner 2 spathulate; pistillate flowers have 5 perianth segments, unequal, outer 4 broadly ovate, inner 1 spathulate. The new species is assigned to section Platycentrum and can easily be distinguished from the other species in the section.

Project description:Since 2016, KIB (Kunming Institute of Botany) and CPC (Centre for Plant Conservation of Vietnam) have conducted several surveys in the transboundary karst regions in Northern Vietnam and Southern China and seven new species in the genus Begonia Linn. (Begoniaceae) are firstly described. Amongst them, two species, Begonia albopunctata Y.M. Shui, W.H. Chen & H.Q. Nguyen and B. erectocarpa H.Q. Nguyen, Y.M. Shui & W.H. Chen, respectively belong to section Sphenanthera with berry fruits and section Leprosae with clavate berry fruits; four species, B. gulongshanensis Y.M. Shui & W. H. Chen, B. minissima H.Q. Nguyen, Y.M. Shui & W.H. Chen, B. mollissima Y.M. Shui, H.Q. Nguyen & W.H. Chen, B. rhytidophylla Y.M. Shui & W.H. Chen, belong to section Coelocentrum with parietal placentation; one species, Begonia bambusetorum H.Q. Nguyen, Y.M. Shui & W.H. Chen, belongs to section Diploclinium with 3-loculed ovary and capsules. The diagnostic characters of these species are described and illustrated in the text and photographs.

Begonia shenzhenensis, a new species of Begoniaceae from Guangdong, China.

Project description:Begonia shenzhenensis D.K.Tian & X.Yun Wang, sp. nov., a new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum of Begoniaceae from Shenzhen of Guangdong province, China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, it is primarily similar to B. coelocentroides in the same section but differs by its denser hairs on leaf, petiole, and pedicel, abtuse anther apex, hairy ovary, and narrower adaxial fruit wing. Based on only one small population found to date, its conservation status is assigned to Critical Endangered according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

An updated checklist of Begonia (Begoniaceae) in Laos, with two new species and five new records.

Project description:Two new species of Begonia L. (Begoniaceae), B. laotica (sect. Parvibegonia) and B. hypoleuca (sect. Reichenheimia), from north Laos are described and illustrated. Begonia augustinei, B. dryadis, B. lancangensis, B. sizemoreae and B. sillentensis subsp. mengyangensis were newly recorded taxa in Laos. Furthermore, an updated checklist of Begonia of Laos is also compiled.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of begonia (Begoniaceae).

Project description:Begonia L. (Begoniaceae) is the sixth largest genus in the world which consists of more than 2,039 species. Many species of Begonia have highly ornamental leaves and flowers, so they are mainly used for ornamental purposes, and some species can also be used as medicines or vegetables. Begonia gulongshanensis is a newly discovered species in 2018 which occurs exclusively in Jingxi county in Southern China, however, there are few studies on the molecular biology and phylogeny of this species currently. Therefore, we report its complete chloroplast genome sequence for the first time, hoping to provide a foundation for its future phylogenetic analysis. The chloroplast genome of B. gulongshanensis was 169,153 bp in size, which contained a large single-copy region of 75,998 bp, a small single-copy region of 18,063 bp, and two inverted repeat regions of the same 37,546 bp. The total GC content was 35.51%. The genome encodes 42 transfer RNA genes, 8 ribosomal RNA genes and 90 protein-coding genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that the genetic relationship between B. gulongshanensis and the other three begonias was very close, but there was still certain distance.

Taxonomic studies on Begonia (Begoniaceae) in Myanmar I: three new species and supplementary description of Begonia rheophytica from Northern Myanmar.

Project description:Three new species of Begonia (B. chenii, B. putaoensis and B. crassitepala) belonging to Begonia section Platycentrum and a supplementary description of B. rheophytica with a detailed description of female flowers from Putao, Kachin State, Northern Myanmar, are described and illustrated. All the new species are endemic to Northern Myanmar and can be easily distinguished from other species among the section Platycentrum. A detailed description, photographs, habitat, distribution and a comparison with the most related allied species for all new species are provided.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Begonia versicolor Irmsch. (Begoniaceae).

Project description:Begonia versicolor (Code: MK434325) is a perennial plant with unique and precious ornamental value, exhibiting gorgeous leaf morphology and graceful flowers, therefore, it is popular with many horticulturalists and plant hobbyist. The complete chloroplast genome of B. versicolor were reported in this article. It had a typical quarter structure as a circular of 169,506 bp, composed by a large single-copy region (LSC, 75,868 bp), a small single-copy region (SSC, 18,290 bp), and two inverted repeats (IRs, 75,258 bp each). Genome annotations showed that it contained total 185 genes, including 133 protein coding genes (PCGs), 44 transfer RNA (tRNAs), and 8 ribosome RNA (rRNAs). The percentage of total GC content was 35.57%. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that Begoniaceae was closely related to Cucurbitaceae family.

Rediscovery and amended descriptions of Begonia kingdon-wardii (Begoniaceae) from North Myanmar.

Project description:Begonia kingdon-wardii Tebbitt was rediscovered in 2014 from Myanmar after 67 years based on its last collection in 1937. Its previously unknown female flower and inaccurate morphology of leaf and ovary have been additionally described. This species belongs to Begonia sect. Sphenanthera (Hassk.) Warb. due to its dioecious habit, 3-locular ovary, berry fruits and thick placenta segments. Morphologically, it is similar to Begonia gulinqingensis S. H. Huang & Y. M. Shui in the leaf shape, placentation and fruit shape, but different in its dioecious plants, pliciform leaves, two-petalled female flowers and berry fruits. The rediscovery of this amazing living species will attract significant interest for scientific research and horticultural application.

Genomes shed light on the evolution of Begonia, a mega-diverse genus.

Project description:Clarifying the evolutionary processes underlying species diversification and adaptation is a key focus of evolutionary biology. Begonia (Begoniaceae) is one of the most species-rich angiosperm genera with c. 2000 species, most of which are shade-adapted. Here, we present chromosome-scale genome assemblies for four species of Begonia (B. loranthoides, B. masoniana, B. darthvaderiana and B. peltatifolia), and whole genome shotgun data for an additional 74 Begonia representatives to investigate lineage evolution and shade adaptation of the genus. The four genome assemblies range in size from 331.75 Mb (B. peltatifolia) to 799.83 Mb (B. masoniana), and harbor 22 059-23 444 protein-coding genes. Synteny analysis revealed a lineage-specific whole-genome duplication (WGD) that occurred just before the diversification of Begonia. Functional enrichment of gene families retained after WGD highlights the significance of modified carbohydrate metabolism and photosynthesis possibly linked to shade adaptation in the genus, which is further supported by expansions of gene families involved in light perception and harvesting. Phylogenomic reconstructions and genomics studies indicate that genomic introgression has also played a role in the evolution of Begonia. Overall, this study provides valuable genomic resources for Begonia and suggests potential drivers underlying the diversity and adaptive evolution of this mega-diverse clade.

Characterization of the complete chloroplast genome of Begonia fimbristipula (Begoniaceae).

Project description:Begonia fimbristipula is a plant of perennial flowering plants in the family Begoniaceae. In this article, the complete chloroplast genome of B. fimbristipula was studied and illustrated to add more genetic information. The chloroplast genome is 169,436 bp in length as the circular, which exhibits a large single-copy region (LSC) of 77,058 bp, a small single-copy region (SSC) of 18,128 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 37,123 bp in each. The overall nucleotide composition of chloroplast genome is: 31.8% A, 32.6% T, 18.0% C, 17.5% G, and the total GC content 35.5%. A total of 142 genes were annotated that included 91 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 43 transfer RNA (tRNAs), and 8 ribosome RNA (rRNAs). Phylogenetic relationship shows that Begonia fimbristipula is more closely related to Begonia pulchrifolia on genetic relationships using the Maximum-Likelihood (ML) method.

Development of 18 novel microsatellite primers for Begonia fimbristipula (Begoniaceae), an endangered medicinal plant in China.

Project description:PREMISE OF THE STUDY:Begonia fimbristipula (Begoniaceae) is a medicinal herb distributed in the Chinese provinces of Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang, and it is on the verge of extinction due to habitat destruction and deterioration of its ecosystem. Here we developed a set of highly polymorphic microsatellite markers for population genetic and conservation studies of this endangered medicinal plant. METHODS AND RESULTS:Using the Fast Isolation by AFLP of Sequences COntaining repeats (FIASCO) protocol, 18 polymorphic microsatellite markers were identified within 48 individuals from two geographic locations. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.208 to 1.000 and from 0.291 to 0.812, respectively. These microsatellite markers were cross-amplified in five related Begonia species, and six loci were successfully amplified in all species. CONCLUSIONS:These 18 markers will be useful for better conservation and utilization of wild resources of B. fimbristipula and other Begonia species in the future.
