Multi-atlas segmentation (MAS), while less accurate than DCNN in many applications, tends to generalize well to unseen datasets with different characteristics from the training dataset. Several groups have attempted to integrate the power of DCNN to learn complex data representations and the robustness of MAS to changes in image characteristics. However, these studies primarily focused on replacing individual components of MAS with DCNN models and reported marginal improvements in accuracy. In this study we describe and evaluate a 3D end-to-end hybrid MAS and DCNN segmentation pipeline, called Deep Label F</pubmed_abstract><journal>Medical image analysis</journal><pubmed_title>Deep label fusion: A generalizable hybrid multi-atlas and deep convolutional neural network for medical image segmentation.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC10009820</pmcid><funding_grant_id>R01 EB017255</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>R01 AG055005</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>P30 AG010124</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>R01 AG040271</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>RF1 AG069474</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>R01 AG069474</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>P30 AG072979</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>R01 AG056014</funding_grant_id><pubmed_authors>Wisse LEM</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Khandelwal P</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Lim S</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Luther A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Xie L</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Glenn T</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Wang J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Wolk DA</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Ravikumar S</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Yushkevich PA</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable><name>Deep label fusion: A generalizable hybrid multi-atlas and deep convolutional neural network for medical image segmentation.</name><description>Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) achieve very high accuracy in segmenting various anatomical structures in medical images but often suffer from relatively poor generalizability.
