This study highlights the process that was used to develop an antibiogram to monitor resistance at a secondary-level health facility to aid empirical clinical decision making in a sub-Saharan African county. This retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study used 3 years of cumulative data from January 2016 to December 2018. Phenotypic data was manually imputed into WHONET and the cumulative antibiogram constructed using standardized methodologies according to CLSI M39-A4 guidelines. Pathogens were identified by standard manual microbiological methods and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion</pubmed_abstract><journal>Antibiotics (Basel, Switzerland)</journal><pubmed_title>Using an Antibiogram Profile to Improve Infection Control and Rational Antimicrobial Therapy in an Urban Hospital in The Gambia, Strategies and Lessons for Low- and Middle-Income Countries.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC10135392</pmcid><funding_grant_id>MC_UU_00031/7</funding_grant_id><pubmed_authors>Muhammad AK</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Roca A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Forrest K</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Nadjm B</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Ceesay B</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>De St Maurice A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Umukoro S</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Adejuyigbe B</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Mirasol R</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Secka O</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Okomo U</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Darboe S</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Nwakanma D</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Garner OB</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Dogan TL</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable><name>Using an Antibiogram Profile to Improve Infection Control and Rational Antimicrobial Therapy in an Urban Hospital in The Gambia, Strategies and Lessons for Low- and Middle-Income Countries.</name><description>Antimicrobial resistance is a global health threat and efforts to mitigate it is warranted, thus the need for local antibiograms to improve stewardship.
