Thus, ART does not completely halt or reverse the pathological processes behind HAND. Adjuvant mitigating treatments are, therefore, prudent. Lithium treatment is known to promote neuronal brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF). Lithium is also an inhibitor of glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3-β). We analyzed biomarkers obtained from participants in a randomized placebo-controlled trial of lithium in ART-treated individuals with moderate or severe HAND. We assayed markers at baseline and 24 weeks across several pathways hypothesized to be affected by HIV, inflammation, or degeneration. Investigated biomarkers included dopamine, BDNF, neurofilament light chain, and CD8 + lymphocyte act</pubmed_abstract><journal>Journal of neurovirology</journal><pubmed_title>Blood and cerebrospinal fluid biomarker changes in patients with HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment treated with lithium: analysis from a randomised placebo-controlled trial.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC10185609</pmcid><funding_grant_id>#2018-02532</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>#681712</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>860197</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>#ADSF-21-831377-C</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>UKDRI-1003</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>#ADSF-21-831376-C</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>#ADSF-21-831381-C</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>#101053962</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>JPND2021-00694</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>ALFGBG-965885</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>#ALFGBG-71320</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>101053962</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>681712</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>#201809-2016862</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>#FO2019-0228</funding_grant_id><pubmed_authors>Gisslen M</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Joska J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Thela L</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Koutsilieri E</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Decloedt E</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Hye A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Zetterberg H</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Lesosky M</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Scheller C</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Gleich M</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable><name>Blood and cerebrospinal fluid biomarker changes in patients with HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment treated with lithium: analysis from a randomised placebo-controlled trial.</name><description>HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) persist in the era of antiretroviral therapy (ART).
