A poor understanding of the impacts of fire on ecosystems and their biodiversity exacerbates this challenge, particularly in tropical regions where few studies have applied consistent analytical techniques to examine a broad range of ecological impacts over multiyear time frames. We compiled 16 y of data on ecosystem properties (17 variables) and biodiversity (21 variables) from a tropical peatland in Indonesia to assess fire impacts and infer the potential for recovery. Burned forest experienced altered structural and microclimatic conditions, resulting in a proliferation of nonforest vegetation and erosion of forest ecosystem properties and biodiversity</pubmed_abstract><journal>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America</journal><pubmed_title>Impacts of fire and prospects for recovery in a tropical peat forest ecosystem.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC11047076</pmcid><funding_grant_id>RL-2019-054</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>NE/T010401/1</funding_grant_id><pubmed_authors>Boyd NC</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Supriatna J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Adul</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Houlihan PR</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Yulintine</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Harrison ME</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Struebig MJ</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Healy W</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Santiano</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Marchant NC</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Frank van Veen FJ</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Erb WM</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Imron MA</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Ripoll Capilla B</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Thornton SA</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Hendri</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Kulu IP</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Deere NJ</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>D'Arcy LJ</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Iwan</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Kusin K</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Holly B</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>de Rivera Ortega OR</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Sugardjito J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Spencer KL</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Purwanto A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Cheyne SM</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Aragay Soler J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Jeffers KA</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Morrogh-Bernard HC</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Green H</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Husson SJ</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Page SE</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Asti HA</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Collins SA</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Nasir D</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable><name>Impacts of fire and prospects for recovery in a tropical peat forest ecosystem.</name><description>Uncontrolled fires place considerable burdens on forest ecosystems, compromising our ability to meet conservation and restoration goals.
