While palpable implants can be easily removed, deep or non-palpable implants pose complications during extraction, often requiring open surgery. This ultrasound-guided removal technique offers a minimally invasive, safe, and effective alternative, providing real-time control over the implant and neurovascular structures. Our study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and challenges of this implant removal method.
Methods
In this retrospective observational study, all cases referred to our institution for ultrasound-guided removal of contraceptive implants, from June 2022 </pubmed_abstract><journal>Quantitative imaging in medicine and surgery</journal><pagination>7791-7802</pagination><full_dataset_link>https://www.ebi.ac.uk/biostudies/studies/S-EPMC11558487</full_dataset_link><repository>biostudies-literature</repository><pubmed_title>Ultrasound-guided minimally invasive removal of deep contraceptive implants: outcomes and challenges.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC11558487</pmcid><pubmed_authors>Isern-Kebschull J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Soler-Perromat JC</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Garcia-Diez AI</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Del Amo M</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Rios J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Bartolome-Solanas A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>de Guirior C</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Carmona F</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Porta-Vilaro M</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Tomas X</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable>

Background
Contraceptive arm implants, such as Implanon NXT®/Nexplanon®, are reversible methods of birth control that have gained global popularity, with over 20 million worldwide users.
