Although the functions of β-CATENIN in chondrocytes have been extensively investigated through gain-of-function and loss-of-function mouse models, the precise downstream effectors through which β-CATENIN regulates these processes are not well defined. Here, we report that the matricellular protein, CCN1, is induced by WNT/β-CATENIN signaling in chondrocytes. Specifically, we found that β-CATENIN signaling promotes CCN1 expression in isolated primary sternal chondrocytes and both embryonic and postnatal cartilage. Additionally, we show that, in vitro, CCN1 overexpression promotes chondrocyte maturation, whereas inhibition of endogenous CCN1 function inhibits</pubmed_abstract><journal>Journal of bone and mineral research : the official journal of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research</journal><pubmed_title>CCN1 Regulates Chondrocyte Maturation and Cartilage Development.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC4822413</pmcid><funding_grant_id>R01 AR057022</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>R01 AR038945</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>P50 AR054041</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>R01 AR063071</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>R01 AR053717</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>P30 AR061307</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>P30 AR061307</funding_grant_id><pubmed_authors>Sheu TJ</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Hoak D</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Shen J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Jonason JH</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Zhang Y</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Hilton MJ</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Zuscik MJ</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>O'Keefe RJ</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable><name>CCN1 Regulates Chondrocyte Maturation and Cartilage Development.</name><description>WNT/β-CATENIN signaling is involved in multiple aspects of skeletal development, including chondrocyte differentiation and maturation.
