The chemistry relies on the direct photoexcitation of enamines to trigger the formation of reactive carbon-centered radicals from iodosulfones, while the ground-state chiral enamines provide effective stereochemical control over the radical trapping process. The phenylsulfonyl moiety, acting as a redox auxiliary group, facilitates the generation of radicals. In addition, it can eventually be removed under mild reducing conditions to reveal methyl and benzyl groups.</pubmed_abstract><journal>Angewandte Chemie (International ed. in English)</journal><pubmed_title>Enantioselective Formal α-Methylation and α-Benzylation of Aldehydes by Means of Photo-organocatalysis.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC5396335</pmcid><funding_grant_id>681840</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>SEV-2013-0319</funding_grant_id><funding_grant_id>2014 SGR 1059</funding_grant_id><pubmed_authors>Melchiorre P</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Filippini G</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Silvi M</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable><name>Enantioselective Formal α-Methylation and α-Benzylation of Aldehydes by Means of Photo-organocatalysis.</name><description>Detailed herein is the photochemical organocatalytic enantioselective α-alkylation of aldehydes with (phenylsulfonyl)alkyl iodides.
