Here, we report that RING-finger protein 138 (Rnf138) is highly expressed in testes, especially in spermatogonia and spermatocytes. The role of Rnf138 in spermatogenesis was examined using a Rnf138-knockout mouse model. Rnf138 deficiency resulted in increased apoptosis in spermatogenic cells, loss of proliferative spermatogonia, delayed development of spermatozoa and impaired fertility. The proportion of PLZF+Ki67+ cells within the PLZF+ population decreased in the knockout mice. The phenotype was further assessed by RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), which determined that the expression levels of many genes involved in spermatogenesis were altered in the testi</pubmed_abstract><journal>Cell death &amp; disease</journal><pagination>e2795</pagination><full_dataset_link>https://www.ebi.ac.uk/biostudies/studies/S-EPMC5520686</full_dataset_link><repository>biostudies-literature</repository><pubmed_title>Rnf138 deficiency promotes apoptosis of spermatogonia in juvenile male mice.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC5520686</pmcid><pubmed_authors>Xu L</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Zong S</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Han R</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Lu Y</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Miao S</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Yao R</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Wang H</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Li K</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Wang L</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Zhong S</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Fu J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Luo Y</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Han D</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Song W</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable><name>Rnf138 deficiency promotes apoptosis of spermatogonia in juvenile male mice.</name><description>Spermatogenesis, the process by which haploid sperm cells are produced from a diploid precursor cell, is essential for sexual reproduction.
