Upon strain-promoted alkyne-azide cycloaddition (SPAAC) with an azide, which does not require a Cu catalyst, the structure becomes significantly more flexible and an increase in fluorescence is observed. Upon addition of Zn(ii), the fluorescence is enhanced further.
