The Amazonian species <i>Piperindiwasii</i> is distinguished from <i>P.scutilimbum</i> from Panama and northern Colombia by the narrowly spatulate leaf base extension. <i>Pipernokaidoyitau</i> is characterised by the presence of larger leaves and longer spikes than similar species, <i>P.anonifolium</i> and <i>P.hostmannianum</i>.
