Dendrin is a podocyte-specific protein suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of IgAN. Upon cell injury, dendrin translocates from the slit diaphragm to the nucleus, where it is suggested to induce apoptosis and cytoskeletal changes, resulting in proteinuria and accelerated disease progression in mice. Here we investigated gene and protein expression of dendrin in relation to clinical and histopathological findings to further elucidate its role in IgAN/IgAV.
Methods
Glomerular gene expression was measured using microarray on 30 IgAN/IgAV patients, 5 patients with membranous nephropathy (MN) and 20</pubmed_abstract><journal>Nephrology, dialysis, transplantation : official publication of the European Dialysis and Transplant Association - European Renal Association</journal><pagination>311-321</pagination><full_dataset_link>https://www.ebi.ac.uk/biostudies/studies/S-EPMC9923709</full_dataset_link><repository>biostudies-literature</repository><pubmed_title>The role of dendrin in IgA nephropathy.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC9923709</pmcid><pubmed_authors>Levin A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Schwarz A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Molne J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Herthelius M</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Ebefors K</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>He L</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Sun Y</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Witasp A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Nystrom J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Wernerson A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Wennberg L</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Barany P</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Hulkko J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Patrakka J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Hultenby K</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Bruchfeld A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Betsholtz C</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable>

Background
Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) and its systemic variant IgA vasculitis (IgAV) damage the glomeruli, resulting in proteinuria, hematuria and kidney impairment.
