High-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) opened up new possibilities regarding the analysis of pathological alterations associated with neurodegenerative processes. Recently, we have shown that quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) enables visualization and quantification of two major histopathologic hallmarks observed in MSA: reduced myelin density and iron accumulation in the basal ganglia of a transgenic murine model of MSA. It is therefore emerging as a promising imaging modality on the differential diagnosis of Parkinsonian syndromes.<h4>Obj</pubmed_abstract><journal>Therapeutic advances in neurological disorders</journal><pagination>17562864221143834</pagination><full_dataset_link>https://www.ebi.ac.uk/biostudies/studies/S-EPMC9950607</full_dataset_link><repository>biostudies-literature</repository><pubmed_title>Parkinson's disease or multiple system atrophy: potential separation by quantitative susceptibility mapping.</pubmed_title><pmcid>PMC9950607</pmcid><pubmed_authors>Herrler J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Laun FB</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Jukic J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Marxreiter F</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Kassubek J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Gron G</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Regensburger M</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Mennecke A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Winkler J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>German A</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Hanspach J</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Lambrecht V</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Schmidt MA</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Muller HP</pubmed_authors><pubmed_authors>Dorfler A</pubmed_authors></additional><is_claimable>false</is_claimable>

<h4>Background</h4>Due to the absence of robust biomarkers, and the low sensitivity and specificity of routine imaging techniques, the differential diagnosis between Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) is challenging.
