The seed is a conserved sequence located at the 5'-end of the miRNA, and its specific pairing with the target mRNA is essential for target regulation. Surprisingly, we observed that miR-106a can bind to targets in place of let-7a despite the entirely different seed sequences. This binding does not depend on the seed sequence of miR-106a but instead relies on the extensive pairing on its 3'-end that shows homology with the let-7a seed sequence. miR-106a binding does not induce direct regulation of the bound targets. It shields them from seed-mediated pairing with let-7 family members, leading to competition for pairing with the same sequence in the target mRNA and resulting in two opposing functional outcomes: target repression by let-7a or target shielding by miR-106a. We conclude that by preventing let -7a from repressing oncogenic targets, the noncanonical binding of miR-106a contributes to cancer development.","dates":{"publication":"2026/08/14"},"accession":"GSE303559","cross_references":{"GSM":["GSM9130679","GSM9130677","GSM9130678","GSM9130686","GSM9130687","GSM9130684","GSM9130685","GSM9130682","GSM9130683","GSM9130680","GSM9130681","GSM9130688","GSM9130689","GSM9130697","GSM9130698","GSM9130610","GSM9130695","GSM9130696","GSM9130693","GSM9130694","GSM9130691","GSM9130692","GSM9130690","GSM9130619","GSM9130617","GSM9130618","GSM9130615","GSM9130616","GSM9130613","GSM9130614","GSM9130699","GSM9130611","GSM9130612","GSM9130620","GSM9130621","GSM9130628","GSM9130629","GSM9130626","GSM9130627","GSM9130624","GSM9130625","GSM9130622","GSM9130623","GSM9130631","GSM9130632","GSM9130630","GSM9130639","GSM9130637","GSM9130638","GSM9130635","GSM9130636","GSM9130633","GSM9130634","GSM9130642","GSM9130643","GSM9130640","GSM9130641","GSM9640524","GSM9640523","GSM9640526","GSM9640525","GSM9640522","GSM9640521","GSM9130648","GSM9130649","GSM9130646","GSM9130647","GSM9130644","GSM9130645","GSM9130653","GSM9130654","GSM9130651","GSM9130652","GSM9130650","GSM9130659","GSM9130657","GSM9130658","GSM9130655","GSM9130656","GSM9130664","GSM9130665","GSM9130662","GSM9130663","GSM9130660","GSM9130661","GSM9130705","GSM9130703","GSM9130704","GSM9130701","GSM9130668","GSM9130669","GSM9130702","GSM9130666","GSM9130667","GSM9130700","GSM9130675","GSM9130676","GSM9130673","GSM9130674","GSM9130671","GSM9130672","GSM9130670"],"GPL":["18573"],"GSE":["303559"],"taxon":["Homo sapiens"],"PMID":["[42598859]"]}}
