This process can occur when variant DNA is unidirectionally transferred from partial gene copies (or silent loci) into an expression locus, and resembles gene conversion. Using genes from Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis we have demonstrated that it is possible to use PCR amplification, followed by high-throughput DNA sequencing and a novel assembly process, to detect individual antigenic variation events. This approach promises to dramatically improve studies of the extent and nature of antigenic variation systems in a variety of species."],"repository":["ENA"],"description_synonyms":["Merismopedia, study, Antigen Variation, Variability, Antigenic Switching, Diversity, Gonococcus, Antigenic Diversity, species., Antigenic Variability, Switching, Antigen Switching, Antigen, Antigenic, Nesseira, Neisseria Trevisan 1885, \"Merismopedia\" Zopf 1885, Variation, surface antigen variation"],"name_synonyms":["Merismopedia, \"Merismopedia\" Zopf 1885., Nesseira, Gonococcus, Neisseria Trevisan 1885"],"additional_accession":[]},"is_claimable":false,"name":"Neisseria","description":"Investigation of antigenic variation in Neisseria species using high throughput sequencing","dates":{"last_updated":"2025-09-24","first_public":"2013-05-31"},"accession":"PRJNA174839","cross_references":{"taxon":["482"]}}
