This organism is a halophilic methylotroph first isolated from coastal seawater. Methylotrophs are able to grow on single carbon compounds, like methanol and methylamines, but not on methane. Methylophaga thalassica uses the ribulose monophosphate pathway (RuMP) for assimilating carbon from methyl compounds. The methyl groups of the these compounds are first oxidized to formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is condensed with rubulose monophosphate in the first step of the RuMP pathway forming hexulose phosphate.
