ABSTRACT: Excerpt from a larger study which characterized the transcriptional effects of a spinal cord contusion injury in rats. This is the data from the almost chronic contusion state (35 days) at the injury site (Thoracic 8) - where we saw significant changes in several areas, including cholesterol metabolism genes. Microarray technology was used to examine gene expression changes following contusive injury of the adult rat spinal cord. To obtain a global understanding of the changes triggered by the injury, differential gene expression was examined spatially, using tissue samples from the epicenter of injury as well as 1 cm rostral and 1 cm caudal to the epicenter, and temporally, at 3 h, 24 h, 7 days, and 35 days post-injury.
