Transcription profiling of bone biopsies from postmenopausal females identifies 8 genes highly associated with bone mineral density

ABSTRACT: Postmenopausal females (50 85 years) representing a wide range of Bone mineral densities (BMDs) were consecutively registered, excluding persons who had diseases and medications known to affect bone remodeling. Low energy fracture(s) occurred in 32 (38 %). Trans-iliacal bone biopsies (84) were submitted to Affymetrix microarray expression analysis to study the relationship between BMD or osteoporosis and gene expression.

It is useful to incorporate biological knowledge on the role of genetic determinants in predicting an outcome. It is, however, not always feasible to fully elicit this information when the number of determinants is large. We present an approach to overcome this difficulty. First, using half of the available data, a shortlist of potentially interesting determinants are generated.
