Ventricular fold oscillations lower the vocal pitch in rhesus macaques

ABSTRACT: Vocalizations of rhesus macaques recorded under ex-vio and in-vivo experimental conditions. Ex-vio experiments: Laryngeal samples were extracted from fresh cadavers of 6 adult rhesus macaques (Mm1, Mm2, Mm3, Mm4, Mm5, Mm6). Each larynx was mounted on a vertical tracheal tube, to which warm humid air was injected from an air pump. To induce the vocal fold oscillations, the glottal air space was closed by manually adducting the arytenoid cartilages. The dynamics of the vocal and ventricular folds was monitored using a high-speed video camera (Fastcam Nova S6, Photron, Tokyo, Japan) with a borescope (BAL-72718HT, Shodensha, Osaka, Japan). The acoustic sound and the sound pressure level (SPL) were measured by an omnidirectional microphone (Type 4192, Bruel and Kjaer, Tokyo, Japan) and a sound
