Androgen Regulated Genes in Intact Human Prostate Tissues: Relation to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostate Cancer

ABSTRACT: To investigate gene expression profiling in intact human prostate tissue xenografts in mice, following the addition or subtraction of androgens. 58 prostate samples were implanted into castrated or testosterone-treated mice for 5 different lengths of time. Samples were compared to a control pool created by combining day zero tissue samples from all patients

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate carcinoma (CaP) are linked to aging and the presence of androgens, suggesting that androgen regulated genes play a major role in these common diseases. Androgen regulation of prostate growth and development depends on the presence of intact epithelial-stromal interactions. Further, the prostatic stroma is implicated in BPH. This suggests that epithelial cell lines are inadequate to identify androgen regulated genes that could contribute to BPH and  ...[more]
