Host response transcriptional profiling of typhoid fever infected Nigerian children

ABSTRACT: We were able to obtain distinct gene expression profile between children with typhoid fever and other bacteremic infections. Peripheral blood of Nigerian children with typhoid fever and other bacteremic infection were obtained in Paxgene tubes. Total RNa were extracted using Paxgene blood RNA kit and 4x44K (G4112F) human GE array were processed according to standard Agilent procedures

Background
Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi) is a human-specific pathogen that causes typhoid fever, and remains a global health problem especially in developing countries. Its pathogenesis is complex and host response is poorly understood. In Africa, typhoid fever can be a major cause of morbidity in young infected children. The onset of the illness is insidious and clinical diagnosis is often unreliable. Gold standard blood culture diagnostic services are limited, thus rapid ...[more]
