ABSTRACT: This was a randomised study in terminally anaesthetised female cross-bred Large White pigs. Initially, animals were anaesthetised and instrumented for continuous physiological monitoring and sampling; blood samples were collected upon initiation of the surgery (line-in, T = -150 minutes). Following surgery, animals’ physiology was allowed to recover for 60 minutes prior to pre-injury (T= -30 minutes) samples being taken. The injury phase comprised three components, a soft tissue injury created using a captive bolt (4 shots to the right thigh), controlled haemorrhage (30% blood volume), and a snare around the liver lobe was pulled to initiate an uncontrolled haemorrhage. Animals then entered a 30 minute “buddy aid” phase after which samples were collected (post-injury; T = 30 minutes). Anim
