Stimulus salience conflicts and colludes with endogenous goals during urgent choices.

ABSTRACT: Selecting where to look next depends on both the salience of objects and current goals (what we are looking for), but discerning their relative contributions over the time frame of typical visuomotor decisions (200-250 ms) has been difficult. Here we investigate this problem using an urgent choice task with which the two contributions can be dissociated and tracked moment by moment. Behavioral data from three monkeys corresponded with model-based predictions: when salience favored the target, perceptual performance evolved rapidly and steadily toward an asymptotic level; when salience favored the distracter, many rapid errors were produced and the rise in performance took more time-effects analogous to oculomotor and attentional capture. The results show that salience has a brief (∼50 ms) but inexorable impact that leads to exogenous, involuntary capture, and this can either help or hinder performance, depending on the alignment between salience and ongoing internal goals.

Coupling of saccade plans to endogenous attention during urgent choices.

Project description:The neural mechanisms that willfully direct attention to specific locations in space are closely related to those for generating targeting eye movements (saccades). However, the degree to which the voluntary deployment of attention to a location is necessarily accompanied by a corresponding saccade plan remains unclear. One problem is that attention and saccades are both automatically driven by salient sensory events; another is that the underlying processes unfold within tens of milliseconds only. Here, we use an urgent task design to resolve the evolution of a visuomotor choice on a moment-by-moment basis while independently controlling the endogenous (goal-driven) and exogenous (salience-driven) contributions to performance. Human participants saw a peripheral cue and, depending on its color, either looked at it (prosaccade) or looked at a diametrically opposite, uninformative non-cue (antisaccade). By varying the luminance of the stimuli, the exogenous contributions could be cleanly dissociated from the endogenous process guiding the choice over time. According to the measured timecourses, generating a correct antisaccade requires about 30 ms more processing time than generating a correct prosaccade based on the same perceptual signal. The results indicate that saccade plans are biased toward the location where attention is endogenously deployed, but the coupling is weak and can be willfully overridden very rapidly.

Saccade metrics reflect decision-making dynamics during urgent choices.

Project description:A perceptual judgment is typically characterized by constructing psychometric and chronometric functions, i.e., by mapping the accuracies and reaction times of motor choices as functions of a sensory stimulus feature dimension. Here, we show that various saccade metrics (e.g., peak velocity) are similarly modulated as functions of sensory cue viewing time during performance of an urgent-decision task. Each of the newly discovered functions reveals the dynamics of the perceptual evaluation process inherent to the underlying judgment. Remarkably, saccade peak velocity correlates with statistical decision confidence, suggesting that saccade kinematics reflect the degree of certainty with which an urgent perceptual decision is made. The data were explained by a race-to-threshold model that also replicates standard performance measures and cortical oculomotor neuronal activity in the task. The results indicate that, although largely stereotyped, saccade metrics carry subtle but reliable traces of the underlying cognitive processes that give rise to each oculomotor choice.

Brain activation during cognitive reappraisal depending on regulation goals and stimulus valence.

Project description:Neural bases of cognitive reappraisal may depend on the direction of regulation (up- or downregulation) and stimulus valence (positive or negative). This study aimed to examine this using a cognitive reappraisal task and conjunction analysis on a relatively large sample of 83 individuals. We identified regions in which activations were common for all these types of emotion regulation. We also investigated differences in brain activation between the 'decrease' and 'increase' emotional response conditions, and between the regulation of negative and positive emotions. The common activation across conditions involved mainly the prefrontal and temporal regions. Decreasing emotions was associated with stronger involvement of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, while increasing with activation of the amygdala and hippocampus. Regulation of negative emotions involved stronger activation of the lateral occipital cortex, while regulation of positive emotions involved stronger activation of the anterior cingulate cortex extending to the medial prefrontal cortex. This study adds to previous findings, not only by doing a conjunction analysis on both emotional valences and regulation goals, but also doing this in a bigger sample size. Results suggest that reappraisal is not a uniform process and may have different neural bases depending on regulation goals and stimulus valence.

Reinforcer predictability and stimulus salience promote discriminated habit learning.

Project description:Instrumental (operant) behavior can be goal directed, but after extended practice it can become a habit triggered by environmental stimuli. There is little information, however, about the variables that encourage habit learning, or about the development of discriminated habits that are actually triggered by specific stimuli. (Most studies of habit in animal learning have used free-operant methods.) In the present experiments, rats received training in which a lever press was reinforced only in the presence of a discrete stimulus (S) and the status of the behavior as goal-directed or habitual was determined by reinforcer devaluation tests. Experiment 1 compared lever insertion and an auditory cue (tone) in their ability to support habit learning. Despite prior speculation in the literature, the "salient" lever insertion S was not better than the tone at supporting habit, although the rats learned more rapidly to respond in its presence. Experiment 2 then examined the role of reinforcer predictability with the brief (6-s) tone S. Lever pressing during the tone was reinforced on either every trial or on 50% of trials; habit was observed only with the highly predictable (100%) relationship between S and the reinforcer. Experiment 3 replicated this effect with the tone in a modified procedure and found that lever insertion contrastingly encouraged habit regardless of reinforcer predictability. The results support an interactive role for reinforcer predictability and stimulus salience in discriminated habit learning. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

Inhibition of eye blinking reveals subjective perceptions of stimulus salience.

Project description:Spontaneous eye blinking serves a critical physiological function, but it also interrupts incoming visual information. This tradeoff suggests that the inhibition of eye blinks might constitute an adaptive reaction to minimize the loss of visual information, particularly information that a viewer perceives to be important. To test this hypothesis, we examined whether the timing of blink inhibition, during natural viewing, is modulated between as well as within tasks, and also whether the timing of blink inhibition varies as a function of viewer engagement and stimulus event type. While viewing video scenes, we measured the timing of blinks and blink inhibition, as well as visual scanning, in a group of typical two-year-olds, and in a group of two-year-olds known for attenuated reactivity to affective stimuli: toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Although both groups dynamically adjusted the timing of their blink inhibition at levels greater than expected by chance, they inhibited their blinking and shifted visual fixation differentially with respect to salient onscreen events. Moreover, typical toddlers inhibited their blinking earlier than toddlers with ASD, indicating active anticipation of the unfolding of those events. These findings indicate that measures of blink inhibition can serve as temporally precise markers of perceived stimulus salience and are useful quantifiers of atypical processing of social affective signals in toddlers with ASD.

Economic choices can be made using only stimulus values.

Project description:Decision-making often involves choices between different stimuli, each of which is associated with a different physical action. A growing consensus suggests that the brain makes such decisions by assigning a value to each available option and then comparing them to make a choice. An open question in decision neuroscience is whether the brain computes these choices by comparing the values of stimuli directly in goods space or instead by first assigning values to the associated actions and then making a choice over actions. We used a functional MRI paradigm in which human subjects made choices between different stimuli with and without knowledge of the actions required to obtain the different stimuli. We found neural correlates of the value of the chosen stimulus (a postdecision signal) in ventromedial prefrontal cortex before the actual stimulus-action pairing was revealed. These findings provide support for the hypothesis that the brain is capable of making choices in the space of goods without first transferring values into action space.

Using salience and availability to promote sustainable and healthy food choices in hospital cafeterias.

Project description:Sustainable diets can achieve considerable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and improvements in human health, but changing dietary behavior remains a challenge. We assessed the impacts of two behavioral insights strategies on bridging the intention-action gap related to sustainable and healthy food choices amongst hospital cafeteria patrons. In a pilot survey of hospital staff (N = 1,165), 56% identified limited awareness and availability of sustainable food as barriers to purchasing, although 46% were extremely willing to try sustainable dishes. We examined increasing salience (Study 1), varying availability (Study 2a), and decreasing availability (Study 2b) on sustainable and healthy dish purchases in three hospital cafeterias. Each study ran for seven weeks from March to April, 2023. In total, 10,616 dishes were purchased. In Study 1, increasing salience was associated with significant uptake of sustainable and healthy dishes, but the effect disappeared once the salience intervention was removed. In Study 2a, increasing availability of sustainable dishes corresponded to a significant increase in purchases of sustainable dishes, while decreasing availability in Study 2b followed a downward trend in purchases, suggesting that availability drove dietary choices. We recommend hospitals consider these choice architecture interventions to support the adoption of sustainable and healthy diets.

Infants' gaze exhibits a fractal structure that varies by age and stimulus salience.

Project description:The development of selective visual attention is critical for effectively engaging with an ever-changing world. Its optimal deployment depends upon interactions between neural, motor, and sensory systems across multiple timescales and neurocognitive loci. Previous work illustrates the spatio-temporal dynamics of these processes in adults, but less is known about this emergent phenomenon early in life. Using data (n = 190; 421 visits) collected between 3 and 35 months of age, we examined the spatio-temporal complexity of young children's gaze patterns as they viewed stimuli varying in semantic salience. Specifically, we used detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) to quantify the extent to which infants' gaze patterns exhibited scale invariant patterns of nested variability, an organizational feature thought to reflect self-organized and optimally flexible system dynamics that are not overly rigid or random. Results indicated that gaze patterns of even the youngest infants exhibited fractal organization that increased with age. Further, fractal organization was greater when children (a) viewed social stimuli compared to stimuli with degraded social information and (b) when they spontaneously gazed at faces. These findings suggest that selective attention is well-organized in infancy, particularly toward social information, and indicate noteworthy growth in these processes across the first years of life.

OSIEshort: A small stimulus set can reliably estimate individual differences in semantic salience.

Project description:Recent findings revealed consistent individual differences in fixation tendencies among observers free-viewing complex scenes. The present study aimed at (1) replicating these differences, and (2) testing whether they can be estimated using a shorter test. In total, 103 participants completed two eye-tracking sessions. The first session was a direct replication of the original study, but the second session used a smaller subset of images, optimized to capture individual differences efficiently. The first session replicated the large and consistent individual differences along five semantic dimensions observed in the original study. The second session showed that these differences can be estimated using about 40 to 100 images (depending on the tested dimension). Additional analyses revealed that only the first 2 seconds of viewing duration seem to be informative regarding these differences. Taken together, our findings suggest that reliable individual differences in semantic salience can be estimated with a test totaling less than 2 minutes of viewing duration.
