The genome sequence of the meadow field syrph, Eupeodes latifasciatus (Macquart, 1829).

ABSTRACT: We present a genome assembly from an individual female Eupeodes latifasciatus (meadow field syrph; Arthropoda; Insecta; Diptera; Syrphidae). The genome sequence is 846 megabases in span. The majority of the assembly (96.8%) is scaffolded into 4 chromosomal pseudomolecules with the X sex chromosome assembled. The complete mitochondrial genome was also assembled and is 18.5 kilobases in length. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl has identified 12,848 protein coding genes.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Dascyllus trimaculatus (Ruppell, 1829).

Project description:Damselfishes (family Pomacentridae) comprise approximately 400 species that play an important ecological role in temperate and coral reefs. Here, for the first time, we assemble and annotate the mitochondrial genome of Dascyllus trimaculatus, the three-spot dascyllus, a planktivorous damselfish that primarily recruits in anemones. The circular genome of D. trimaculatus is 16,967 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a control region. Gene arrangement and codon usage is similar to reported mitochondrial genomes of other damselfish genera, and a phylogenetic analysis of a set of damselfish representatives is consistent with known evolutionary analyses.

Characterization of the mitochondrial genome of Tinda javana (Macquart, 1838) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae: Pachygastrinae).

Project description:We have assembled and annotated the mitochondrial genome of Tinda javana (Macquart, 1838) (a species of soldier fly) in this study. It is 15,495 bp in length, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and a large non-coding control region (length: 704 bp). The nucleotide composition of whole mitochondrial genome biases toward A and T (75.5%). Most PCGs use ATN as initiation codon, except for cox1 which starts with CGA. All PCGs end with common termination codon TAA/G. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nucleotide sequence data supported the monophyly of Stratiomyidae and the sister relationship between Pachygastrinae and the clade (Nemotelinae + (Hermetiinae + Sarginae)).

Whole mitochondrial genome sequence of an Indian Plasmodium falciparum field isolate.

Project description:Mitochondrial genome sequence of malaria parasites has served as a potential marker for inferring evolutionary history of the Plasmodium genus. In Plasmodium falciparum, the mitochondrial genome sequences from around the globe have provided important evolutionary understanding, but no Indian sequence has yet been utilized. We have sequenced the whole mitochondrial genome of a single P. falciparum field isolate from India using novel primers and compared with the 3D7 reference sequence and 1 previously reported Indian sequence. While the 2 Indian sequences were highly divergent from each other, the presently sequenced isolate was highly similar to the reference 3D7 strain.

Genome of the hoverfly Eupeodes corollae provides insights into the evolution of predation and pollination in insects.

Project description:BackgroundHoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) including Eupeodes corollae are important insects worldwide that provide dual ecosystem services including pest control and pollination. The larvae are dominant predators of aphids and can be used as biological control agents, and the adults are efficient pollinators. The different feeding habits of larvae and adults make hoverflies a valuable genetic resource for understanding the mechanisms underlying the evolution and adaptation to predation and pollination in insects.ResultsHere, we present a 595-Mb high-quality reference genome of the hoverfly E. corollae, which is typical of an aphid predator and a pollinator. Comparative genomic analyses of E. corollae and Coccinellidae (ladybugs, aphid predators) shed light on takeout genes (3), which are involved in circadian rhythms and feeding behavior and might regulate the feeding behavior of E. corollae in a circadian manner. Genes for sugar symporter (12) and lipid transport (7) related to energy production in E. corollae had homologs in pollinator honeybees and were absent in predatory ladybugs. A number of classical cytochrome P450 detoxification genes, mainly CYP6 subfamily members, were greatly expanded in E. corollae. Notably, comparative genomic analyses of E. corollae and other aphidophagous hoverflies highlighted three homologous trypsins (Ecor12299, Ecor12301, Ecor2966). Transcriptome analysis showed that nine trypsins, including Ecor12299, Ecor12301, and Ecor2966, are strongly expressed at the larval stage, and 10 opsin genes, which are involved in visual perception, are significantly upregulated at the adult stage of E. corollae.ConclusionsThe high-quality genome assembly provided new insights into the genetic basis of predation and pollination by E. corollae and is a valuable resource for advancing studies on genetic adaptations and evolution of hoverflies and other natural enemies.
