Coastal and nearshore sediment data along the eastern coastal zone of Bangladesh of the northern Bay of Bengal.

ABSTRACT: A seafloor sediment dataset of 42 samples has been collected from the coastal and nearshore areas of the northern Bay of Bengal, which is situated in the southern part of the eastern coastal zone of Bangladesh. From February 2018 to March 2019, Van Veen grab samplers were employed to gather samples at a depth of 4 m and 23 m. The unconsolidated bottom surface has been sampled, taking bathymetry and fishing boat accessibility into account. Using the dry sieving technique, grain size distribution analysis was performed on the obtained sediments. The retrieved dataset was measured to identify seafloor sediment grain size distribution and determine the sediment dynamics. This data can be used to delineate sediment characteristics, depositional processes, and the environment.

Project description:Over the past decade, evidence of abrupt latitudinal changes in the dynamics, structure and genetic variability of intertidal and subtidal benthic communities along central-northern Chile has been found consistently at 30-32°S. Changes in the advective and thermal environment in nearshore waters have been inferred from ecological patterns, since analyses of in situ physical data have thus far been missing. Here we analyze a unique set of shoreline temperature data, gathered over 4-10 years at 15 sites between 28-35°S, and combine it with satellite-derived winds and sea surface temperatures to investigate the latitudinal transition in nearshore oceanographic conditions suggested by recent ecological studies. Our results show a marked transition in thermal conditions at 30-31°S, superimposed on a broad latitudinal trend, and small-scale structures associated with cape-and-bay topography. The seasonal cycle dominated temperature variability throughout the region, but its relative importance decreased abruptly south of 30-31°S, as variability at synoptic and intra-seasonal scales became more important. The response of shoreline temperatures to meridional wind stress also changed abruptly at the transition, leading to a sharp drop in the occurrence of low-temperature waters at northern sites, and a concurrent decrease in corticated algal biomass. Together, these results suggest a limitation of nitrate availability in nearshore waters north of the transition. The localized alongshore change results from the interaction of latitudinal trends (e.g., wind stress, surface warming, inertial period) with a major headland-bay system (Punta Lengua de Vaca at 30.25°S), which juxtaposes a southern stretch of coast characterized by upwelling with a northern stretch of coast characterized by warm surface waters and stratification. This transition likely generates a number of latitude-dependent controls on ecological processes in the nearshore that can explain species-specific effects, and add strength to the suggestion of an oceanography-driven, major spatial transition in coastal communities at 30-31°S.

Project description:Sharks and rays are at risk of extinction globally. This reflects low resilience to increasing fishing pressure, exacerbated by habitat loss, climate change, increasing value in a trade and inadequate information leading to limited conservation actions. Artisanal fisheries in the Bay of Bengal of Bangladesh contribute to the high levels of global fishing pressure on elasmobranchs. However, it is one of the most data-poor regions of the world, and the diversity, occurrence and conservation needs of elasmobranchs in this region have not been adequately assessed. This study evaluated elasmobranch diversity, species composition, catch and trade within the artisanal fisheries to address this critical knowledge gap. Findings show that elasmobranch diversity in Bangladesh has previously been underestimated. In this study, over 160000 individual elasmobranchs were recorded through landing site monitoring, comprising 88 species (30 sharks and 58 rays) within 20 families and 35 genera. Of these, 54 are globally threatened according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with ten species listed as Critically Endangered and 22 species listed as Endangered. Almost 98% juvenile catch (69-99% for different species) for large species sand a decline in numbers of large individuals were documented, indicating unsustainable fisheries. Several previously common species were rarely landed, indicating potential population declines. The catch pattern showed seasonality and, in some cases, gear specificity. Overall, Bangladesh was found to be a significant contributor to shark and ray catches and trade in the Bay of Bengal region. Effective monitoring was not observed at the landing sites or processing centres, despite 29 species of elasmobranchs being protected by law, many of which were frequently landed. On this basis, a series of recommendations were provided for improving the conservation status of the elasmobranchs in this region. These include the need for improved taxonomic research, enhanced monitoring of elasmobranch stocks, and the highest protection level for threatened taxa. Alongside political will, enhancing national capacity to manage and rebuild elasmobranch stocks, coordinated regional management measures are essential.

Project description:Halophilic microbes are studied to understand the metabolic pathways adopted by organisms in such extreme environment and for their biotechnological exploitation. In thallosohaline environments worldwide, the autotrophic alga Dunaliella salina Teodoresco is omnipresent, but it is being recently realised that the heterotrophic components vary in different regions. The unexplored eastern coastline of India abutted by Bay of Bengal was investigated for the heterotrophic halophilic microbes in this region. The waters in the salterns - replicas of natural hyper-saline water bodies of that region, were collected at four sites along 650 km of the coastal belt. In cultures set up from these waters, green and pink colonies were observed. The green colonies were found to be those of D. salina while the pink colonies were of heterotrophs. To identify the heterotrophic microbes, light microscopy, 16S rRNA typing and pigment profiling through spectrophotometry and HPLC were done. The cells in pink colonies were rod shaped. 16S rRNA typing of cells in these colonies detected the presence of Halomonas sp. - a eubacterium. The pigment profile of cells in pink cultures matched that of the archaea - Halobacterium; bacterioruberin derivatives were found. Thus, it was concluded that Halomonas and Halobacterium spp. are among the co-inhabitant heterotrophs of D. salina. Cultures of D. salina established from these salterns showed the typical three colours seen in the ponds of different sub-plots of salterns. They were green until 30 days, turning dark orange by 60 days and pink when 90 day old. In the 90 day old cultures, innumerable rod shaped cells were found. These cells were similar to the cells of the waters from the ponds of pink sub-plots of salterns and the pink colonies established from saltern waters in the laboratory. In the old (90 days) laboratory cultures of D. salina, the glycerol and proteins released from degenerating cells and the increase in salt concentration to super saturation levels due to evaporation of water in the medium led to the gregarious appearance of the heterotrophs - the co-inhabitants in natural environment.
