Characterization of four Escherichia albertii isolates collected from animals living in Antarctica and Patagonia.

Project description:Escherichia albertii is a recently discovered species with a limited number of well characterized strains. The aim of this study was to characterize four of the E. albertii strains, which were among 41 identified Escherichia strains isolated from the feces of living animals on James Ross Island, Antarctica, and Isla Magdalena, Patagonia. Sequencing of 16S rDNA, automated ribotyping, and rep-PCR were used to identify the four E. albertii isolates. Phylogenetic analyses based on multi-locus sequence typing showed these isolates to be genetically most similar to the members of E. albertii phylogroup G3. These isolates encoded several virulence factors including those, which are characteristic of E. albertii (cytolethal distending toxin and intimin) as well as bacteriocin determinants that typically have a very low prevalence in E. coli strains (D, E7). Moreover, E. albertii protein extracts caused cell cycle arrest in human cell line A375, probably because of cytolethal distending toxin activity.

Project description:We report the draft genome sequences of two unrelated cases of Escherichia coli sequence type 131 (ST131) possessing the carbapenemase gene blaIMP-4. The E. coli ST131 SN5 isolate also possessed blaSHV-12 and plasmid-mediated quinolone-resistance genes. Wider dissemination of blaIMP-4 may occur due to the blaIMP-4-carrying L/M or HI2 plasmids among E. coli ST131 isolates.

The isolates were obtained 1 month apart during the patient's hospitalization in Lebanon, in May (Marseille-Q1950) and June (Marseille-Q1951) 2019. The genome sizes of strains Marseille-Q1950 and Marseille-Q1951 were 5,181,515 bp and 5,213,451 bp, respectively.

Draft genome sequences of five recent human uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolates.

Project description:This study reports the release of draft genome sequences of five isolates of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), isolated from patients suffering from uncomplicated cystitis in 2012 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that these strains belonged to E. coli phylogroups B2 and D and are closely related to known UPEC strains. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that more conserved proteins were shared between these recent isolates and UPEC strains causing cystitis than those causing pyelonephritis. Additional genomic comparisons identified that three isolates encode a type III secretion system (T3SS) and a putative T3SS effector gene cluster along with an invasin-like outer membrane protein. The presence of T3SS genes is a rare occurrence among UPEC strains. These genomes further substantiate the heterogeneity of the gene pool of UPEC and provide a foundation for comparative genomic studies using recent clinical isolates.

The genomes of six extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli strains isolated from wounded military personnel were sequenced and annotated.
