Worth the Risk? Greater Acceptance of Instrumental Harm Befalling Men than Women.

ABSTRACT: Scientific and organizational interventions often involve trade-offs whereby they benefit some but entail costs to others (i.e., instrumental harm; IH). We hypothesized that the gender of the persons incurring those costs would influence intervention endorsement, such that people would more readily support interventions inflicting IH onto men than onto women. We also hypothesized that women would exhibit greater asymmetries in their acceptance of IH to men versus women. Three experimental studies (two pre-registered) tested these hypotheses. Studies 1 and 2 granted support for these predictions using a variety of interventions and contexts. Study 3 tested a possible boundary condition of these asymmetries using contexts in which women have traditionally been expected to sacrifice more than men: caring for infants, children, the elderly, and the ill. Even in these traditionally female contexts, participants still more readily accepted IH to men than women. Findings indicate people (especially women) are less willing to accept instrumental harm befalling women (vs. men). We discuss the theoretical and practical implications and limitations of our findings.

Project description:In the present research, we applied a goal-congruity perspective - the proposition that men and women seek out roles that afford their internalized values (Diekman et al., 2017) - to better understand the degree to which careers in healthcare, early education, and domestic roles (HEED; Croft et al., 2015) are devalued in society. Our first goal was to test the hypothesis that men, relative to women, are less interested in pursuing HEED careers in part because they are less likely than women to endorse communal values. A second, more novel goal was to extend goal congruity theory to examine whether gender differences in communal values also predict the belief that HEED careers add worth to society and are deserving of higher salaries. In three studies of undergraduate students (total N = 979), we tested the predictive role of communal values (i.e., a focus on caring for others), as distinct from agentic values (i.e., a focus on status, competition, and wealth; Bakan, 1966). Consistent with goal congruity theory, Studies 1 and 2 revealed that men's lower interest in adopting HEED careers, such as nursing and elementary education, was partially mediated by men's (compared to women's) lower communal values. Extending the theory, all three studies also documented a general tendency to see HEED as having relatively lower worth to society compared to STEM careers. As expected, communal values predicted perceiving higher societal worth in HEED careers, as well as supporting increases in HEED salaries. Thus, gender differences in communal values accounted for men's (compared to women's) tendency to perceive HEED careers as having less societal worth and less deserving of salary increases. In turn, gender differences in perceived societal worth of HEED itself predicted men's relatively lower interest in pursuing HEED careers. In no instance, did agentic values better explain the gender difference in HEED interest or perceived worth. These findings have important implications for how we understand the value that society places on occupations typically occupied by women versus men.

Project description:IntroductionAnhedonia has been recognized as a major risk factor for smoking persistence. Potential gender differences in the effect of anhedonia on smoking cessation have not been studied. Using data from a completed clinical trial of maintenance nicotine patch therapy, we hypothesized that gender would moderate the effect of anhedonia on short-term abstinence, such that anhedonic women would be less likely to achieve abstinence.MethodsParticipants (N = 525; 50% female, 48.2% Black/African American, average age: 46 years) received 21mg/day nicotine patch and four brief behavior counseling sessions over 8 weeks. Participants were classified at baseline using the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale as anhedonic (scores > 2) or hedonic (scores ≤ 2). Bioverified 7-day point prevalence abstinence was measured at week 8. Using logistic regression analysis, we tested the interaction of anhedonia by gender predicting abstinence, adjusting for age, race, nicotine dependence, and baseline depressive symptomatology.ResultsSeventy participants (13%) were classified as anhedonic. Men were more likely to be anhedonic than women (16.6% vs. 10.2%, p = .03). Contrary to our hypothesis, the interaction of anhedonic status (hedonic vs. anhedonic) by gender was nonsignificant (p = .18). There was a main effect of hedonic capacity, such that anhedonia predicted abstinence, odds ratio = 3.24, 95% confidence interval = 1.39-7.51, p = .006.ConclusionBoth male and female anhedonic smokers were more likely to be abstinent, which contrasts with prior research indicating that anhedonia is a risk factor for difficulty quitting. This unexpected finding may be explained by a possible selective benefit of nicotine patch therapy, which has been observed in some studies to have antidepressant effects.ImplicationsThis is the first study to examine whether the association between pretreatment anhedonia and smoking cessation differs by gender. For both women and men, anhedonia was associated with a greater likelihood of abstinence after 8 weeks of treatment with 21mg/day nicotine patch and behavior counseling. Our findings indicate that the association between anhedonia and smoking cessation is not as clear as has been assumed and may depend in part on the type of treatment delivered.

Project description:Women typically have less muscle mass and more fat mass than men, while at the same time possessing similar or even greater whole-body insulin sensitivity. Our study aimed to investigate the molecular factors in primarily adipose tissue, but also in skeletal muscle, contributing to this sex difference. In healthy, moderately active premenopausal women and men with normal weight (28 ± 5 and 23 ± 3 years old; BMI 22.2 ± 1.9 and 23.7 ± 1.7) and in healthy, recreationally active women and men with overweight (32.2 ± 6 and 31.0 ± 5 years old; BMI 29.8 ± 4.3 & 30.9 ± 3.7) matched at age, BMI, and fitness level, we assessed insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance with a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp or oral glucose tolerance test and studied subcutaneous adipose tissue and skeletal muscle samples with western blotting. Additionally, we traced glucose-stimulated glucose disposal in adipose tissues of female and male C57BL/6J littermate mice aged 16 weeks and measured glucose metabolic proteins. Our findings revealed greater protein expression related to glucose disposal in the subcutaneous adipose tissue (AKT2, insulin receptor, glucose transport 4) and skeletal muscle (hexokinase II, pyruvate dehydrogenase) in women compared to matched men with normal weight and with overweight. This increased protein capacity for glucose uptake extended to white adipose tissues of mice accompanied with ~2-fold greater glucose uptake compared to male mice. Furthermore, even in the obese state, women displayed better glucose tolerance than matched men, despite having 46% body fat and 20 kg less lean mass. In conclusion, our findings suggest that the superior potential for glucose disposal in female subcutaneous adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, driven by greater expression of various glucose metabolic proteins, compensates for their lower muscle mass. This likely explains women's superior glucose tolerance and tissue insulin sensitivity compared to men.
