Pharmacy student perceptions of remote learning and wellness during the pandemic: Lessons learned from a metropolitan commuter city.

ABSTRACT:

Introduction

The purpose of this study was to assess pharmacy student perceptions of remote learning experiences and personal well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic in a metropolitan commuter city.

Methods

A survey was developed and sent to pharmacy students from the three pharmacy colleges in New York City in January 2021. The survey domains consisted of demographics, personal well-being, classroom experiences, and pandemic and post-pandemic preferred learning modalities and reasons.

Results

From a total of 1354 students from professional years one, two, and three across the three colleges, completed responses were received from 268 students (20% response rate). More than half of the respondents (55.6%) reported a negative impact of the pandemic on their well-being. More than half of the respondents (58.6%) reported more time to study. When students were asked their preferred mode of pharmacy education delivery during the pandemic and post-pandemic, a quarter (24.5%) preferred remote learning for all courses during the pandemic, and only a quarter (26.8%) preferred traditional classrooms for all courses post-pandemic. Approximately 60% of the respondents preferred some type of remote learning post-pandemic.

Conclusions

Pharmacy student learning has been and continues to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for pharmacy students in New York City. This study sheds light on the remote learning experiences and preferences of pharmacy students in a commuter city. Future studies could assess pharmacy student learning experiences and preferences after return to campus.

Project description:BackgroundThe use of mobile apps in health care is growing. Current and future practitioners must be equipped with the skills to navigate and utilize apps in patient care, yet few strategies exist for training health care professional students on the usage of apps.ObjectiveTo characterize first-year pharmacy student use of medical apps, evaluate first-year pharmacy student's perception of skills in finding, evaluating, and using medical apps before and after a focused learning experience, and assess student satisfaction and areas for improvement regarding the learning experience.MethodsStudents listened to a recorded, Web-based lecture on finding, evaluating, and using mobile apps in patient care. A 2-hour, interactive workshop was conducted during which students were led by an instructor through a discussion on strategies for finding and using apps in health care. The students practiced evaluating 6 different health care-related apps. Surveys were conducted before and after the focused learning experience to assess students' perceptions of medical apps and current use and perspectives on satisfaction with the learning experience and role of technology in health care.ResultsThis educational intervention is the first described formal, interactive method to educate student pharmacists on medical apps. With a 99% response rate, surveys conducted before and after the learning experience displayed perceived improvement in student skills related to finding (52/119, 44% before vs 114/120, 95% after), evaluating (18/119, 15% before vs 112/120, 93% after), and using medical apps in patient care (31/119, 26% before vs 108/120, 90% after) and the health sciences classroom (38/119, 32% before vs 104/120, 87% after). Students described satisfaction with the educational experience and agreed that it should be repeated in subsequent years (89/120, 74% agreed or strongly agreed). Most students surveyed possessed portable electronic devices (107/119, 90% mobile phone) and agreed with the concept of medical apps being an important part of the health care profession in the future (112/119, 94% before and 115/120, 96% after).ConclusionsStudent pharmacists recognize the key role technology plays in the future of health care. A medical apps workshop was successful in improving student pharmacists' perceptions of ability to find, evaluate, and use medical apps.

Project description:Leadership training is a necessary component of undergraduate medical education. Our group successfully implemented a student-led organization starting from 2016 (Student Leadership Development Initiative; SLDI) that aimed to provide medical students with exposure to physician-leader career paths in an informal, organic, interactive setting. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift to online programming, and given the high prevalence of ZOOMTM fatigue, we incorporated monthly, freely available, self-directed modules as an additional leadership training opportunity. The goals of this study are to assess the (1) feasibility of and participation in a virtual student organization focused on leadership training, (2) whether students' perceptions of the importance of leadership were associated with participation in SLDI, and (3) lessons learned from transitioning to virtual modalities. An anonymous, retrospective cross-sectional survey with 13-items was distributed through an email listserv and a 6-question survey was sent to attendees following each virtual group-discussion. A Fisher's exact test was conducted to assess whether the number of modules completed was associated with students' perception of leadership importance. Survey results showed that 85% strongly agreed or agreed that SLDI helped them develop professional goals and career paths, and 74% reported benefits in becoming more compassionate physician leaders and valuing wellness. All respondents completed ≥1 self-directed module, and the students' perception of leadership importance did not influence the number of self-directed modules completed (p > .05). Most participants (63%) attended ≥67% of virtual events, and postevent feedback was positive; however, only 46% of respondents reported meeting someone new at events and 32% reported that they intended on connecting with new contacts. Our results suggest that virtual leadership student-organization, involving small-group discussions and self-directed modules, is feasible and beneficial for medical students. However, the inability to promote meaningful networking opportunities is a major limitation of a virtual training model.

Project description:Longitudinal clinical studies traditionally require in-person study visits which are well documented to pose barriers to participation and contribute challenges to enrolling representative samples. Remote trial models may reduce barriers to research engagement, improve retention, and reach a more representative cohort. As remote trials become more common following the COVID-19 pandemic, a critical evaluation of this approach is imperative to optimize this paradigm shift in research. The TestBoston study was launched to understand prevalence and risk factors for COVID-19 infection in the greater Boston area through a fully remote home-testing model. Participants (adults, within 45 miles of Boston, MA) were recruited remotely from patient registries at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the general public. Participants were provided with monthly and "on-demand" at-home SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR and antibody testing using nasal swab and dried blood spot self-collection kits and electronic surveys to assess symptoms and risk factors for COVID-19 via an online dashboard. Between October 2020 and January 2021, we enrolled 10,289 participants reflective of Massachusetts census data. Mean age was 47 years (range 18-93), 5855 (56.9%) were assigned female sex at birth, 7181(69.8%) reported being White non-Hispanic, 952 (9.3%) Hispanic/Latinx, 925 (9.0%) Black, 889 (8.6%) Asian, and 342 (3.3%) other and/or more than one race. Lower initial enrollment among Black and Hispanic/Latinx individuals required an adaptive approach to recruitment, leveraging connections to the medical system, coupled with community partnerships to ensure a representative cohort. Longitudinal retention was higher among participants who were White non-Hispanic, older, working remotely, and with lower socioeconomic vulnerability. Implementation highlighted key differences in remote trial models as participants independently navigate study milestones, requiring a dedicated participant support team and robust technology platforms, to reduce barriers to enrollment, promote retention, and ensure scientific rigor and data quality. Remote clinical trial models offer tremendous potential to engage representative cohorts, scale biomedical research, and promote accessibility by reducing barriers common in traditional trial design. Barriers and burdens within remote trials may be experienced disproportionately across demographic groups. To maximize engagement and retention, researchers should prioritize intensive participant support, investment in technologic infrastructure and an adaptive approach to maximize engagement and retention.

Project description:PurposeThe disruption of undergraduate medical education (UME) by the COVID-19 pandemic has sparked rapid, real-time adjustments by medical educators and students. While much is known about online teaching in general, little guidance is available to medical educators on how to adapt courses not originally designed for the online environment. To guide our faculty in this transition we conducted a needs assessment of students enrolled in virtual courses across all 4 years of UME training.MethodsUsing a mixed-methods approach, we conducted a single-institution virtual learning needs assessment in May and June of 2020. We developed and disseminated a survey to assess student experiences with virtual learning. We conducted quantitative and qualitative analysis of responses (n = 255 or 39%) to identify emergent themes.ResultsWe identified six interdependent themes that need to be met for medical students to fully reach their learning potential: access to stable internet and quiet study spaces, flexible course design with asynchronous, self-paced components, clear expectations for engagement with content and each other, a sense of connectedness with faculty and peers, synchronous classes that maximize interactivity, and assessments that foster a sense of learning over performance. Interpersonal relationships with faculty and peers affected students' sense of learning more than any other factor.ConclusionsBased on our findings we propose a hierarchy of needs for virtual learning that provides guidance on adapting existing medical school courses to the remote setting and overcoming common challenges. We highlight opportunities for how virtual elements may enrich in-person courses going forward, including in the clinical setting. Although the solutions required to meet the threshold of need at each level may differ based on the context, attending to these same fundamental needs can be extrapolated and applied to learners across a range of environments beyond the virtual.
