ABSTRACT:

Introduction

School educators are likely to explain the poor educational trajectories of students with Roma backgrounds related to the lack of parental support and interest in children's education. Aiming to understand further the patterns of Roma group's parental involvement in children's school life and their engagement experiences in school-related activities, the current research set an intervention supported by a culturally sensitive story-tool.

Method

Grounded in the intervention-based research framework, 12 participants (i.e., mothers) from different Portuguese Roma groups participated in this study. Data was collected through interviews conducted pre-and postintervention. Eight weekly sessions were delivered in the school context, using a story-tool and hands- on activities to generate culturally significant meanings regarding attitudes, beliefs, and values toward children's educational trajectories.

Results

Through the lens of acculturation theory, data analysis provided important findings under two overarching topics: patterns of parental involvement in children's school life and participants' engagement in the intervention program.

Discussion

Data show the distinct ways Roma parents participate in children's education and the relevance of mainstream contexts providing an atmosphere likely to build collaborative relationships with parents to overcome barriers to parental involvement.

Project description:BackgroundNeurological disorders are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan African, but resources for their management are scarce. Collaborations between training institutions in developed and resource-limited countries can be a successful model for supporting specialty medical education and increasing clinical and research capacity.Case reportThis report describes a US National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) to enhance expertise in neurology, developed between Makerere University College of Health Sciences in Kampala, Uganda, and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH, USA. This collaborative model is based on a successful medical education and research model that has been developed over the past two decades. The Ugandan and US teams have accumulated knowledge and 'lessons learned' that facilitate specialty expertise in neurological conditions, which are widespread and associated with substantial disability in resource-limited countries. Strengths of the model include a focus on community health care settings and a strong research component. Key elements include strong local leadership; use of remote technology, templates to standardize performance; shared exchanges; mechanisms to optimize sustainability and of dissemination activities that expand impact of the original initiative. Efficient collaborations are further enhanced by external and institutional support, and can be sequentially refined.ConclusionModels such as the Makerere University College of Health Sciences - Case Western Reserve University partnership may help other groups initiate collaborative education programmes and establish successful partnerships that may provide the opportunity to expand to other chronic diseases. A benefit of collaboration is that learning is two-directional, and interaction with other international medical education collaborators is likely to be of benefit to the larger global health community.

Project description:ObjectiveThe objective of this mixed methods review was to examine the effectiveness and family experiences of interventions promoting partnerships between families and the multidisciplinary health care team in pediatric and neonatal intensive care units.IntroductionHospitalization of infants and children in neonatal intensive care units and pediatric intensive care units has a significant effect on their families, including increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Available evidence syntheses focused on specific family-centered care, but not on partnership, which is another aspect that may improve families' outcomes and experiences.Inclusion criteriaThis review considered studies that focused on effectiveness or family experiences of interventions by health professionals in partnership with families of infants or children hospitalized in an intensive care unit. For the quantitative component of the review, the type of intervention was a partnership between the health care team and the family, and focused on outcomes of stress, anxiety, depression, quality of life, attachment, or satisfaction with family-centered care. For the qualitative component, the phenomenon of interest was family experiences of interventions that included collaboration and partnering with the health care team in the pediatric or neonatal intensive care unit. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies, published from 2000 to August 2022 in English or French, were eligible for inclusion.MethodsThe JBI methodology for convergent segregated mixed methods systematic reviews was followed using the standardized JBI critical appraisal and data extraction tools. Ten databases were searched in December 2019 and again in August 2022. Study selection, critical appraisal, and data extraction were performed by 2 reviewers independently. Findings of quantitative studies were statistically pooled through meta-analysis and those that could not be pooled were reported narratively. Qualitative studies were pooled through meta-synthesis.ResultsThis review included 6 qualitative and 42 quantitative studies. The methodological quality varied, and all studies were included regardless of methodological quality. Meta-analyses showed improvements in anxiety, satisfaction with family-centered care, and stress, yet no conclusive effects in attachment and depression. These results should be interpreted with caution due to high heterogeneity. Qualitative analysis resulted in 2 synthesized findings: "Interventions that incorporate partnerships between families and the health care team can improve the family's experience and capacity to care for the child" and "Having a child in intensive care can be an experience of significant impact for families." Integration of quantitative and qualitative evidence revealed some congruence between findings; however, the paucity of qualitative evidence minimized the depth of this integration.ConclusionsPartnership interventions can have a positive impact on parents of children in intensive care units, with improvements reported in stress, anxiety, and satisfaction with family-centered care.Review registrationPROSPERO CRD42019137834.Supplemental digital contentA Chinese-language version of the abstract of this review is available at http://links.lww.com/SRX/A50 . Project description:BackgroundIndustry and higher education sectors devote considerable, but independent resources to deliver postgraduate nursing education. This leads to duplication, uncertainty among students, and critical gaps in nursing education. Establishing and sustaining meaningful partnerships between invested university and industry stakeholders can strengthen workforce capability and improve patient care.MethodsTo evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of using a University-Industry Integration Framework to develop a postgraduate nursing education program. Prospective mixed methods cohort study (STROBE). A co-design approach, using an established University-Industry Integration Framework, leveraged expert stakeholder partnerships to contextualise knowledge and service need for developing a postgraduate education program for cancer care nurses.ResultsAll participants (n = 46) were 100% satisfied with the online resources, support, and communication processes applied. Qualitative data generated three major analytical interpretations (reciprocity, flexible adaptations, authentic learning), highlighting the experiences and connections and how the partnership evolved. Program participants (n = 15) undertook a six-week cancer education program with eight responding to the survey with overwhelming satisfaction (100%), increasing their knowledge and skills. While barriers were evident, three quarters (n = 6) indicated these were addressed and enabled progress in the program. However, 63% (n = 5) were not satisfied with the program workload.ConclusionsUniversity and industry partners can apply the University-Industry Integration Framework and deliver a successful postgraduate education program for cancer care services. Within a co-design partnership it is possible to develop strategies and processes to overcome barriers and deliver a program for mutual benefit. The culmination of this successful education program has enhanced collaborations between partners and likely will sustain the offering of future co-design endeavours.
