Status quo of the public's knowledge of probiotics based on video-sharing platforms.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Probiotics have been deemed multipotent and unprecedentedly applied in the health field recently. However, there are challenges in promoting credible and reliable resources while avoiding misinformation regarding probiotics for the public.

Methods

This study analysed 400 eligible probiotic-related videos selected from YouTube, and the three most popular video-sharing platforms (Bilibili, Weibo and TikTok) in China. Video retrieval was performed on September 5^th, 2022. GQS and tailored DISCERN tool assess each video's quality, usage, and reliability. A comparative analysis of videos from different sources was carried out.

Results

The identity distribution of probiotic video-producers was predominantly experts (n = 202, 50.50%), followed by amateurs (n = 161, 40.25%) and health-related institutions (n = 37, 9.25%). The videos' content category mainly discussed the function of probiotics (n = 120, 30%), the way to choose suitable products (n = 81, 20.25%), and the methods for taking probiotics (n = 71, 17.75%).The overall quality of videos was moderate (3/5 point) assessed by GQS, while the usage (1/6 point) and reliability (2/5 point) detailing probiotics assessed by tailored DISCERN tool were poor. The attitude of probiotic video-producers was primarily positive (n = 323, 80.75%), followed by neutral (n = 52, 13.00%) and negative (n = 25, 6.25%) (P < 0.001).

Conclusions

The current study showed that videos on social media platforms publicise important information including the concepts, usage, and precautions of probiotics to the public. But the overall quality of uploaded videos about probiotics was unsatisfactory. More efforts are needed to improve the higher-quality content of probiotic-related online videos and better propagate probiotic knowledge to the public in the future.

Project description:BackgroundShort videos have demonstrated huge potential in disseminating health information in recent years. However, to our knowledge, no study has examined information about colorectal polyps on short-video sharing platforms.ObjectiveThis study aimed to analyze the content and quality of colorectal polyps-related videos on short-video sharing platforms.MethodsThe terms "" (intestinal polyps) or "" (colonic polyps) or "" (rectal polyps) or "" (colorectal polyps) or "" (polyps of large intestine) were used to search in TikTok (ByteDance), WeChat (Tencent Holdings Limited), and Xiaohongshu (Xingyin Information Technology Limited) between May 26 and June 8, 2024, and then the top 100 videos for each search term on different platforms were included and recorded. The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) score, the Global Quality Scale (GQS), the modified DISCERN, and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT) were used to evaluate the content and quality of selected videos by 2 independent researchers. SPSS (version 22.0; IBM Corp) and GraphPad Prism (version 9.0; Dotmatics) were used for analyzing the data. Descriptive statistics were generated, and the differences between groups were compared. Spearman correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between quantitative variables.ResultsA total of 816 eligible videos were included for further analysis, which mainly conveyed disease-related knowledge (n=635, 77.8%). Most videos were uploaded by physicians (n=709, 86.9%). These videos had an average JAMA score of 2.0 (SD 0.6), GQS score of 2.5 (SD 0.8), modified DISCERN score of 2.5 (SD 0.8), understandability of 80.4% (SD 15.6%), and actionability of 42.2% (SD 36.1%). Videos uploaded by news agencies were of higher quality and received more likes and comments (all P<.05). The number of collections and shares of videos about posttreatment caveats were more than those for other content (P=.03 and P=.006). There was a positive correlation between the number of likes, comments, collections, and shares (all P<.001). The duration and the number of fans were positively correlated with the quality of videos (all P<.05).ConclusionsThere are numerous videos about colorectal polyps on short-video sharing platforms, but the reliability and quality of these videos are not good enough and need to be improved.

Project description:BackgroundDigital platforms offer a venue for patients and physicians to exchange health information and provide health care services outside traditional organizational contexts. Previous studies have seldom focused on the factors that drive the proactivity of physicians' online behavior. Additionally, there is limited research exploring the influence of patients on physicians' online behavior, particularly from the perspective of patients possessing power.ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the effect of patient-empowering behaviors on physicians' online knowledge sharing and uncover the potential mechanisms of proactivity. Based on the proactive motivational model and empowerment theory, we propose the existence of a reverse empowerment process, where empowerment flows from patients to physicians. We suggest that patient-empowering behaviors may drive physicians' online knowledge sharing as a form of proactivity. Specifically, 3 proactive motivational states-knowledge-sharing self-efficacy, sharing meaning, and positive professional affect-mediate this relationship. Additionally, platform extrinsic rewards, as a contextual factor, have a moderating effect.MethodsTo validate our proposed research model, we conducted a survey in China using the WJX platform, targeting physicians engaged in online knowledge sharing. The measurement instrument utilizes validated items adapted from prior research, using a 5-point Likert scale. We collected 257 valid responses, ensuring that participation was both anonymous and voluntary. Data analysis was performed in 2 stages. The first stage assessed the measurement model for reliability and validity, using the Harman 1-factor test and confirmatory factor analysis. The second stage used partial least squares-structural equation modeling to examine the direct, moderation, and mediation effects among the constructs, with bootstrapping used for significance testing. This comprehensive approach ensures a robust analysis of the proposed hypotheses and contributes to the overall validity of our research model.ResultsPerceived patient-empowering behaviors significantly and positively influence physicians' online knowledge sharing (β=0.27, P<.001). Knowledge-sharing self-efficacy (effect=0.06, P=.04), sharing meaning (effect=0.12, P<.001), and positive professional affect (effect=0.10, P=.003) each partially mediate the effect of patient-empowering behaviors on physicians' online knowledge sharing. The overall proactive motivational states play a complete mediation role, meaning the entire indirect effect of the model is significant (effect=0.29, P<.001), while the direct effect in the model is nonsignificant (effect=0.07, P=.26). Additionally, platform extrinsic rewards significantly and negatively moderate the effect of sharing meaning on physicians' online knowledge sharing (β=-0.13, P=.001).ConclusionsThis study is the first to recognize and examine proactivity as an alternative mediating mechanism for physicians' online knowledge sharing, highlighting the active role of patients in empowering physicians. It makes a significant contribution to the existing literature on empowerment, eHealth, and proactive behavior. Additionally, the findings offer valuable guidance for designing and managing digital platforms to ensure service sustainability.

Project description:Knowledge sharing between individuals is a key process for knowledge-intensive organizations to create value and gain a competitive edge. An individual is in the center of a complex set of factors, which are conducive to the knowledge-sharing process. The purpose of this empirical study is to explain the interaction mechanisms between personality and knowledge-sharing behavior and to examine the mediating effects of willingness to share knowledge and subjective norm. The theory of planned behavior, the social exchange theory, and the big five personality traits theory are combined to explain tacit knowledge-sharing behavior. A survey strategy and purposive sampling was applied, and the analysis was conducted on a sample of 288 employees from Croatia working on knowledge-intensive tasks for which high levels of tacit knowledge sharing are characteristic. A standard online questionnaire consisted of items evaluated on a 7-point Likert-scale, ranging from strongly agree (7) to strongly disagree (1). In the structural model, relationships between altruism, willingness, subjective norm, and tacit knowledge sharing were tested. Confirmatory factor analysis with maximum likelihood estimation was performed by using SEM software AMOS version 23. The findings of the study suggest that altruism has a direct impact on tacit knowledge sharing, reaffirming a relationship with knowledge sharing but distinguishing between sharing of different types of knowledge, assessing tacit knowledge sharing as a construct separate from general knowledge sharing. Our findings suggest that willingness to share is a predictive factor of knowledge sharing behavior between employees, having both direct impact on tacit knowledge sharing and being a mediator between the trait of altruism and tacit knowledge sharing. The mediation test also indicates that altruism has an indirect influence on tacit knowledge sharing when subjective norm was a mediator. The findings suggest that personality traits relying on social capital, such as altruism, have more influence on tacit knowledge sharing compared to personality traits that have accentuated intrinsic components. The study contributes to the better understanding of factors stimulating knowledge-sharing behaviors and provides recommendations based on empirical evidence, which may later be applied in the development of knowledge-sharing leadership styles, employee hiring, and auxiliary initiatives.
