The genome sequence of the pale mottled willow, Caradrina clavipalpis (Scopoli, 1763).

ABSTRACT: We present a genome assembly from an individual male Caradrina clavipalpis (pale mottled willow; Arthropoda; Insecta; Lepidoptera; Noctuidae). The genome sequence is 474 megabases in span. The entire assembly (100%) is scaffolded into 31 chromosomal pseudomolecules with the Z sex chromosome assembled. The complete mitochondrial genome was also assembled and is 15.6 kilobases in length.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Hypomecis punctinalis Scopoli, 1763 and its phylogenetic position within family Geometridae.

Project description:Hypomecis punctinalis Scopoli, 1763 belongs to the Lepidopteran family Geometridae. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of H. punctinalis. The mitogenome is 15,648 bp long and contains a typical set of genes (13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes) and a 484 bp AT-rich region. All PCGs start with ATN codons and stop at TAA codon except for cox1 using CGA as initiation codon and nad4 and nad5 using incomplete termination codon T. Within the mitogenome, 17 intergenic spacers and seven overlaps are founded. The intergenic nucleotides are 294 bp in total and two longest intervals locate between trnGln and nad2 as well as trnCys and trnTyr . The overlap nucleotides are 47 bp in total and the maximum overlap lies between cox2 and trnLys . The AT-rich region of the mitogenome contains an 'ATAGA + polyT' motif, three copies of 30-bp-repeat and a short polyA tail. The phylogenetic tree shows the relationships of four subfamilies of Geometridae are (((Ennominae + Geometrinae)+Larentiinae)+Sterrhinae)) and the relationships within subfamily Ennominae are ((((Erannis+Biston)+(Jankowskia+(Hypomecis+(Apocheima+Milionia))))+Ectropis)+Abraxas)+Phthonandria)+Celenna).

Complete mitochondrial genome of the Woodland Brown, Lopinga achine Scopoli, 1763 (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) and its phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the Woodland Brown, Lopinga achine Scopoli, 1763 (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) was determined to be 15,284 bp in size, including 37 typical mitochondrial genes and a control region. The gene content and arrangement of the mitogenome are identical to that of the majority of other sequenced nymphalids. All protein-coding genes (PCGs) are started with the conventional ATN codons, except for cox1 gene which is initiated by atypical CGA(R) codon. Nine PCGs use a typical stop codon of TAA, whereas the remaining PCGs (cox1, cox2, nad4, nad5) end with an incomplete T. The length of rrnL and rrnS are 1333 and 755 bp, respectively, separated by trnV. The phylogenetic tree inferred with Bayesian inference method reveals the phylogenetic relationships among the four tribes of Satyrinae analyzed as ((Satyrini + Melanitini) + (Elymniini + Amathusiini)). The newly sequenced species L. achine was clustered together with other two species of Parargina and formed a sister group with two species of the genus Lethe within Satyrini.

The quest for the identity of Orthoceratiumlacustre (Scopoli, 1763) reveals centuries of misidentifications (Diptera, Dolichopodidae).

Project description:Recently, a species of Orthoceratium was collected in Greece that differs morphologically from the European species commonly presumed to be Orthoceratiumlacustre (Scopoli, 1763). Verification of the identity of the Greek species through comparison with 460 specimens of Orthoceratium from 17 West Palaearctic and one Afrotropical country, and examination of existing type material, revealed that the species recognized as O.lacustre in northwestern Europe for over 250 years is actually O.sabulosum (Becker, 1907), the other known species in the genus, which was originally described from Tunisia. Although the types of O.lacustre have been lost, a comparison of the distribution ranges of both species in Europe provided evidence that the species collected in Greece is conspecific with O.lacustre. Both species have distinct distributions in the West Palaearctic, with O.lacustre largely restricted to the northern border of the Mediterranean basin, and O.sabulosum more widespread, occurring in northwestern Europe, the western, southern, and eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and the Afrotropical Region (Tanzania). Both species are redescribed and fully illustrated, a neotype is designated for O.lacustre and a lectotype for O.sabulosum, and a key to males and females is provided. The misidentifications that lasted for over two centuries are explained by the omission by previous authors to study the type specimens, and inaccuracies in species descriptions and keys.
