Impact of Policy Change on Access to Medication for Opioid Use Disorder in Primary Care

ABSTRACT: As the opioid overdose epidemic continues to escalate, increasing access to buprenorphine in primary care is crucial. In April 2021, the US Department of Health and Human Services removed the training requirement from the buprenorphine waiver process, allowing providers to apply for a waiver and prescribe buprenorphine without completing training. Through a cross-sectional survey, the authors investigated the impact of the policy change on primary care providers’ likelihood of applying for a waiver and the current attitudes, practices, and barriers to buprenorphine prescribing in primary care. Objectives The opioid overdose epidemic is escalating. Increasing access to medications for opioid use disorder in primary care is crucial.
