Fibrillogenesis and Hydrogel Formation from Fibrinogen Induced by Calcium Salts.

ABSTRACT: Fibrin is considered a highly promising biomaterial for manifold medical applications. Although it is a well-established material in this field, the required enzyme thrombin bears some striking downsides such as high costs and health risks. Current research discovers more and more ways to use fibrin's precursor fibrinogen as a substitute. Fibrinogen's full potential is, however, only retained when using it as fibrous gel, as it is the case for fibrin. In our previous work, we introduced such a kind of material for the first time. This material, called pseudo-fibrin, shows striking similarities to fibrin regarding its supramolecular structure and is created in a facile salt-induced process, which we further improved in this study. In particular, we shine light on the role of Ca2+
