Direct Imprinting of Large-Area Metallic Photonic Lattices for Infrared Polarization Filters with Broadband Tunability.

ABSTRACT: Metallic photonic lattices are promising in their application to plasmonic optical devices; however, scalable fabrication strategies are limited by sample size, response wavelength (mostly in the visible range), cost, and duration. This paper proposes a direct imprinting strategy to fabricate large-area metallic photonic lattices, which present a strong plasmonic response and broadband angle-resolved tuning properties in the infrared region. This simple fabrication strategy combines solution-synthesized Au nanoparticle colloid and imprinting technology, which does not require the use of photoresist or lithography. Thus, the feature size and response wavelength can exceed the limitations of the beam size and wave band, thereby offering the advantages of a low cost and high throughput.

Deterministic composite nanophotonic lattices in large area for broadband applications.

Project description:Exotic manipulation of the flow of photons in nanoengineered materials with an aperiodic distribution of nanostructures plays a key role in efficiency-enhanced broadband photonic and plasmonic technologies for spectrally tailorable integrated biosensing, nanostructured thin film solarcells, white light emitting diodes, novel plasmonic ensembles etc. Through a generic deterministic nanotechnological route here we show subwavelength-scale silicon (Si) nanostructures on nanoimprinted glass substrate in large area (4 cm2) with advanced functional features of aperiodic composite nanophotonic lattices. These nanophotonic aperiodic lattices have easily tailorable supercell tiles with well-defined and discrete lattice basis elements and they show rich Fourier spectra. The presented nanophotonic lattices are designed functionally akin to two-dimensional aperiodic composite lattices with unconventional flexibility- comprising periodic photonic crystals and/or in-plane photonic quasicrystals as pattern design subsystems. The fabricated composite lattice-structured Si nanostructures are comparatively analyzed with a range of nanophotonic structures with conventional lattice geometries of periodic, disordered random as well as in-plane quasicrystalline photonic lattices with comparable lattice parameters. As a proof of concept of compatibility with advanced bottom-up liquid phase crystallized (LPC) Si thin film fabrication, the experimental structural analysis is further extended to double-side-textured deterministic aperiodic lattice-structured 10 μm thick large area LPC Si film on nanoimprinted substrates.

Mid-infrared polarization-controlled broadband achromatic metadevice.

Project description:Metasurfaces provide a compact, flexible, and efficient platform to manipulate the electromagnetic waves. However, chromatic aberration imposes severe restrictions on their applications in broadband polarization control. Here, we propose a broadband achromatic methodology to implement polarization-controlled multifunctional metadevices in mid-wavelength infrared with birefringent meta-atoms. We demonstrate the generation of polarization-controlled and achromatically on-axis focused optical vortex beams with diffraction-limited focal spots and switchable topological charge (L∥ = 0 and L⊥ = 2). Besides, we further implement broadband achromatic polarization beamsplitter with high polarization isolation (extinction ratio up to 21). The adoption of all-silicon configuration not only facilitates the integration with CMOS technology but also endows the polarization multiplexing meta-atoms with broad phase dispersion coverage, ensuring the large size and high performance of the metadevices. Compared with the state-of-the-art chromatic aberration-restricted polarization-controlled metadevices, our work represents a substantial advance and a step toward practical applications.

Broadband Tunability of Polarization-Insensitive Absorber Based on Frequency Selective Surface.

Project description:An innovative tunable and polarization-insensitive 1.6-8 GHz frequency selective surface (FSS) absorber was investigated in this study. The proposed FSS, which is in 4-axial symmetrical form, includes a novel array of PIN diodes with biasing lines including inductors. A gradually reduced equivalent resistor of PIN diodes can be achieved with increasing DC voltage, which characterizes tunable, multi-resonance absorption peaks. Via this simplified design, small value resistor and equivalent capacitance of the gap between patterns can improve the absorber's performance in low frequencies; an active tunable absorber can be realized in a broad frequency range by employing adjustable devices. Changing the working state of the PIN diode allows the user to obtain strong absorption within the desired frequency. We analyzed the performance of the proposed absorber and found that it indeed shows very favorable absorption performance in low frequency (-10 dB in 1.6-4.3 GHz) and wideband (-8 dB in 4.3-5.4 GHz and -10 dB in 5.4-8.0 GHz) conditions. Calculation and simulation results also illustrated that the absorber is entirely polarization-insensitive.

Polarization-dependent photonic crystal fiber optical filters enabled by asymmetric metasurfaces.

Project description:We demonstrate in-fiber polarization-dependent optical filter by nanopatterning an asymmetric metallic metasurface array on the end-facet of polarization-maintaining photonic-crystal fibers. The asymmetric cross-typed nanoslit metasurface arrays are fabricated on the core of the optical fiber using the focused ion beam milling technique. Highly polarization- and wavelength-dependent transmission with transmission efficiency of ∼70% in the telecommunication wavelength was observed by launching two orthogonal linear-polarization states of light into the fiber. Full-wave electromagnetic simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results. These advanced meta-structured optical fibers can potentially be used as novel ultracompact in-fiber filters, splitters, and polarization converters.

Optical nano-woodpiles: large-area metallic photonic crystals and metamaterials.

Project description:Metallic woodpile photonic crystals and metamaterials operating across the visible spectrum are extremely difficult to construct over large areas, because of the intricate three-dimensional nanostructures and sub-50 nm features demanded. Previous routes use electron-beam lithography or direct laser writing but widespread application is restricted by their expense and low throughput. Scalable approaches including soft lithography, colloidal self-assembly, and interference holography, produce structures limited in feature size, material durability, or geometry. By multiply stacking gold nanowire flexible gratings, we demonstrate a scalable high-fidelity approach for fabricating flexible metallic woodpile photonic crystals, with features down to 10 nm produced in bulk and at low cost. Control of stacking sequence, asymmetry, and orientation elicits great control, with visible-wavelength band-gap reflections exceeding 60%, and with strong induced chirality. Such flexible and stretchable architectures can produce metamaterials with refractive index near zero, and are easily tuned across the IR and visible ranges.

Omnidirectional, broadband light absorption using large-area, ultrathin lossy metallic film coatings.

Project description:Resonant absorbers based on nanostructured materials are promising for variety of applications including optical filters, thermophotovoltaics, thermal emitters, and hot-electron collection. One of the significant challenges for such micro/nanoscale featured medium or surface, however, is costly lithographic processes for structural patterning which restricted from industrial production of complex designs. Here, we demonstrate lithography-free, broadband, polarization-independent optical absorbers based on a three-layer ultrathin film composed of subwavelength chromium (Cr) and oxide film coatings. We have measured almost perfect absorption as high as 99.5% across the entire visible regime and beyond (400-800 nm). In addition to near-ideal absorption, our absorbers exhibit omnidirectional independence for incidence angle over ±60 degrees. Broadband absorbers introduced in this study perform better than nanostructured plasmonic absorber counterparts in terms of bandwidth, polarization and angle independence. Improvements of such "blackbody" samples based on uniform thin-film coatings is attributed to extremely low quality factor of asymmetric highly-lossy Fabry-Perot cavities. Such broadband absorber designs are ultrathin compared to carbon nanotube based black materials, and does not require lithographic processes. This demonstration redirects the broadband super absorber design to extreme simplicity, higher performance and cost effective manufacturing convenience for practical industrial production.

Nano-plasmonic Bundt Optenna for broadband polarization-insensitive and enhanced infrared detection.

Project description:Infrared detection devices are becoming miniature with micro or nano-scale size. The advantages of downsizing come on the expense of insufficient collection of infrared radiation. Therefore, utilizing nano-plasmonic optical antennas becomes mandatory. However, it is desirable to develop antennas with broad bandwidth, polarization insensitivity, wide field-of-view, and reasonable plasmonic losses in order to collect most of incident infrared radiation and enhance power absorption efficiency. Here, an innovative optical antenna (optenna) is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. It has a novel shape of Bundt baking-pan. The gold Bundt is arranged in a periodic array that can be placed on top of a thin-film infrared absorbing layer. The developed optenna can squeeze infrared electric and magnetic fields to 50 nm-wide area in order to enhance material absorption efficiency. It demonstrates polarization insensitivity and ultra-broad bandwidth with a large fractional-bandwidth within the near, shortwave, and midwave infrared bands. It shows a remarkable enhanced power absorption efficiency up to 8 orders of magnitude with a reasonable average power loss of -3 dB and 80° field-of-view. It can be promising for future applications in solar-cells, telecommunication photodetectors, shortwave cameras, and midwave microbolometers.

Anderson localization in synthetic photonic lattices.

Project description:Synthetic photonic lattices provide unique capabilities to realize theoretical concepts emerging in different fields of wave physics via the utilization of powerful photonic technologies. Here we observe experimentally Anderson localization for optical pulses in time domain, using a photonic mesh lattice composed of coupled fiber loops. We introduce a random potential through programmed electro-optic pulse phase modulation, and identify the localization features associated with varying degree of disorder. Furthermore, we present a practical approach to control the band-gap width in photonic lattices by varying the coupling between the fiber loops, and reveal that the strongest degree of localization is limited and increases in lattices with wider band-gaps. Importantly, this opens a possibility to enhance or reduce the effect of disorder and associated localization of optical pulses.

Realization of all-band-flat photonic lattices.

Project description:Flatbands play an important role in correlated quantum matter and have promising applications in photonic lattices. Synthetic magnetic fields and destructive interference in lattices are traditionally used to obtain flatbands. However, such methods can only obtain a few flatbands with most bands remaining dispersive. Here we realize all-band-flat photonic lattices of an arbitrary size by precisely controlling the coupling strengths between lattice sites to mimic those in Fock-state lattices. This allows us to go beyond the perturbative regime of strain engineering and group all eigenmodes in flatbands, which simultaneously achieves high band flatness and large usable bandwidth. We map out the distribution of each flatband in the lattices and selectively excite the eigenmodes with different chiralities. Our method paves a way in controlling band structure and topology of photonic lattices.

Luminescent photonic crystals with multi-functionality and tunability.

Project description:The marriage of reflected light originating from photonic crystals (PCs) and emitted light would create miraculous phenomena. However, traditional luminophores cannot avoid the problem of aggregation-caused quenching. To solve this problem, we develop a general method to incorporate aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) into PCs via physical absorption or chemical reaction. The resulting luminescent PCs display diverse structural colors in response to water stimulation, due to the swelling of the aqueous medium. Such a water-tunable photonic band gap red-shift has the ability to modulate the AIEgen emission, as well as narrowing its full width at half maximum (FWHM), which allows the luminescent PC to behave as a smart intramolecular filter that is capable of creating arbitrary light from only one material. In addition, the filter is believed to modulate the broad emission spectra of AIEgens arising from different conformations. Furthermore, the luminescent PC can respond to ethanol stimulation due to two factors: (a) swelling of the aqueous medium (external tuning); and (b) expansion of nanoparticles (internal tuning). By exploiting the synergy of the external-internal tuning, the emission wavelength and intensity can be finely changed. Both the water- and ethanol-tunable emission shift fit to a linear relationship, and thus the luminescent PC could be able to quantitatively detect humidity in the environment and alcohol in wine.
