Evaluation of the Approach towards Vaccination against COVID-19 among the Polish Population-In Relation to Sociodemographic Factors and Physical and Mental Health.

ABSTRACT: Due to the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines, the world has faced a huge challenge with their general acceptance, including Poland. For this reason, we attempted to determine the sociodemographic factors influencing the decision of positive or negative attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination. The analysis included 200,000 Polish participants-80,831 women (40.4%) and 119,169 men (59.6%). The results revealed that the most common reasons for vaccine refusal and hesitancy were the fear of post-vaccination complications and their safety (11,913/31,338, 38.0%; 9966/31,338, 31.8%). Negative attitudes were observed more often among male respondents with primary or secondary education (OR = 2.01, CI95% [1.86-2.17] and OR = 1.52, CI95% [1.41-1.63], respectively). On the other hand, older age ≥ 65 (OR = 3.69; 95%CI [3.44-3.96]), higher education level (OR = 2.14; 95%CI [2.07-2.22]), living in big cities with a range of 200,000-499,999 inhabitants and more than 500,000 inhabitants (OR = 1.57, CI95% [1.50-1.64] and OR = 1.90, CI95% [1.83-1.98], respectively), good physical conditions (OR = 2.05; CI95% [1.82-2.31]), and at last normal mental health conditions (OR = 1.67, CI95% [1.51-1.85]) were significantly associated with COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Our study indicates which population group should be further supplied with data and information by health education, the government, and healthcare professionals to alleviate the negative attitude toward COVID-19 vaccines.

Project description:Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were immunized with plasmid DNA vaccine constructs encoding selected antigens from the parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. Two immobilization antigens (I-ags) and one cysteine protease were tested as genetic vaccine antigen candidates. Antigenicity was evaluated by immunostaining of transfected fish cells using I-ag specific mono- and polyclonal antibodies. I. multifiliis specific antibody production, regulation of immune-relevant genes and/or protection in terms of parasite burden or mortality was measured to evaluate the induced immune response in vaccinated fish. Apart from intramuscular injection, needle free injection and gene gun delivery were tested as alternative administration techniques. For the I-ags the complement protein fragment C3d and the termini of the viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus glyco(G)protein (VHSV G) were tested as opsonisation and cellular localisation mediators, respectively, while the full length viral G protein was tested as molecular adjuvant. Expression of I-ags in transfected fish cells was demonstrated for several constructs and by immunohistochemistry it was possible to detect expression of a secreted form of the Iag52B in the muscle cells of injected fish. Up-regulations of mRNA coding for IgM, MHC I, MHC II and TCR β, respectively, were observed in muscle tissue at the injection site in selected trials. In the spleen up-regulations were found for IFN-γ and IL-10. The highest up-regulations were seen following co-administration of I-ag and cysteine protease plasmid constructs. This correlated with a slight elevation of an I. multifiliis specific antibody response. However, in spite of detectable antigen expression and immune reactions, none of the tested vaccination strategies provided significant protection. This might suggest an insufficiency of DNA vaccination alone to trigger protective mechanisms against I. multifiliis or that other or additional parasite antigens are required for such a vaccine to be successful.

Project description:Fear of falling (FoF) is a disabling condition due to different factors. The present study assessed potential FoF predictors, among sociodemographic, physical, and mental health domains, and explored their structural patterns. This cross-sectional study is part of the Physical Activity Promotion & Domestic Accidents Prevention (PAP & DAP) project, and was targeted to a sample of 229 independent older people (M 14.0%, F 86.0%) aged over 60 (mean 70.5 ± 5.96), both normal and overweight (median BMI 25.8 kg/m2, Interquartile Range 5.24). Standardized tools were used to assess the variables: the Short Falls Efficacy Scale International for the FoF; an information questionnaire for the socio-demographic variables, the presence of diseases, and previous falls; the International Physical Activity Questionnaire for the PA level; the Senior Fitness Test for physical fitness data; the Short Form 12 questionnaire for variables in the mental domain; and the Psychological Well-Being Scale 24 for the psychological well-being. Correlation/regression analyses were used to explore relationships between FoF and the considered variables. A Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was conducted to show graphical patterns projected into space dimensions. A percentage of 59.0 of the sample showed moderate/high concern of falling. The multiple regression model showed the following variables being significant predictors (p < 0.05) of the FoF: BMI (coeff 0.44, SE 0.104), musculoskeletal disease (1.55, 0.681), upper body strength (0.33, 0.117), mobility and balance (0.76, 0.320), perceived physical health (- 0.21, 0.047), and self-acceptance (- 0.52, 0.190). MCA evidenced two dimensions: the first one explained 41.8% of the variance and was described mostly by FoF (square residuals 0.721), gender (0.670), leg strength (0.617), perceived mental health (0.591), musculoskeletal diseases (0.572), and PA level (0.556); the second dimension (12.3% of the variance), was characterized mainly by perceived physical health (0.350), life objectives (0.346), education (0.301), upper body strength (0.278), and living in family/alone (0.260). The pattern elicited by MCA was characterized by older subjects with moderate/high FoF having low education or no occupation, being overweight and inactive, suffering from different diseases, having low physical fitness, and declaring low perceived physical and mental health. These results suggest that interventions aimed at reducing FoF should be addressed to this specific profile of older people.

Project description:ObjectivesPrevailing job stress models encourage a multidimensional view of the psychosocial work environment and highlight the role that multiple co-occurring stressors play in the aetiology of mental health problems. In this study, we develop a latent typology of psychosocial work environment profiles to describe how a comprehensive array of job stressors are clustered in the Canadian labour market. We also examine the association between these latent psychosocial work environment profiles and several indicators of mental health.MethodsData were collected from 6408 workers who completed the Canadian National Psychosocial Work Environment Survey. Psychosocial work exposures were measured using standard items from the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire. We employed latent profile analyses to identify groups of individuals with similar psychosocial work environment profiles. We used log-linear regression models to examine the association between latent psychosocial work environment profiles and burnout, stress, and cognitive strain.ResultsFour distinct groups with highly divergent psychosocial work environment profiles were identified. Adjusting for a range of demographic and socioeconomic factors, latent psychosocial work environment profiles were strongly related to mental health. Individuals who reported exposure to a comprehensive array of psychosocial job stressors (11% prevalence) reported the highest probability of burnout (PR: 7.51, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.56-10.15), stress (PR: 8.98, 95% CI: 6.20-13.0), and cognitive strain (PR: 7.29, 95% CI: 5.02-10.60).ConclusionsFindings suggest that psychosocial work stressors are tightly clustered in the Canadian labour market, and that the clustering of work stressors is strongly associated with adverse mental health outcomes. Future scholarship may benefit from adopting a more comprehensive approach to the assessment of psychosocial job quality as a determinant of health and well-being.
