BAAD: A multipurpose dataset for automatic Bangla offensive speech recognition.

ABSTRACT: In spite of being the fifth most spoken native language in the world, Bangla has barely received any attention in the domain of audio and speech recognition. This article represents a speech dataset of Bengali Abusive Words with some non-abusive wors which are very close to the abusive ones. In this work, a multipurpose dataset is presented to recognize automatic slang speech for Bangla language, which was prepared by collection, annotation, and refinement of data. It consists of 114 slang words and 43 non-slang words with 6100 audio clips. For the collection of slang words, 60 native speakers and for non-abusive words, 23 native speakers participated who were, speaking in various dialects from over 20 districts of Bangladesh, and 10 university students participated to evaluate this dataset including annotation and refinements. Researchers can use this dataset to develop an automatic Bengali Slang speech recognition system, and also it can be used as a new benchmark for creating speech recognition-based machine learning models. This dataset can be enrich-ed further, and some background noise in the dataset can be used to simulate a more real-world scenario if desired. Otherwise, these noises could also be removed.

Project description:The speech emotion recognition system determines a speaker's emotional state by analyzing his/her speech audio signal. It is an essential at the same time a challenging task in human-computer interaction systems and is one of the most demanding areas of research using artificial intelligence and deep machine learning architectures. Despite being the world's seventh most widely spoken language, Bangla is still classified as one of the low-resource languages for speech emotion recognition tasks because of inadequate availability of data. There is an apparent lack of speech emotion recognition dataset to perform this type of research in Bangla language. This article presents a Bangla language-based emotional speech-audio recognition dataset to address this problem. BanglaSER is a Bangla language-based speech emotion recognition dataset. It consists of speech-audio data of 34 participating speakers from diverse age groups between 19 and 47 years, with a balanced 17 male and 17 female nonprofessional participating actors. This dataset contains 1467 Bangla speech-audio recordings of five rudimentary human emotional states, namely angry, happy, neutral, sad, and surprise. Three trials are conducted for each emotional state. Hence, the total number of recordings involves 3 statements × 3 repetitions × 4 emotional states (angry, happy, sad, and surprise) × 34 participating speakers = 1224 recordings + 3 statements × 3 repetitions × 1 emotional state (neutral) × 27 participating speakers = 243 recordings, resulting in a total number of recordings of 1467. BanglaSER dataset is created by recording speech-audios through smartphones, and laptops, having a balanced number of recordings in each category with evenly distributed participating male and female actors, and would serve as an essential training dataset for the Bangla speech emotion recognition model in terms of generalization. BanglaSER is compatible with various deep learning architectures such as Convolutional neural networks, Long short-term memory, Gated recurrent unit, Transformer, etc. The dataset is available at https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/t9h6p943xy/5 and can be used for research purposes.

Project description:Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) identifies and categorizes emotional states by analyzing speech signals. SER is an emerging research area using machine learning and deep learning techniques due to its socio-cultural and business importance. An appropriate dataset is an important resource for SER related studies in a particular language. There is an apparent lack of SER datasets in Bangla language although it is one of the most spoken languages in the world. There are a few Bangla SER datasets but those consist of only a few dialogs with a minimal number of actors making them unsuitable for real-world applications. Moreover, the existing datasets do not consider the intensity level of emotions. The intensity of a specific emotional expression, such as anger or sadness, plays a crucial role in social behavior. Therefore, a realistic Bangla speech dataset is developed in this study which is called KUET Bangla Emotional Speech (KBES) dataset. The dataset consists of 900 audio signals (i.e., speech dialogs) from 35 actors (20 females and 15 males) with diverse age ranges. Source of the speech dialogs are Bangla Telefilm, Drama, TV Series, Web Series. There are five emotional categories: Neutral, Happy, Sad, Angry, and Disgust. Except Neutral, samples of a particular emotion are divided into two intensity levels: Low and High. The significant issue of the dataset is that the speech dialogs are almost unique with relatively large number of actors; whereas, existing datasets (such as SUBESCO and BanglaSER) contain samples with repeatedly spoken of a few pre-defined dialogs by a few actors/research volunteers in the laboratory environment. Finally, the KBES dataset is exposed as a nine-class problem to classify emotions into nine categories: Neutral, Happy (Low), Happy (High), Sad (Low), Sad (High), Angry (Low), Angry (High), Disgust (Low) and Disgust (High). However, the dataset is kept symmetrical containing 100 samples for each of the nine classes; 100 samples are also gender balanced with 50 samples for male/female actors. The developed dataset seems a realistic dataset while compared with the existing SER datasets.

Project description:IntroductionTranscribing disordered speech can be useful when diagnosing motor speech disorders such as primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS), who have sound additions, deletions, and substitutions, or distortions and/or slow, segmented speech. Since transcribing speech can be a laborious process and requires an experienced listener, using automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems for diagnosis and treatment monitoring is appealing. This study evaluated the efficacy of a readily available ASR system (wav2vec 2.0) in transcribing speech of PPAOS patients to determine if the word error rate (WER) output by the ASR can differentiate between healthy speech and PPAOS and/or among its subtypes, whether WER correlates with AOS severity, and how the ASR's errors compare to those noted in manual transcriptions.MethodForty-five patients with PPAOS and 22 healthy controls were recorded repeating 13 words, 3 times each, which were transcribed manually and using wav2vec 2.0. The WER and phonetic and prosodic speech errors were compared between groups, and ASR results were compared against manual transcriptions.ResultsMean overall WER was 0.88 for patients and 0.33 for controls. WER significantly correlated with AOS severity and accurately distinguished between patients and controls but not between AOS subtypes. The phonetic and prosodic errors from the ASR transcriptions were also unable to distinguish between subtypes, whereas errors calculated from human transcriptions were. There was poor agreement in the number of phonetic and prosodic errors between the ASR and human transcriptions.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that ASR can be useful in differentiating healthy from disordered speech and evaluating PPAOS severity but does not distinguish PPAOS subtypes. ASR transcriptions showed weak agreement with human transcriptions; thus, ASR may be a useful tool for the transcription of speech in PPAOS, but the research questions posed must be carefully considered within the context of its limitations.Supplemental materialhttps://doi.org/10.23641/asha.26359417.

Project description:BackgroundSpeech sound disorders (SSDs) are common communication challenges in children, typically assessed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) using standardized tools. However, traditional evaluation methods are time-intensive and prone to variability, raising concerns about reliability.ObjectiveThis study aimed to compare the evaluation outcomes of SLPs and an automatic speech recognition (ASR) model using two standardized SSD assessments in South Korea, evaluating the ASR model's performance.MethodsA fine-tuned wav2vec 2.0 XLS-R model, pretrained on 436,000 hours of adult voice data spanning 128 languages, was used. The model was further trained on 93.6 minutes of children's voices with articulation errors to improve error detection. Participants included children referred to the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at a general hospital in Incheon, South Korea, from August 19, 2022, to June 14, 2023. Two standardized assessments-the Assessment of Phonology and Articulation for Children (APAC) and the Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonology (U-TAP)-were used, with ASR transcriptions compared to SLP transcriptions.ResultsThis study included 30 children aged 3-7 years who were suspected of having SSDs. The phoneme error rates for the APAC and U-TAP were 8.42% (457/5430) and 8.91% (402/4514), respectively, indicating discrepancies between the ASR model and SLP transcriptions across all phonemes. Consonant error rates were 10.58% (327/3090) and 11.86% (331/2790) for the APAC and U-TAP, respectively. On average, there were 2.60 (SD 1.54) and 3.07 (SD 1.39) discrepancies per child for correctly produced phonemes, and 7.87 (SD 3.66) and 7.57 (SD 4.85) discrepancies per child for incorrectly produced phonemes, based on the APAC and U-TAP, respectively. The correlation between SLPs and the ASR model in terms of the percentage of consonants correct was excellent, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.984 (95% CI 0.953-0.994) and 0.978 (95% CI 0.941-0.990) for the APAC and UTAP, respectively. The z scores between SLPs and ASR showed more pronounced differences with the APAC than the U-TAP, with 8 individuals showing discrepancies in the APAC compared to 2 in the U-TAP.ConclusionsThe results demonstrate the potential of the ASR model in assessing children with SSDs. However, its performance varied based on phoneme or word characteristics, highlighting areas for refinement. Future research should include more diverse speech samples, clinical settings, and speech data to strengthen the model's refinement and ensure broader clinical applicability.
