ABSTRACT: The data in this article includes a variety of analysis, including swelling, viscosity and FT-IR to better understand the thermal-mechanical, viscoelastic and swelling properties of sacran, CNF, and Ag nanoparticles individually and collectively. The fabrication method of Sacran, CNF, and Sac/CNF-Ag composite films is also demonstrated in this data item and are related to the research article "Facile design of antibacterial sheets of sacran and nanocellulose". This data article summarizes all the information so that it is evident how silver nanoparticle-polysaccharide hydrogels might be employed as an on-demand dressings due to their proven ability to reduce bacterial viability.

Facile Synthesis and Characterization of Palm CNF-ZnO Nanocomposites with Antibacterial and Reinforcing Properties.

Project description:Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) isolated from plant biomass have attracted considerable interests in polymer engineering. The limitations associated with CNF-based nanocomposites are often linked to the time-consuming preparation methods and lack of desired surface functionalities. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of preparing a multifunctional CNF-zinc oxide (CNF-ZnO) nanocomposite with dual antibacterial and reinforcing properties via a facile and efficient ultrasound route. We characterized and examined the antibacterial and mechanical reinforcement performances of our ultrasonically induced nanocomposite. Based on our electron microscopy analyses, the ZnO deposited onto the nanofibrous network had a flake-like morphology with particle sizes ranging between 21 to 34 nm. pH levels between 8-10 led to the formation of ultrafine ZnO particles with a uniform size distribution. The resultant CNF-ZnO composite showed improved thermal stability compared to pure CNF. The composite showed potent inhibitory activities against Gram-positive (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) and Gram-negative Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) bacteria. A CNF-ZnO-reinforced natural rubber (NR/CNF-ZnO) composite film, which was produced via latex mixing and casting methods, exhibited up to 42% improvement in tensile strength compared with the neat NR. The findings of this study suggest that ultrasonically-synthesized palm CNF-ZnO nanocomposites could find potential applications in the biomedical field and in the development of high strength rubber composites.

Antibacterial and Photocatalytic Activity of ZnO/Au and ZnO/Ag Nanocomposites.

Project description:The use of a combination of nanoparticles as antimicrobial agents can be one strategy to overcome the tendency of microbes to become resistant to antibiotic action. Also, the optimization of nano-photocatalysts to efficiently remove persistent pollutants from wastewater is a hot topic. In this study, two composites ZnO/Au (1% wt.) and ZnO/Ag (1% wt.) were synthesized by simple aqueous solution methods. The structure and morphology of the r nanocomposites were analyzed by structural and optical characterization methods. The formation of AuNPs and AgNPs in these experiments was also discussed. The antimicrobial properties of ZnO, ZnO/Au, and ZnO/Ag nanomaterials were investigated against Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). The results showed an increase of 80% in the antimicrobial activity of ZnO/Au against Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared with 30% in the case of ZnO/Ag. Similarly, in the case of the S. aureus strain tests, ZnO/Au increased the antimicrobial activity by 55% and ZnO/Ag by 33%. The photocatalytic tests indicated an improvement in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV irradiation using ZnO/Au and ZnO/Ag nanocomposites compared to bare ZnO. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of ZnO after 60 min of UV irradiation was ∼83%, while the addition of AuNPs enhanced the degradation rate to ∼95% (ZP2), and AgNP presence enhanced the efficiency to ∼98%. The introduction of noble metallic nanoparticles into the ZnO matrix proved to be an effective strategy to increase their antimicrobial activity against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated through the degradation of MB dye. Comparing the enhancing effects of Au and Ag, it was found that ZnO/Au was a better antimicrobial agent while ZnO/Ag was a more effective photocatalyst under UV irradiation.

Microwave-Hydrothermal Rapid Synthesis of Cellulose/Ag Nanocomposites and Their Antibacterial Activity.

Project description:Silver-based antimicrobial nanomaterials are considered as the most promising antibacterial agents owing to their outstanding antimicrobial efficacy and their relatively low toxicity to human beings. In this work, we report on a facile and environment-friendly microwave-hydrothermal method to prepare cellulose/Ag nanocomposites using hemicellulose as the reductant. The influences of the microwave-hydrothermal heating time and temperature, as well as the hemicellulose concentration on the formation of cellulose nanocomposites, were investigated in detail. Experimental results indicated that the hemicellulose was an effective reductant for silver ions, with higher temperature and longer heating time favoring the formation of silver with higher crystallinity and mass content in the nanocomposites. Moreover, the antimicrobial properties of the as-prepared cellulose/Ag nanocomposites were explored using Gram-positive S. aureus ATCC 6538 and Gram-negative E. coli HB 101 by both disc diffusion method and agar dilution method, and the nanocomposites showed excellent antibacterial activity. These results demonstrate that the as-prepared cellulose/Ag nanocomposites, as a kind of antibacterial material, are promising for applications in a wide range of biomedical fields.

Silk Fiber as the Support and Reductant for the Facile Synthesis of Ag-Fe₃O₄ Nanocomposites and Its Antibacterial Properties.

Project description:We report a facile and environmentally friendly approach to prepare Ag-Fe₃O₄-silk fiber nanocomposites. The Ag-Fe₃O₄-silk fiber acts as: (i) a biocompatible support for the silver nanoparticles; and (ii) a reducing agent for the silver ions. Neither additional reducing agents nor toxic organic solvents were used during the preparation process. The Ag-Fe₃O₄-silk fiber nanocomposites can be actuated by a small household magnet and have high antibacterial activities against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. These nanocomposites could be easily recycled without a decrease in their antibacterial activities due to the synergistic effects between the Ag NPs and Fe₃O₄ NPs with large amounts of active sites.

Antimicrobial Properties and Cytocompatibility of PLGA/Ag Nanocomposites.

Project description:The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial properties of multifunctional nanocomposites based on poly(dl-Lactide-co-Glycolide) (PLGA) and increasing concentration of silver (Ag) nanoparticles and their effects on cell viability for biomedical applications. PLGA nanocomposite films, produced by solvent casting with 1 wt%, 3 wt% and 7 wt% of Ag nanoparticles were investigated and surface properties were characterized by atomic force microscopy and contact angle measurements. Antibacterial tests were performed using an Escherichia coli RB and Staphylococcus aureus 8325-4 strains. The cell viability and morphology were performed with a murine fibroblast cell line (L929) and a human osteosarcoma cell line (SAOS-2) by cell viability assay and electron microscopy observations. Matrix protein secretion and deposition were also quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results suggest that the PLGA film morphology can be modified introducing a small percentage of silver nanoparticles, which induce the onset of porous round-like microstructures and also affect the wettability. The PLGA/Ag films having silver nanoparticles of more than 3 wt% showed antibacterial effects against E. coli and S. aureus. Furthermore, silver-containing PLGA films displayed also a good cytocompatibility when assayed with L929 and SAOS-2 cells; indicating the PLGA/3Ag nanocomposite film as a promising candidate for tissue engineering applications.

Synthesis and Antibacterial Properties of Novel ZnMn2O4-Chitosan Nanocomposites.

Project description:The development of productive antibacterial agents from nontoxic materials via a simple methodology has been an immense research contribution in the medicinal chemistry field. Herein, a sol-gel one-pot reaction was used to synthesize hybrid composites of hausmannite-chitosan (Mn3O4-CS) and its innovative derivative zinc manganese oxide-chitosan (ZnMn2O4-CS). Fixed amounts of CS with different metal matrix w/v ratios of 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% for Mn and Zn precursors were used to synthesize ZnMn2O4-CS hybrid composites. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the formation of polycrystalline tetragonal-structured ZnMn2O4 with a CS matrix in the hybrids. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis confirmed the formation of ZnMn2O4-CS hybrids. Detailed investigations of the surface modifications were conducted using scanning electron microscopy; micrographs at different magnifications revealed that the composites' surface changed depending on the ratio of the source materials used to synthesize the ZnMn2O4-CS hybrids. The antibacterial activity of the Mn3O4-CS and ZnMn2O4-CS composites was tested against various bacterial species, including Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The zone of inhibition and minimum inhibitory concentration values were deduced to demonstrate the efficacy of the ZnMn2O4-CS nanocomposites as antibacterial agents.

Strong Reinforcement Effects in 2D Cellulose Nanofibril-Graphene Oxide (CNF-GO) Nanocomposites due to GO-Induced CNF Ordering.

Project description:Nanocomposites from native cellulose with low 2D nanoplatelet content are of interest as sustainable materials combining functional and structural performance. Cellulose nanofibril-graphene oxide (CNF-GO) nanocomposite films are prepared by a physical mixing-drying method, with focus on low GO content, the use of very large GO platelets (2-45μm) and nanostructural characterization using synchrotron x-ray source for WAXS and SAXS. These nanocomposites can be used as transparent coatings, strong films or membranes, as gas barriers or in laminated form. CNF nanofibrils with random in-plane orientation, form a continuous non-porous matrix with GO platelets oriented in-plane. GO reinforcement mechanisms in CNF are investigated, and relationships between nanostructure and suspension rheology, mechanical properties, optical transmittance and oxygen barrier properties are investigated as a function of GO content. A much higher modulus reinforcement efficency is observed than in previous polymer-GO studies. The absolute values for modulus and ultimate strength are as high as 17 GPa and 250 MPa at a GO content as small as 0.07 vol%. The remarkable reinforcement efficiency is due to improved organization of the CNF matrix; and this GO-induced mechanism is of general interest for nanostructural tailoring of CNF-2D nanoplatelet composites.

Silica Shell Thickness-Dependent Fluorescence Properties of SiO2@Ag@SiO2@QDs Nanocomposites

Project description:Silica shell coatings, which constitute important technology for nanoparticle (NP) developments, are utilized in many applications. The silica shell’s thickness greatly affects distance-dependent optical properties, such as metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) and fluorescence quenching in plasmonic nanocomposites. However, the precise control of silica-shell thicknesses has been mainly conducted on single metal NPs, and rarely on complex nanocomposites. In this study, silica shell-coated Ag nanoparticle-assembled silica nanoparticles (SiO2@Ag@SiO2), with finely controlled silica shell thicknesses (4 nm to 38 nm), were prepared, and quantum dots (QDs) were introduced onto SiO2@Ag@SiO2. The dominant effect between plasmonic quenching and MEF was defined depending on the thickness of the silica shell between Ag and QDs. When the distance between Ag NPs to QDs was less than ~10 nm, SiO2@Ag@SiO2@QDs showed weaker fluorescence intensities than SiO2@QD (without metal) due to the quenching effect. On the other hand, when the distance between Ag NPs to QDs was from 10 nm to 14 nm, the fluorescence intensity of SiO2@Ag@SiO2@QD was stronger than SiO2@QDs due to MEF. The results provide background knowledge for controlling the thickness of silica shells in metal-containing nanocomposites and facilitate the development of potential applications utilizing the optimal plasmonic phenomenon.

Antibacterial performance of Ag nanoparticles and AgGO nanocomposites prepared via rapid microwave-assisted synthesis method.

Project description:Silver nanoparticles and silver-graphene oxide nanocomposites were fabricated using a rapid and green microwave irradiation synthesis method. Silver nanoparticles with narrow size distribution were formed under microwave irradiation for both samples. The silver nanoparticles were distributed randomly on the surface of graphene oxide. The Fourier transform infrared and thermogravimetry analysis results showed that the graphene oxide for the AgNP-graphene oxide (AgGO) sample was partially reduced during the in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Both silver nanoparticles and AgGO nanocomposites exhibited stronger antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli) than against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphyloccocus aureus and Staphyloccocus epidermidis). The AgGO nanocomposites consisting of approximately 40 wt.% silver can achieve antibacterial performance comparable to that of neat silver nanoparticles.

γ-Irradiated Chitosan Mediates Enhanced Synthesis and Antimicrobial Properties of Chitosan-Silver (Ag) Nanocomposites.

Project description:Chitosan (CSN) and its derivatives are being exploited for their potential role in agriculture in mitigating environmental stress factors. The present study was aimed to enhance the synthesis of chitosan (CSN)-based silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using γ-irradiated chitosan (IR-CSN) and to study the antimicrobial activity of IR-CSN-Ag NPs. The chitosan-silver nanocomposites (CSN-Ag NPs) were prepared by employing the green synthesis method using normal chitosan (high molecular weight (MW), NL-CSN) and oligochitosans (low MW, IR-CSN). The latter was derived by irradiation with γ rays (60Co) at 100 kGy dose to obtain a lower MW (approximately 25 kDa). NL-CSN and IR-CSN (0.0-2.5% w/v) were amalgamated with different concentrations of silver nitrate (0.0-2.5% w/v) and vice versa. The UV-visible spectra displayed a single peak in the range of 419-423 nm, which is the characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for Ag NPs. The physicochemical properties were assessed using different methods such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), zetasizer, elemental (CHNS) analysis, etc. The degree of Ag NP synthesis was more in IR-CSN than NL-CSN. The in vitro disc diffusion assay with IR-CSN-Ag NPs exhibited a significantly higher antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Further evaluation of the antifungal activity of IR-CSN and Ag NPs showed a synergistic effect against chickpea wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris). The study has provided a novel approach for the improved synthesis of CSN-Ag nanoparticle composites using γ-irradiated chitosan. This study also opens up new options for the development and deployment of γ-irradiated chitosan-silver nanocomposites for the control of phytopathogens in sustainable agriculture.
