Mechanical Model for Super-Anisotropic Swelling of the Multi-Cylindrical PDGI/PAAm Gels.

ABSTRACT: MC-PDGI/PAAm gels are cylindrical composite gels containing poly(dodecyl glyceryl itaconate) (PDGI) as a polymerized lipid oriented in a multilayer tubular shape within a polyacrylamide (PAAm) network. The most unique feature of the MC-PDGI/PAAm gel is its super-anisotropic swelling, wherein the diameter of the gel increases, but the length decreases with an increase in the volume of the gel. Through swelling and small-angle X-ray diffraction experiments, we investigated the effects of PDGI lipid bilayers and polymer network on the swelling of the MC-PDGI/PAAm gel, which suggests that the swelling anisotropy of the MC-PDGI/PAAm gel is dominated by the elasticity of the PDGI bilayers. Furthermore, we investigated the equation of state of the gel that roughly reproduced the experimental swelling results. These findings are crucial for realizing the controlled super-anisotropic swelling of MC-PDGI/PAAm gels and their applications as anisotropic actuation devices.

Swelling of Homogeneous Alginate Gels with Multi-Stimuli Sensitivity.

Project description:A new two-step method is suggested for the preparation of homogeneous alginate gels. In the first step, alginate chains are weakly bonded by Ca2+ ions in an aqueous solution with a low pH. In the next step, the gel is immersed into a strong solution of CaCl2 to finalize the cross-linking process. Homogeneous alginate gels preserve their integrity in aqueous solutions with a pH ranging from 2 to 7 and ionic strength in the interval from 0 to 0.2 M, at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 50 °C, and can be used in biomedical applications. The immersion of these gels into aqueous solutions with low pH induces the partial breakage of ionic bonds between chains (treated as gel degradation). This degradation affects the equilibrium and transient swelling of homogeneous alginate gels and makes them sensitive to the history of loading and environmental conditions (pH, ionic strength and temperature of aqueous solutions). As sensitivity to the environmental stimuli is a characteristic feature of polymer networks connected by catch bonds, homogeneous alginate gels may serve as a simple model, mimicking the behavior of more sophisticated structures in living matter.

Swelling of Thermo-Responsive Gels in Aqueous Solutions of Salts: A Predictive Model.

Project description:The equilibrium degree of swelling of thermo-responsive (TR) gels is strongly affected by the presence of ions in an aqueous solution. This phenomenon plays an important role in (i) the synthesis of multi-stimuli-responsive gels for soft robotics, where extraordinary strength and toughness are reached by soaking of a gel in solutions of multivalent ions, and (ii) the preparation of hybrid gels with interpenetrating networks formed by covalently cross-linked synthetic chains and ionically cross-linked biopolymer chains. A model is developed for equilibrium swelling of a TR gel in aqueous solutions of salts at various temperatures T below and above the critical temperature at which collapse of the gel occurs. An advantage of the model is that it involves a a small (compared with conventional relations) number of material constants and allows the critical temperature to be determined explicitly. Its ability (i) to describe equilibrium swelling diagrams on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gels in aqueous solutions of mono- and multivalent salts and (ii) to predict the influence of volume fraction of salt on the critical temperature is confirmed by comparison of observations with results of numerical simulation.

Equilibrium Swelling of Biocompatible Thermo-Responsive Copolymer Gels.

Project description:Biomedical applications of thermo-responsive (TR) hydrogels require these materials to be biocompatible, non-cytotoxic, and non-immunogenic. Due to serious concerns regarding potential toxicity of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm), design of alternative homo- and copolymer gels with controllable swelling properties has recently become a hot topic. This study focuses on equilibrium swelling of five potential candidates to replace PNIPAm in biomedical and biotechnological applications: poly(N-vinylcaprolactam), poly(vinyl methyl ether), poly(N,N-dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate), and two families of poly(2-oxazoline)s, and poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylates). To evaluate their water uptake properties and to compare them with those of substituted acrylamide gels, a unified model is developed for equilibrium swelling of TR copolymer gels with various types of swelling diagrams. Depending on the strength of hydrophobic interactions (high, intermediate, and low), the (co)polymers under consideration are split into three groups that reveal different responses at and above the volume phase transition temperature.

Model of Anisotropic Reverse Cardiac Growth in Mechanical Dyssynchrony.

Project description:Based on recent single-cell experiments showing that longitudinal myocyte stretch produces both parallel and serial addition of sarcomeres, we developed an anisotropic growth constitutive model with elastic myofiber stretch as the growth stimuli to simulate long-term changes in biventricular geometry associated with alterations in cardiac electromechanics. The constitutive model is developed based on the volumetric growth framework. In the model, local growth evolutions of the myocyte's longitudinal and transverse directions are driven by the deviations of maximum elastic myofiber stretch over a cardiac cycle from its corresponding local homeostatic set point, but with different sensitivities. Local homeostatic set point is determined from a simulation with normal activation pattern. The growth constitutive model is coupled to an electromechanics model and calibrated based on both global and local ventricular geometrical changes associated with chronic left ventricular free wall pacing found in previous animal experiments. We show that the coupled electromechanics-growth model can quantitatively reproduce the following: (1) Thinning and thickening of the ventricular wall respectively at early and late activated regions and (2) Global left ventricular dilation as measured in experiments. These findings reinforce the role of elastic myofiber stretch as a growth stimulant at both cellular level and tissue-level.

Swelling of Collagen-Hyaluronic Acid Co-Gels: An In Vitro Residual Stress Model.

Project description:Tissue-equivalents (TEs), simple model tissues with tunable properties, have been used to explore many features of biological soft tissues. Absent in most formulations however, is the residual stress that arises due to interactions among components with different unloaded levels of stress, which has an important functional role in many biological tissues. To create a pre-stressed model system, co-gels were fabricated from a combination of hyaluronic acid (HA) and reconstituted Type-I collagen (Col). When placed in solutions of varying osmolarity, HA-Col co-gels swell as the HA imbibes water, which in turn stretches (and stresses) the collagen network. In this way, co-gels with residual stress (i.e., collagen fibers in tension and HA in compression) were fabricated. When the three gel types tested here were immersed in hypotonic solutions, pure HA gels swelled the most, followed by HA-Col co-gels; no swelling was observed in pure collagen gels. The greatest swelling rates and swelling ratios occurred in the lowest salt concentration solutions. Tension on the collagen component of HA-Col co-gels was calculated from a stress balance and increased nonlinearly as swelling increased. The swelling experiment results were in good agreement with the stress predicted by a fibril network + non-fibrillar interstitial matrix computational model.

Capillary Assembly of Anisotropic Particles at Cylindrical Fluid-Fluid Interfaces.

Project description:The unique behavior of colloids at liquid interfaces provides exciting opportunities for engineering the assembly of colloidal particles into functional materials. The deformable nature of fluid-fluid interfaces means that we can use the interfacial curvature, in addition to particle properties, to direct self-assembly. To this end, we use a finite element method (Surface Evolver) to study the self-assembly of rod-shaped particles adsorbed at a simple curved fluid-fluid interface formed by a sessile liquid drop with cylindrical geometry. Specifically, we study the self-assembly of single and multiple rods as a function of drop curvature and particle properties such as shape (ellipsoid, cylinder, and spherocylinder), contact angle, aspect ratio, and chemical heterogeneity (homogeneous and triblock patchy). We find that the curved interface allows us to effectively control the orientation of the rods, allowing us to achieve parallel, perpendicular, or novel obliquely orientations with respect to the cylindrical drop. In addition, by tuning particle properties to achieve parallel alignment of the rods, we show that the cylindrical drop geometry favors tip-to-tip assembly of the rods, not just for cylinders, but also for ellipsoids and triblock patchy rods. Finally, for triblock patchy rods with larger contact line undulations, we can achieve strong spatial confinement of the rods transverse to the cylindrical drop due to the capillary repulsion between the contact line undulations of the particle and the pinned contact lines of the sessile drop. Our capillary assembly method allows us to manipulate the configuration of single and multiple rod-like particles and therefore offers a facile strategy for organizing such particles into useful functional materials.

Coupled Anisotropic Magneto-Mechanical Material Model for Structured Magnetoactive Materials.

Project description:Adaptability of properties of magnetic materials such as magnetorheological (MR) fluids, MR elastomers (MRE), and other magneto-active (MA) materials drives scientific activities worldwide, trying to broaden the fields of application of such materials. In our work, we focused on the utilization and implementation of existing material models to realize a praxis-oriented coupled anisotropic material model for the commercial finite element (FE) software ABAQUS taking into account magneto-mechanical interactions. By introducing this material model, a first step is done to predict and optimize the behavior of MA materials.

Behavior of colloidal gels made of thermoresponsive anisotropic nanoparticles.

Project description:Amongst colloidal gels, those designed by the assembly of anisotropic colloidal particles tend to form fibrillar gels and are attracting interest as artificial cell growth environments since they have a structure reminiscent of biological extracellular matrices. Their properties can be tuned by controlling the size, shape, and rigidity of the nanoparticles used during their formation. Herein, the relationship between the physical and mechanical properties of the nanocolloidal building blocks and the properties of the resulting gels is investigated. Thermoresponsive particles with different aspect ratios and controlled rigidity were prepared, and the gelation and the properties of the resulting gels were studied. The results show how the aspect ratio and rigidity of polymer colloids tune the properties of the gels. An increase in the aspect ratio of the nanocolloid used led to a sol-gel transition observed at lower particle concentration, but an increase in the rigidity of the nanocolloids delayed the sol-gel transition to higher concentration. However, at a constant concentration, increases in the anisotropy produced gels with higher modulus and lower yield strain. Similarly, an increase in rigidity of the colloids increased the modulus and reduced the yield strain of the resulting gels.

Anisotropic swelling wound dressings with vertically aligned water absorptive particles.

Project description:A multi-layer solution casting method was utilized to fabricate a three-layer wound dressing film consisting of a wound contact layer, an absorbing layer and a backing layer. The absorbing layer, whose function is to absorb and retain the exudate thus providing a moist environment for wound healing, was made of superabsorbent particles and a thermoplastic polyurethane matrix. In this study, the superabsorbent particles were aligned into chains whose axes oriented along the thickness direction of the film by an external electric field. This structure could minimize the lateral swelling of the absorbing layer while preferentially expanding in the thickness direction during the water absorption process, and therefore eliminate the lateral stress or shear induced friction between the films and the wound. When compared to the wound dressing films with non-aligned particles, the films with aligned particles could achieve up to 33% smaller lateral expansion. The effect of particle shape on anisotropic swelling was also investigated, and the rod-like particles with higher aspect ratio were more effective at improving the anisotropic swelling and reducing lateral expansion compared to irregular-shaped particles. Additionally, the imprinted patterns on the contact layer resulting from the electric field alignment process promoted the efficiency of absorbing and transporting the exudate into the absorbing layer.

The effect of saccharides on equilibrium swelling of thermo-responsive gels.

Project description:Mechanical and optical properties of thermo-responsive (TR) gels change drastically at their volume phase transition temperature. As the critical temperature is strongly affected by the presence of small amounts of additives in aqueous solutions, TR gels can be employed as sensors for detection and recognition of multiple analytes (from specific ions to hazardous biochemicals to pathogenic proteins) and actuators for biomedical applications. A simplified mean-field model is developed for equilibrium swelling of TR gels in aqueous solutions of additives. Its advantage is that the model involves a relatively small (compared with the conventional approaches) number of material constants and accounts for changes in the thermo-mechanical response at transition from the swollen to collapsed state. The ability of the model to describe experimental swelling diagrams and to predict the influence of additives on the equilibrium degree of swelling and the volume phase transition temperature of TR gels is confirmed by comparison of observations on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel in aqueous solutions of saccharides (glucose, sucrose and galactose) with results of numerical analysis.
