Expression of Human Endogenous Retrovirus Group K (HERV-K) HML-2 Correlates with Immune Activation of Macrophages and Type I Interferon Response.

ABSTRACT: Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) comprise about 8.3% of the human genome and are capable of producing RNA molecules that can be sensed by pattern recognition receptors, leading to the activation of innate immune response pathways. The HERV-K (HML-2) subgroup is the youngest HERV clade with the highest degree of coding competence. Its expression is associated with inflammation-related diseases. However, the precise HML-2 loci, stimuli, and signaling pathways involved in these associations are not well understood or defined. To elucidate HML-2 expression on a locus-specific level, we used the retroelement sequencing tools TEcount and Telescope to analyze publicly available transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) sequencing data sets of macrophages tre
