An investigation of the relationships between suicidal ideation, psychache, and meaning in life using network analysis.

ABSTRACT: Previous studies have investigated the relationships between psychache or meaning in life and suicidal ideation based on sum score of corresponding scale. However, this practice has hampered the fine-grained understanding of their relationships. This network analysis study aimed to conduct a dimension-level analysis of these constructs and the relationships among them in a joint framework, and identify potential intervention targets to address suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation, psychache, and meaning in life were measured using self-rating scales among 738 adults. A network of suicidal ideation, psychache, and meaning in life was constructed to investigate the connections between dimensions and calculate the expected influence and bridge expected influence of each node. "Psychache" was positively linked to "sleep" and "despair", while "presence of meaning in life" had negative associations with "psychache", "despair", and "pessimism". The most important central nodes were "sleep" and "despair", and the critical bridge nodes were "presence of meaning in life" and "psychache". These preliminary findings uncover the pathological pathways underlying the relationships between psychache, meaning in life, and suicidal ideation. The central nodes and bridge nodes identified may be potential targets for effectively preventing and intervening against the development and maintenance of suicidal ideation.

Project description:BackgroundSuicide ideation (SI) has become a serious social issue worldwide, and research has found a certain correlation between negative life events (NLE) and SI. Nevertheless, this relationship is still not clear among Chinese adolescents, a special population. Hence, this investigation performed a meta-analysis of observational research on the correlation between NLE and SI among adolescents in China, to further clarify the association.MethodsWe performed an extensive search on seven electronic databases starting from their establishment until March 10, 2023. The research mainly focused on cross-sectional studies conducted on samples of Chinese adolescents. To examine the association between NLE and SI, a meta-analysis model using random effects was utilized. To investigate moderating factors such as age, region, assessment tools for SI, and year of publication, subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed. The AHRQ evaluated the quality of the study. The synthesis of data was conducted utilizing STATA software (version 16).ResultsUltimately, a total of 30 cross-sectional studies were selected for this analysis, including 39,602 individuals in the participant sample. The results showed that NLE was moderately positively correlated with SI among Chinese adolescents (r = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.26, 0.32). In addition, this relationship was moderated by regional differences and the measurement tool used for SI. Studies conducted in Western China showed a higher correlation coefficient than those conducted in Eastern and Central China. Moreover, research conducted with the SSIOSS demonstrated a stronger correlation coefficient compared to studies utilizing the BSI-CV or other assessment instruments.ConclusionThis meta-analysis indicates that NLE is linked to SI in Chinese teenagers, especially those residing in Western regions of China. Identifying and intervening in NLE and associated risk factors are crucial to prevent suicide within this demographic.

Project description:BackgroundPatients with late-life depression (LLD) with suicidal ideation (SI) often have more explicit suicide plans, and suicide attempts among older adults are more highly lethal than in other age groups. Increasing evidence suggests that people with SI in depression exhibit abnormal brain network connectivity; however, the relationship between suicidal ideation in LLD and brain network dynamics is still unclear.MethodsWe recruited patients with LLD and SI (LLD-SI), patients with LLD without SI (LLD-NSI), and age-matched healthy older adults. We collected 64-channel resting state electroencephalography (EEG) recordings of all participants and used microstate analysis to explore large-scale brain network dynamics.ResultsWe included 33 patients with LLD-SI, 29 patients with LLD-NSI, and 31 controls. We observed abnormal microstate parameters in the LLD-SI group, characterized by higher duration (p = 0.04), occurrence (p = 0.009), and contribution (p = 0.001) of microstate C (reflecting activity of the salience network), compared with the LLD-NSI group, as well as higher occurrence (p = 0.03) and contribution (p = 0.009) of microstate C compared with the control group. Furthermore, transition probabilities from microstate class A to D (r = -0.466, p = 0.04) and class D to A (r = -0.506, p = 0.02) (involving coupling and sequential activation of auditory and executive control network) were negatively correlated with completion time of Stroop Colour and Word Test Part C (a neuropsychological test of executive function) in the LLD-SI group.LimitationsThe sample size was relatively small, the cross-sectional nature of this study prohibited exploring the causal relationship between abnormal microstate dynamics and suicidal ideation, and we did not include medication-naive patients with first-episode LLD.ConclusionThe study reveals altered microstate dynamics among patients with LLD-SI, compared with patients with LLD-NSI and controls. Our findings suggest that microstate dynamics could serve as potential neurobiomarkers for identifying SI in LLD.
