Bloch points in nanostrips.

ABSTRACT: Complex magnetic materials hosting topologically non-trivial particle-like objects such as skyrmions are under intensive research and could fundamentally change the way we store and process data. One important class of materials are helimagnetic materials with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Recently, it was demonstrated that thin nanodisks consisting of two layers with opposite chirality can host a single stable Bloch point of two different types at the interface between the layers. Using micromagnetic simulations we show that FeGe nanostrips consisting of two layers with opposite chirality can host multiple coexisting Bloch points in an arbitrary combination of the two different types. We show that the number of Bloch points that can simultaneously coexist depends on the strip geometry and the type of the individual Bloch points. Our simulation results allow us to predict strip geometries suitable for an arbitrary number of Bloch points. We show an example of an 80-Bloch-point configuration verifying the prediction.

Chiral Optical Properties of Mobius Graphene Nanostrips.

Project description:The advancement of optical technology demands the development of chiral nanostructures with a strong dissymmetry of optical response. Here, we comprehensively analyze the chiral optical properties of circular twisted graphene nanostrips, with a particular emphasis on the case of a Möbius graphene nanostrip. We use the method of coordinate transformation to analytically model the electronic structure and optical spectra of the nanostrips, while employing the cyclic boundary conditions to account for their topology. It is found that the dissymmetry factors of twisted graphene nanostrips can reach 0.01, exceeding the typical dissymmetry factors of small chiral molecules by 1-2 orders of magnitude. The results of this work thus demonstrate that twisted graphene nanostrips of Möbius and similar geometries are highly promising nanostructures for chiral optical applications.

Voltage-current properties of superconducting amorphous tungsten nanostrips.

Project description:The voltage-current (V-I) characteristics of tungsten (W) strips patterned by focused-ion-beam assisted deposition were studied at different temperatures and various magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the strips. At fields of 1 Tesla (T) and 2 T, a scaling behavior was observed in V-I isotherms, which can be fitted by quasi-three-dimensional (quasi-3D) vortex-glass (VG) to liquid transition theory.

Parallel magnetic field suppresses dissipation in superconducting nanostrips.

Project description:The motion of Abrikosov vortices in type-II superconductors results in a finite resistance in the presence of an applied electric current. Elimination or reduction of the resistance via immobilization of vortices is the "holy grail" of superconductivity research. Common wisdom dictates that an increase in the magnetic field escalates the loss of energy since the number of vortices increases. Here we show that this is no longer true if the magnetic field and the current are applied parallel to each other. Our experimental studies on the resistive behavior of a superconducting Mo0.79Ge0.21 nanostrip reveal the emergence of a dissipative state with increasing magnetic field, followed by a pronounced resistance drop, signifying a reentrance to the superconducting state. Large-scale simulations of the 3D time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model indicate that the intermediate resistive state is due to an unwinding of twisted vortices. When the magnetic field increases, this instability is suppressed due to a better accommodation of the vortex lattice to the pinning configuration. Our findings show that magnetic field and geometrical confinement can suppress the dissipation induced by vortex motion and thus radically improve the performance of superconducting materials.

Third type of domain wall in soft magnetic nanostrips.

Project description:Magnetic domain walls (DWs) in nanostructures are low-dimensional objects that separate regions with uniform magnetisation. Since they can have different shapes and widths, DWs are an exciting playground for fundamental research, and became in the past years the subject of intense works, mainly focused on controlling, manipulating, and moving their internal magnetic configuration. In nanostrips with in-plane magnetisation, two DWs have been identified: in thin and narrow strips, transverse walls are energetically favored, while in thicker and wider strips vortex walls have lower energy. The associated phase diagram is now well established and often used to predict the low-energy magnetic configuration in a given magnetic nanostructure. However, besides the transverse and vortex walls, we find numerically that another type of wall exists in permalloy nanostrips. This third type of DW is characterised by a three-dimensional, flux closure micromagnetic structure with an unusual length and three internal degrees of freedom. Magnetic imaging on lithographically-patterned permalloy nanostrips confirms these predictions and shows that these DWs can be moved with an external magnetic field of about 1 mT. An extended phase diagram describing the regions of stability of all known types of DWs in permalloy nanostrips is provided.

Current Induced Resistive State in Fe(Se,Te) Superconducting Nanostrips.

Project description:We study the current-voltage characteristics of Fe(Se,Te) thin films deposited on CaF2 substrates in form of nanostrips (width w ~ λ, λ the London penetration length). In view of a possible application of these materials to superconductive electronics and micro-electronics we focus on transport properties in small magnetic field, the one generated by the bias current. From the characteristics taken at different temperatures we derive estimates for the pinning potential U and the pinning potential range δ for the magnetic flux lines (vortices). Since the sample lines are very narrow, the classical creep flow model provides a sufficiently accurate interpretation of the data only when the attractive interaction between magnetic flux lines of opposite sign is taken into account. The observed voltages and the induced depression of the critical current of the nanostrips are compatible with the presence of a low number ([Formula: see text]) magnetic field lines at the equilibrium, a strongly inhomogeneous current density distribution at the two ends of the strips and a reduced Bean Livingston barrier. In particular, we argue that the sharp corners defining the bridge geometry represent points of easy magnetic flux lines injection. The results are relevant for creep flow analysis in superconducting Fe(Se,Te) nanostrips.

Creep turns linear in narrow ferromagnetic nanostrips.

Project description:The motion of domain walls in magnetic materials is a typical example of a creep process, usually characterised by a stretched exponential velocity-force relation. By performing large-scale micromagnetic simulations, and analyzing an extended 1D model which takes the effects of finite temperatures and material defects into account, we show that this creep scaling law breaks down in sufficiently narrow ferromagnetic strips. Our analysis of current-driven transverse domain wall motion in disordered Permalloy nanostrips reveals instead a creep regime with a linear dependence of the domain wall velocity on the applied field or current density. This originates from the essentially point-like nature of domain walls moving in narrow, line- like disordered nanostrips. An analogous linear relation is found also by analyzing existing experimental data on field-driven domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetised media.

Diffraction-Free Bloch Surface Waves.

Project description:Here, we demonstrate a diffraction-free Bloch surface wave sustained on all-dielectric multilayers that does not diffract after being passed through three obstacles or across a single mode fiber. It can propagate in a straight line for distances longer than 110 μm at a wavelength of 633 nm and could be applied as an in-plane optical virtual probe both in air and in an aqueous environment. Its ability to be used in water, its long diffraction-free distance, and its tolerance to multiple obstacles make this wave ideal for certain applications in areas such as the biological sciences, where many measurements are made on glass surfaces or for which an aqueous environment is required, and for high-speed interconnections between chips, where low loss is necessary.

Stable and manipulable Bloch point.

Project description:The prediction of magnetic skyrmions being used to change the way we store and process data has led to materials with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction coming into the focus of intensive research. So far, studies have looked mostly at magnetic systems composed of materials with single chirality. In a search for potential future spintronic devices, combination of materials with different chirality into a single system may represent an important new avenue for research. Using finite element micromagnetic simulations, we study an FeGe disk with two layers of different chirality. We show that for particular thicknesses of layers, a stable Bloch point emerges at the interface between two layers. In addition, we demonstrate that the system undergoes hysteretic behaviour and that two different types of Bloch point exist. These 'head-to-head' and 'tail-to-tail' Bloch point configurations can, with the application of an external magnetic field, be switched between. Finally, by investigating the time evolution of the magnetisation field, we reveal the creation mechanism of the Bloch point. Our results introduce a stable and manipulable Bloch point to the collection of particle-like state candidates for the development of future spintronic devices.

Programmable Bloch polaritons in graphene.

Project description:Efficient control of photons is enabled by hybridizing light with matter. The resulting light-matter quasi-particles can be readily programmed by manipulating either their photonic or matter constituents. Here, we hybridized infrared photons with graphene Dirac electrons to form surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and uncovered a previously unexplored means to control SPPs in structures with periodically modulated carrier density. In these periodic structures, common SPPs with continuous dispersion are transformed into Bloch polaritons with attendant discrete bands separated by bandgaps. We explored directional Bloch polaritons and steered their propagation by dialing the proper gate voltage. Fourier analysis of the near-field images corroborates that this on-demand nano-optics functionality is rooted in the polaritonic band structure. Our programmable polaritonic platform paves the way for the much-sought benefits of on-the-chip photonic circuits.

Superconductor to resistive state switching by multiple fluctuation events in NbTiN nanostrips.

Project description:We report on measurements of the switching current distributions on two-dimensional superconducting NbTiN strips that are 5 nm thick and 80 nm wide. We observe that the width of the switching current distributions has a non-monotonous temperature dependence, where it is constant at the lowest temperatures up to about 1.5 K, after which it increases with temperature until 2.2 K. Above 2.5 K any increase in temperature decreases the distribution width which at 4.0 K is smaller than half the width observed at 0.3 K. By using a careful analysis of the higher order moments of the switching distribution, we show that this temperature dependence is caused by switching due to multiple fluctuations. We also find that the onset of switching by multiple events causes the current dependence of the switching rate to develop a characteristic deviation from a pure exponential increase, that becomes more pronounced at higher temperatures, due to the inclusion of higher order terms.
