Mpox (previously known as monkeypox) is an infectious viral illness caused by the mpox virus (MPXV), an orthopoxvirus that belongs to the family <i>Poxviridae</i>. The symptoms of mpox in humans are similar to those of smallpox, although the mortality rate is lower.
