Taxonomic status and nomenclature of Cephalotaxuslanceolata (Cephalotaxaceae).

ABSTRACT: The nomenclature of Cephalotaxuslanceolata is controversial. After a thorough literature investigation, the nomenclatural problems have been resolved. This name was published in W. C. Cheng et al. (1975) and, although ascribed to "K. M. Feng", there is no suggestion that the descriptive material in the protologue was provided by K. M. Feng. Under Art. 46.5 of the ICN, this name should be attributed to K. M. Feng ex W. C. Cheng et al. but not to K. M. Feng alone. It has been claimed that the name is an illegitimate later homonym of one published by Beissner in 1901, but Beissner never accepted this name in any of his publications and so, under Art. 36.1, he did not validly publish an earlier homonym. Cephalotaxuslanceolatus was first validly published in W. C. Cheng et al. (1975).

Taxonomic status and nomenclature of Tanacetumclusii (Asteraceae, Asteroideae, Anthemideae), with comments on its distribution.

Project description:The paper provides nomenclatural and taxonomic accounts on Tanacetumclusii, a diploid species found in the Eastern Alps, the Carpathians, and the Dinarides, as well as comments on its current distribution. A careful examination of historic taxonomic literature showed that the combination T.clusii was first proposed by Kerner and predates a currently used much younger isonym by Soják (1871 vs. 1971). One specimen, a karyovoucher from WU, is designated here as an epitype for the illegitimate name Pyrethrumclusii, upon which Chrysanthemumclusii, the basionym of T.clusii, is based. This designation aims to avoid ambiguity in the taxonomic interpretation of its previously selected lectotype. Based on examining the original material, a voucher from SIB is designated as a lectotype of the synonymic name Chrysanthemumsubcorymbosum, a basionym of Tanacetumcorymbosumsubsp.subcorymbosum. The last name is the only correct one in the rank of subspecies when T.clusii is alternatively treated as a separate subspecies within T.corymbosum s.l. In addition, one specimen from SAMU is designated here as a neotype of Pyrethrumcorymbosumf.macrocephalum, a newly discovered heterotypic synonym of T.clusii. The analysis of the current species distribution showed that T.clusii is native to Switzerland (confirmed!), Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary (confirmed!), Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, and Romania. Although currently not accepted for Switzerland in literature, T.clusii could be confirmed for the Swiss canton of the Grisons. The same applies for Hungary where, apart from the Bükk Mts in literature, new localities from the Kőszeg and Mátra Mts are presented here. Additionally, the presence of T.clusii in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Montenegro and Turkey has not been confirmed and recorded mistakenly in different sources.

Nomenclature and taxonomic identities of Prunuszappeyana and P.zappeyanavar.subsimplex (Rosaceae).

Project description:The original specimens of both Prunuszappeyana and P.zappeyanavar.subsimplex were found to belong to more than one taxon. In addition, P.zappeyanavar.subsimplex was found to be invalid because, when the name was published, two separate descriptions were given to two cited collections, but not to the taxon, making the name unaccompanied with a description or diagnosis of this taxon (Art. 38.1 (a)). Therefore, a lectotype of P.zappeyana was designated under Art. 9.11 of ICN, by which P.zappeyana was placed in the synonymy of P.veitchii.

Plastome phylogenomics of Cephalotaxus (Cephalotaxaceae) and allied genera.

Project description:Background and aimsCephalotaxus is a paleo-endemic genus in East Asia that consists of about 7-9 conifer species. Despite its great economic and ecological importance, the relationships between Cephalotaxus and related genera, as well as the interspecific relationships within Cephalotaxus, have long been controversial, resulting in contrasting taxonomic proposals in delimitation of Cephalotaxaceae and Taxaceae. Based on plastome data, this study aims to reconstruct a robust phylogeny to infer the systematic placement and the evolutionary history of Cephalotaxus.MethodsA total of 11 plastomes, representing all species currently recognized in Cephalotaxus and two Torreya species, were sequenced and assembled. Combining these with previously published plastomes, we reconstructed a phylogeny of Cephalotaxaceae and Taxaceae with nearly full taxonomic sampling. Under a phylogenetic framework and molecular dating, the diversification history of Cephalotaxus and allied genera was explored.Key resultsPhylogenetic analyses of 81 plastid protein-coding genes recovered robust relationships between Cephalotaxus and related genera, as well as providing a well-supported resolution of interspecific relationships within Cephalotaxus, Taxus, Torreya and Amentotaxus. Divergence time estimation indicated that most extant species of these genera are relatively young, although fossil and other molecular evidence consistently show that these genera are ancient plant lineages.ConclusionsOur results justify the taxonomic proposal that recognizes Cephalotaxaceae as a monotypic family, and contribute to a clear-cut delineation between Cephalotaxaceae and Taxaceae. Given that extant species of Cephalotaxus are derived from recent divergence events associated with the establishment of monsoonal climates in East Asia and Pleistocene climatic fluctuations, they are not evolutionary relics.

Taxonomic review of Gasterophilus (Oestridae, Gasterophilinae) of the world, with updated nomenclature, keys, biological notes, and distributions.

Project description:A taxonomic review of Gasterophilus is presented, with nine valid species, 51 synonyms and misspellings for the genus and the species, updated diagnoses, worldwide distributions, and a summary of biological information for all species. Identification keys for adults and eggs are elaborated, based on a series of new diagnostic features and supported by high resolution photographs for adults. The genus is shown to have its highest species richness in China and South Africa, with seven species recorded, followed by Mongolia, Senegal, and Ukraine, with six species recorded.

Taxonomic status of the Columbia duskysnail (Truncatelloidea, Amnicolidae, Colligyrus).

Project description:Undescribed freshwater snails (Amnicolidae: Colligyrus) from the Mount Hood region (northwestern United States) identified as a new species (commonly known as the Columbia duskysnail) in grey literature have been provided federal protection under the "survey and manage" provisions of the Northwest Forest Plan and have been placed on conservation watch lists. However, there are no published studies of the identity of these snails aside from a molecular phylogenetic analysis which delineated a close relationship between the single sampled population and Colligyrusgreggi, which is distributed more than 750 km to the east of the Mount Hood area. Here we examine the taxonomic status of the Columbia duskysnail based on additional molecular sampling of mitochondrial DNA sequences (COI) and morphological evidence. We found that the Columbia duskysnail is not a monophyletic group and forms a strongly supported clade with Colligyrusgreggi. The COI divergence between these broadly disjunct groups (2.1%) was somewhat larger than that within Colligyrusgreggi (1.0%) but considerably less than that among the three currently recognized species of Colligyrus (8.7-12.1%). Additionally we found that the Columbia duskysnail and Colligyrusgreggi cannot be consistently differentiated by previously reported diagnostic characters (size and shape of shell spire, pigmentation of body and penis) and are closely similar in other aspects of morphology. Based on these results we conclude that the Columbia duskysnail is conspecific with Colligyrusgreggi.

Development and characterization of 15 microsatellite markers for Cephalotaxus fortunei (Cephalotaxaceae).

Project description:To survey population variation and the adaptive evolution of Cephalotaxus fortunei (Cephalotaxaceae), an endemic and endangered conifer in China, microsatellite markers were developed and characterized for this species. Based on the Fast Isolation by AFLP of Sequences COntaining repeats (FIASCO) protocol, 15 microsatellite markers were developed for C. fortunei, 13 of which were polymorphic within a sample of 75 individuals representing five natural populations. The number of alleles per locus ranged from one to seven. The expected and observed heterozygosities were 0.108-0.738 and 0.000-1.000, respectively. Ten polymorphic loci were also successfully amplified in C. oliveri. These polymorphic loci provide a valuable tool for population genetic analysis of C. fortunei, which will contribute to its management and conservation.

Taxonomic revision of the genus Phylacastus Fairmaire (Tenebrionidae, Eurynotina): shortfalls of anatomical nomenclature with notes on aedeagal homology.

Project description:The genus Phylacastus Fairmaire (Tenebrionidae, Blaptinae, Platynotini, Eurynotina) is revised. Two new species and one new synonymy are presented along with new diagnoses, descriptions, a distribution map, and key to species. The resulting species of Phylacastus are: P.ancoralium sp. nov., P.crypticoides Koch (= P.pretoriensis Koch syn. nov.), P.makskacymirowi sp. nov., P.rhodesianus Koch, and P.striolatus Fairmaire. Lectotypes are designated for the type species, P.striolatus, to fix the taxonomic status of the species and genus. As a result of examination and subsequent description of P.ancoralium sp. nov., a brief review and treatment of aedeagal morphology is presented. The nomenclature ("clavae" versus "laciniae") and phylogenetic occurrence of accessory structures of the paramere-median lobe area within Blaptinae Leach and Adelinina LeConte (Diaperinae, Diaperini) are discussed. New descriptive terminology (i.e., ancora [singular] and ancorae [plural]) is proposed for these aedeagal structures in Blaptinae to clarify their function and resolve past ambiguities. The morphology within representatives of Adelina Dejean, Alphitophagus Stephens, Gnatocerus Thunberg, and Sitophagus Mulsant is also briefly contrasted and outlined.

Genomic insights into the taxonomic status of the Bacillus cereus group.

Project description:The identification and phylogenetic relationships of bacteria within the Bacillus cereus group are controversial. This study aimed at determining the taxonomic affiliations of these strains using the whole-genome sequence-based Genome BLAST Distance Phylogeny (GBDP) approach. The GBDP analysis clearly separated 224 strains into 30 clusters, representing eleven known, partially merged species and accordingly 19-20 putative novel species. Additionally, 16S rRNA gene analysis, a novel variant of multi-locus sequence analysis (nMLSA) and screening of virulence genes were performed. The 16S rRNA gene sequence was not sufficient to differentiate the bacteria within this group due to its high conservation. The nMLSA results were consistent with GBDP. Moreover, a fast typing method was proposed using the pycA gene, and where necessary, the ccpA gene. The pXO plasmids and cry genes were widely distributed, suggesting little correlation with the phylogenetic positions of the host bacteria. This might explain why classifications based on virulence characteristics proved unsatisfactory in the past. In summary, this is the first large-scale and systematic study of the taxonomic status of the bacteria within the B. cereus group using whole-genome sequences, and is likely to contribute to further insights into their pathogenicity, phylogeny and adaptation to diverse environments.
