Karst grassland forage quality and its determinants in Guizhou Province of Southwest China.

ABSTRACT: Forage quality is a key property of grassland ecosystems. In this study, grassland forage qualities were measured at 373 sampling sites throughout Guizhou Province in the karst mountain region of Southwest China, and the factors affecting it were explored. The forage quality level of most plant species was categorized into four levels: (1) preferred forage species; (2) desirable forage species; (3) consumed but undesirable forage species; and (4) non-consumable or toxic forage species. High temperature and precipitation appeared to facilitate the growth of preferred forage species, but limited the growth of other plants. Increasing soil pH had a positive impact on the number and biomass of preferred forage plants, but a negative influence on other plants, especially non-consumable or toxic plants. Both GDP and population density had a positive correlation with the number and biomass of preferred forage species, while such correlations for other levels of forage species tended to be negative. Grazing could lead to a decrease in the preferred forage species. Therefore, it is suggested that by focusing on soil improvement in grassland and maintaining an appropriate grazing intensity, global warming and rapid economic growth in Guizhou Province will likely contribute to increase the forage quality of karst grasslands in Southwest China.

Project description:BackgroundThe change in the soil carbon bank is closely related to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the vegetation litter input can change the soil organic carbon content. However, due to various factors, such as soil type, climate, and plant species, the effects of vegetation restoration on the soil vary. Currently, research on aggregate-associated carbon has focused on single vegetation and soil surface layers, and the changes in soil aggregate stability and carbon sequestration under different vegetation restoration modes and in deeper soil layers remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the differences and relationships between stability and the carbon preservation capacity (CPC) under different vegetation restoration modes and to clarify the main influencing factors of aggregate carbon preservation.MethodsGrassland (GL), shrubland (SL), woodland (WL), and garden plots (GP) were sampled, and they were compared with farmland (FL) as the control. Soil samples of 0-40 cm were collected. The soil aggregate distribution, aggregate-associated organic carbon concentration, CPC, and stability indicators, including the mean weight diameter (MWD), fractal dimension (D), soil erodibility (K), and geometric mean diameter (GMD), were measured.ResultsThe results showed that at 0-40 cm, vegetation restoration significantly increased the >2 mm aggregate proportions, aggregate stability, soil organic carbon (SOC) content, CPC, and soil erosion resistance. The >2 mm fractions of the GL and SL were at a significantly greater proportion at 0-40 cm than that of the other vegetation types but the CPC was only significantly different between 0 and 10 cm when compared with the other vegetation types (P < 0.05). The >2 mm aggregates showed a significant positive correlation with the CPC, MWD, and GMD (P < 0.01), and there was a significant negative correlation with the D and K (P < 0.05). The SOC and CPC of all the vegetation types were mainly distributed in the 0.25-2 mm and <0.25 mm aggregate fractions. The MWD, GMD, SOC, and CPC all gradually decreased with increasing soil depth. Overall, the effects of vegetation recovery on soil carbon sequestration and soil stability were related to vegetation type, aggregate particle size, and soil depth, and the GL and SL restoration patterns may be more suitable in this study area. Therefore, to improve the soil quality and the sequestration of organic carbon and reduce soil erosion, the protection of vegetation should be strengthened and the policy of returning farmland to forest should be prioritized.

Project description:To explore the influence of different types of anthropogenic activity on the rivers, we investigate the major ion composition, sources and risk assessment of the karst stream (Youyu stream and Jinzhong stream), which are heavily influenced by mining activities and urban sewage, respectively. The chemical compositions of the Youyu stream water, which is heavily influenced by mining activities, are dominated by Ca2+ and SO42-. However, the chemical compositions of the Jinzhong stream water, which is heavily influenced by urban sewage, are dominated by Ca2+ and HCO3-. The Ca2+, Mg2+ and HCO3- in Jinzhong stream are mainly derived from rock weathering, while the Youyu stream is affected by acid mine drainage, and sulfuric acid is involved in the weathering process. Ion sources analysis indicates that the Na+, K+, NO3-, and Cl- in the Jinzhong stream mainly derive from urban sewage discharge; but NO3- and Cl- of the Youyu stream mainly derive from agricultural activities, and Na+, K+ are mainly from natural sources. The element ratios analysis indicates the ratio of SO42-/Mg2+ in Youyu stream (4.61) polluted by coal mine is much higher than that in Jinzhong stream (1.29), and the ratio of (Na++K++Cl-)/Mg2+ in Jinzhong stream (1.81) polluted by urban sewage is higher than Youyu stream (0.64). Moreover, the ratios of NO3-/Na+, NO3-/K+, and NO3-/Cl- in the agriculturally polluted Youyu stream were higher than those in the Jinzhong stream. We can identify the impact of human activities on streams by ion ratios (SO42-/Mg2+, (Na++K++Cl-)/Mg2+, NO3-/Na+, NO3-/K+, and NO3-/Cl-). The health risk assessment shows the HQT and HQN for children and adults are higher in Jinzhong stream than in Youyu stream and the total HQ value (HQT) of children was higher than one at J1 in the Jinzhong stream, which shows that children in Jinzhong stream basin are threatened by non-carcinogenic pollutants. Each HQ value of F- and NO3- for children was higher than 0.1 in the tributaries into Aha Lake, indicating that the children may also be potentially endangered.

Project description:Wildfires are unpredictable disturbances with profound effects on soil properties and microbial communities within forest ecosystems. However, knowledge of post-fire microbial communities in karst forests remains limited. In this study, microbial amplicon sequencing techniques were employed to investigate the impact of wildfires on the composition, diversity, function, and co-occurrence network of soil microbial communities in karst forest landscapes and to identify the key soil physicochemical factors affecting the post-fire microbial communities. The wildfire affected the fungal community to a greater extent than the bacterial community, with the former shifting from a dominance of Basidiomycota to Ascomycota at the phylum level, while the relative abundance of Actinobacteria increased significantly in the bacterial community. Moreover, the wildfire increased the α-diversity of the microbial community and changed the β-diversity. Network analysis indicated significant reductions in the complexity of microbial community networks and the hub microbiome in burned soils compared to those of unburned soils. Functional predictions indicated an increase in the highly abundant functional taxa of chemoheterotrophic and aerobic chemoheterotrophic bacteria, along with a significant rise in saprotrophic functional fungal taxa following the fire. In addition, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and soil water content emerged as key soil physicochemical factors affecting post-fire soil microbial communities in the karst forest. Overall, this study revealed the structural and functional characteristics of soil microbial communities and their key influencing factors after a fire in a karst forest, which will provide a valuable theoretical basis for ecosystem restoration after a wildfire.IMPORTANCEDespite the significant impacts of wildfires on forest ecosystems, most existing studies have largely focused on boreal and Mediterranean coniferous forest types, with limited research on the impacts of coniferous and broadleaf forest types in subtropical karst regions. This study reveals the effects of wildfires on soil microbial communities of coniferous and broadleaf forest types in a karst forest. The results of this study not only improve the understanding of the effects of wildfires on the composition, diversity, function, and network of soil microbial communities but also provide a meaningful theoretical basis for post-fire ecosystem restoration in the karst forest.

Project description:Soil quality assessment is important for karst ecosystems where soil erosion is significant. A large amount of vegetation restoration has been implemented since the early 21st century in degraded karst areas across southwestern China. However, the impacts on soil quality of different restoration types rarely have been compared systematically. In the current study, we investigated the soil quality after a number of vegetation restoration projects as well as their adjacent cropland by analyzing soil samples. Six vegetation restoration types were evaluated, including one natural restoration (natural shrubland, protected for 13 years), three economic forests (4 years Eucalyptus robusta, 4 years Prunus salicina and 6 years Zenia insignis) and two mixed forests (1 year Juglans regia-crop and 13 years Toona sinensis-Pennisetum purpureum ). We evaluated the benefits of different restoration types more accurately by setting each adjacent cropland as the control and setting the variation between the corresponding restored and control site as the evaluation object so that the background differences of six sites could be eliminated. The results indicated that natural shrubland, Toona sinensis-Pennisetum purpureum and Zenia insignis were effective in improving soil quality index (SQI) in degraded karst cropland largely due to their higher SOC and TN content. The variation of SQI (VSQI) of natural shrubland was significantly higher than that in Eucalyptus robusta, Prunus salicina and Juglans regia-crop in total soil layer (0-30 cm) (P < 0.05), indicating natural shrubland had better capacity to improve soil quality. The boosting regression tree model revealed that vegetation restoration type explained 73.49% and restoration time explained 10.30% of the variation in VSQI, which confirmed that vegetation restoration type and restoration time are critical for achieving soil reserves. Therefore, it is vital to select appropriate vegetation type in restoration projects and recovery for a long time in order to achieve better soil quality. The current study provides a theoretical basis on which to assess the effects of different vegetation restoration types on the heterogeneous degraded karst areas.

Project description:BackgroundCamellia sinensis is an important cash crop in southwestern China, with soil organic carbon playing a vital role in soil fertility, and microorganisms contributing significantly to nutrient cycling, thus both of them influencing tea tree growth and development. However, existing studies primarily focus on soil organic carbon, neglecting carbon fractions, and the relationship between soil organic carbon fractions and microbial communities is unclear. Consequently, this study aims to clarify the impact of different tea planting durations on soil organic carbon fractions and microbial communities and identify the main factors influencing microbial communities. It provides a theoretical basis for soil quality evaluation in the study area and scientific guidance for tea plantation management, thus fostering the region's economic sustainability.MethodsThis study selected tea plantations with different tea planting durations of 3-5 years (Y5), 12-16 years (Y15), 18-22 years (Y20), 40-42 years (Y40), and 48-50 years (Y50), as research subjects and adjacent uncultivated forest without a history of tea planting (CK) served as controls. Soil organic carbon (SOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), easily oxidizable organic carbon (EOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and bacterial diversity were measured in the 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm soil layers, respectively.ResultsCompared to the adjacent uncultivated forest (CK), the soil organic carbon (SOC), easily oxidizable carbon (EOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) contents in a 40-year tea plantation significantly increased. Nonetheless, the microbial biomass carbon (MBC) content notably decreased. POC/SOC ratios rose with prolonged planting, signifying enhanced conversion of organic carbon into particulate forms. Bacterial community diversity peaked at 15 years and declined by 40 years post-planting and after tea planting dominated by Acidobacteriota, Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteriota in the tea garden. FAPROTAX analysis highlighted aerobic and anaerobic chemoheterotrophy, cellulolysis, and nitrogen fixation as key bacterial functions. POC and MBC significantly influenced bacterial community structure. In conclusion, tea plantation soil exhibited the highest organic carbon content at 40 years of tea planting, indicating strong carbon accumulation capacity. However, soil acidification in the tea plantation may affect changes in organic carbon and bacterial community. Therefore, in the tea planting process, it is necessary to improve the management system of tea plantations to ensure the maintenance of a good ecological environment in the tea plantation soil, thus achieving sustainable development of the tea industry in the region.
