Heme-copper oxidases (HCOs) utilize tyrosine (Tyr) to donate one of the four electrons required for the reduction of O<sub>2</sub> to water in biological respiration, while tryptophan (Trp) is speculated to fulfill the same role in cyt <i>bd</i> oxidases.
