Relationship between perception of emotional home atmosphere and fruit and vegetable consumption in European adolescents: results from the I.Family survey.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

Consumption of fruits and vegetables (F&V) among adolescents falls below recommendations in many Western countries. The impact of social and emotional aspects of family life on adolescent dietary behaviour may contribute to this, yet remains under-investigated. The present study examines the association between adolescents' perceptions of emotional home atmosphere (EHA) and their F&V consumption frequency.

Design

An FFQ was used to assess F&V consumption frequency. EHA was assessed by an eight-item measure with three subscales: perceived home warmth, strictness and relational tension. EHA subscales were used as binary variables: a score equal to or above the median value was considered as a higher perception, while a score below the median was considered as a lower perception of the EHA in question. Country differences in meeting the European 5-a-day recommendations were described. Further, the association between EHA and F&V consumption frequency was investigated using multiple linear regression.

Setting

Regional examination centres in eight European countries.

Participants

Adolescents (n 3196) aged 12-18 years.

Results

The mean F&V consumption frequency was 3·27 (sd 2·84) times/d. Only 16·1 % of boys and 18 % of girls in our study sample met the recommendation of five F&V daily. After controlling for age, sex, education level of the parents and country of origin, perceived home warmth was associated with a 16 (95 % CI 9, 22) % higher F&V consumption frequency (P < 0·001).

Conclusions

F&V consumption frequency was suboptimal in the survey areas. Interventions targeting perceived warmth as a component of EHA could potentially have a positive effect on adolescents' dietary behaviour.

Project description:BackgroundFruits and vegetables are primary sources of vitamins and minerals that may alleviate the risk of chronic illnesses. However, Indian adolescents consume inadequate amounts of fruits and vegetables, with less than 10% meeting recommendations. Micronutrient deficiencies are a major public health problem in India. For example, the prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia and Vitamin A deficiency in adolescents is 28.5% and 14.4%, respectively. To promote fruit and vegetable consumption among Indian adolescents, we need to identify the factors which may influence the consumption. The aim of this qualitative inquiry was to explore perceived influences of fruit and vegetable consumption among Indian adolescents.MethodsUsing purposive sampling, adolescents aged 10-19 years were recruited from two public and two private (independent) schools in Varanasi, India. Face-to-face interviews along with the 'draw and tell' technique were used for data collection. Interviews were conducted in English as well as in Hindi depending on the preferences of the adolescents. The conversations were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcribed data were subjected to thematic analysis. Data were coded inductively, and themes were extracted using NVivo software program.ResultsA total of 58 adolescents (53% female; 74% urban) with mean age 13.6 years completed the interviews. Nine major themes and associated sub-themes emerged, including: (i) Sensory properties (i.e., taste, color, flavor, texture); (ii) Health and immunity; (iii) Allergy; (iv) Home food environment (i.e., influence of mothers, availability and accessibility of fruits and vegetables); (v) Cost; (vi) Food preparation; (vii) Influence of peers; (viii) School food environment; (ix) Proclivity for energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods and beverages.ConclusionsThe emerging themes and sub-themes show that multiple factors are likely to affect fruit and vegetable consumption in adolescents, aligning with literature on adolescent fruit and vegetable consumption in international settings. Behavioral interventions should be designed to create enabling environments to encourage fruit and vegetable consumption in Indian adolescents by removing barriers at the individual, household, and community levels, thereby reducing the enduring prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies.

Project description:BackgroundInsufficient sleep has been associated with weight gain and metabolic dysregulation, with one suggested mechanism being through reduction in diet quality. Experimental evidence supports a causal effect of sleep timings on diet but this may not be applicable to a free-living adolescent population. In this analysis we use daily measures of sleep timings and diet quality, to examine the effect of sleep duration and timing on diet quality the following day among free-living adolescents.MethodsThe ROOTS study is a prospective cohort recruited from secondary schools in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk (UK). Participants (n = 815) at mean age 15.0y (SD 0.3y) completed a diet diary and wore a combined heart rate and accelerometer device over 4 consecutive days. Sleep duration and timing (midpoint) were derived from acceleration and heart rate traces, while daily energy density and fruit and vegetable intake were calculated from dietary data. Analyses were performed at day-level (1815 person-days). Multilevel random effects models were used to test associations between sleep each night and subsequent day diet, with daily sleep and diet measures nested within individuals and schools, and adjusted for day-level and individual-level confounding variables.ResultsAdolescents slept a mean of 7.88 hrs (SD 1.10) per night, reporting a mean energy density of 2.12 kcal/g (SD 0.48) and median energy-adjusted daily fruit and vegetable intake of 137.3 g (IQR 130.4). One hour shorter sleep duration was associated with lower intake of fruit and vegetables (-6.42 g, 95%CI -1.84, -10.99) the following day. An association with higher dietary energy density (0.016 kcal/g, 95%CI 0.034, -0.002) the following day was observed but did not reach statistical significance. Sleep timing was not associated with either fruit and vegetable intake (-2.52 g/d, 95%CI -7.66, 2.62) or dietary energy density (-0.001 kcal/g, 95%CI -0.022, 0.020).ConclusionsOur observational findings from a free-living adolescent population support the experimental evidence for a causal role of sleep on diet, with shorter sleep duration at night leading to a small decrease in diet quality the following day. These findings support experimental evidence to suggest inclusion of sleep duration as one component of interventions designed to improve diet quality and weight status in adolescents.

Project description:BackgroundFruits and vegetables, foods rich in flavonoids and antioxidants, have been associated with lower risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress in adults. Markers of inflammation and oxidative stress are predictors of coronary heart disease risk; however, it is unknown whether these markers are related to dietary flavonoid and antioxidant intake in youth.ObjectiveTo determine whether greater intakes of fruit and vegetables, antioxidants, folate, and total flavonoids were inversely associated with markers of inflammation and oxidative stress in 285 adolescent boys and girls aged 13 to 17 years.DesignIn this cross-sectional study conducted between February 1996 and January 2000, diet was assessed by a 127-item food frequency questionnaire. Height and weight measurements were obtained and a fasting blood sample drawn. Spearman partial correlation analyses evaluated the relation of intakes of fruit and vegetables, antioxidants, folate, and flavonoids with markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and 15-keto-dihydro-PGF(2alpha) metabolite and oxidative stress (urinary 8-iso prostaglandin F(2alpha), an F(2)-isoprostane), adjusting for age, sex, race, Tanner stage, energy intake, and body mass index.ResultsUrinary F(2)-isoprostane was inversely correlated with intakes of total fruit and vegetables, vitamin C, beta carotene, and flavonoids. Serum C-reactive protein was significantly inversely associated with intakes of fruit (r=-0.19; P=0.004), vitamin C (r=-0.13, P=0.03), and folate (r=-0.18; P=0.004). Serum interleukin-6 was inversely associated with intakes of legumes, vegetables, beta carotene, and vitamin C. Serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha was inversely associated with beta carotene (r=-0.14, P=0.02) and luteolin (r=-0.15, P=0.02).ConclusionStudy results show that the beneficial effects of fruit and vegetable intake on markers of inflammation and oxidative stress are already present by early adolescence and provide support for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans "to consume five or more servings per day" of fruits and vegetables to promote beneficial cardiovascular health.
