Project description:It is a well-established fact that unfavourable social and economic conditions have a negative impact on health and longevity. Recent findings suggest that this is also true of age-related dementias. Yet most common indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) say very little about the actual mechanisms at play in disease development. The present paper explores five work exposure characteristics, all of which have a clear social gradient, that could potentially shed further light on the relationship between SES and dementia. Specifically, it investigates whether these exposures could moderate the impact of a well-known genetic risk factor: the APOE ɛ4 allele. The empirical analyses are based on data from a Swedish population study (n = 1019). Main occupation was linked to The Job Exposure Matrix to estimate the individuals' exposure to the following work environment factors: work control, support, psychological demands, physical demands and job hazards. All analyses were conducted using binary logistic regression and focused specifically on gene-work exposure interactions. A significant main effect of work control on dementia risk was detected for males (OR = 0.68; p< 0.05), but not for females. However, control was found to significantly moderate the effect of APOE ɛ4 in both genders, albeit in different ways. These findings do not only underscore the importance of considering interactions between social and genetic risk factors to better understanding multifactorial diseases such as dementia. They also propose that gender- and class-based inequities interact, and hence must be considered simultaneously, also in relation to this particular disease.

Project description:Biopsychosocial models are currently accepted for study of low back pain (LBP), but there is little evidence investigating socioeconomic status (SES) influence on disability, pain intensity, and physical impairment. The present study examined SES (income and education) and fear-avoidance model (fear-avoidance beliefs and pain catastrophizing) for their influence on disability, pain intensity and physical impairment.Cohort study, where patients (n = 108) were referred to physical therapy for treatment of acute or sub-acute LBP and completed standard questionnaires.SES had no statistically significant associations with disability, pain intensity, or physical impairment. Moderation analysis indicated that the interaction between fear-avoidance beliefs about work and SES accounted for significant amount of variance in disability scores (Beta = -0.24, t = -2.71, P = 0.008). The interaction indicated that people in the low SES group experienced a higher association of fear avoidance beliefs and disability at baseline, 4 weeks, and 6 months. Other moderation results between psychological factors and SES were not observed for pain intensity and physical impairment.This study adds to the growing literature examining biopsychosocial models by considering SES. Our results suggest SES had a minimal influence on pain intensity and physical impairment, but did interact with fear-avoidance beliefs to influence disability.

Project description:ObjectivesSocioeconomic status (SES) and neighborhood context are influential predictors of adolescent sleep, yet little is known about how they may interact to influence sleep. We examined multiple dimensions of family SES as moderators of associations between neighborhood risk and multiple sleep parameters.MethodsParticipants were 323 adolescents (Mage = 17.4 years, SD = 0.86; 48% male; 60% White/European American, 40% Black/African American). Sleep was assessed using 7 nights of actigraphy from which sleep duration (minutes from onset to wake time), efficiency, long wake episodes, and variability in minutes over the week were derived. Youth reported on their sleep/wake problems and sleepiness, as well as their perceptions of safety and violence in their neighborhoods. Parents reported on SES indices, including income-to-needs ratio and perceived financial stability.ResultsLower SES (income-to-needs, perceived financial stability) was associated with lower sleep efficiency and more frequent long wake episodes. Lower neighborhood safety and greater community violence concerns were related to greater subjective sleep problems. Moderation effects illustrated two general patterns. For actigraphy-derived sleep variables, lower neighborhood safety was associated with poor sleep only among youth from lower-income families. For subjective sleep/wake problems and daytime sleepiness, associations between neighborhood risk and sleep difficulties were pronounced for higher SES youth, while lower SES youth had greater sleep problems regardless of neighborhood factors.ConclusionsFindings suggest that several dimensions of SES and neighborhood risk may be consequential for adolescents' sleep. Moderation effects highlight the significance of considering multiple contextual influences towards a better understanding of adolescents' sleep.

Project description:Background/objectivesUnhealthy dietary habits are associated with chronic non-communicable diseases and may contribute to increased mortality in all countries of the world. Food environments determine the accessibility, availability, and promotion of food, thus playing an important role in people's diets, but they are context-dependent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the availability and accessibility of food in food outlets in different neighborhoods of the city of Alicante.MethodsCross-sectional study. Trained researchers conducted food store audits using the validated Nutrition Environment Measures Survey in Stores for Mediterranean contexts (NEMS-S-MED) tool. Data were collected from food stores within a socioeconomically diverse sample in Alicante (n = 63). We compared the availability and affordability of "healthier-less healthy" food pairs, scores between food store types (supermarkets, specialized, convenience stores, and others), and socioeconomic levels in Alicante in 2022.ResultsThe present study highlights that the food stores with the greatest availability and accessibility to healthy foods are supermarkets, as opposed to specialized stores and convenience stores. In addition, differences were found in the accessibility and availability of healthy foods by neighborhoods with different income levels, being more accessible in the residential neighborhood with the highest income level. Tourism could explain the differences in the food retail environment, with a high-income neighborhood showing similar results to low-income neighborhoods.ConclusionsThe results obtained invite reflection on the development and adoption of policy strategies that promote the availability and accessibility of healthy food in the most disadvantaged areas.

Project description:While socioeconomic disparities in the home language environment have been well established, the mechanisms explaining these disparities are poorly understood. One plausible mechanism is heightened stress. The current study investigated whether maternal perceived stress was 1) associated with measures of the home language environment, and 2) mediated the relation between socioeconomic disparities and the home language environment. Data from three independent studies were analyzed, which together comprised 322 mother-child dyads. Two studies included mothers and their six- to twelve-month-old infants (N = 227). The third included mothers and their five- to nine-year-old children (N = 95). Mothers reported their educational attainment, income, and stress. Language Environment Analysis (LENA) measured the home language environment. As has been previously reported, socioeconomic disparities were observed in adult words and conversational turns. Stress did not mediate these associations, nor was it associated with adult words or conversational turns. Alternate mechanisms for future exploration are discussed.

Project description:In the current study, we tested for Gene × Environment interactions in the association between pubertal timing and adolescent depression by examining how socioeconomic factors might moderate age at menarche's relation with depressive symptoms. Participants comprised 630 female twin and sibling pairs from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Consistent with previous studies, results showed that genetic predispositions toward later menarche were associated with fewer depressive symptoms and that genetic predispositions toward earlier menarche were associated with more depressive symptoms. However, this pattern was subtle and evident only in girls from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. Although girls from lower socioeconomic families showed the highest overall levels of depression, their symptoms appeared unrelated to timing of physical development through either a genetic or an environmental path.

Project description:While initial encoding of contextual memories involves the strengthening of hippocampal circuits, these memories progressively mature to stabilized forms in neocortex and become less hippocampus dependent. Although it has been proposed that long-term storage of contextual memories may involve enduring synaptic changes in neocortical circuits, synaptic substrates of remote contextual memories have been elusive. Here we demonstrate that the consolidation of remote contextual fear memories in mice correlated with progressive strengthening of excitatory connections between prefrontal cortical (PFC) engram neurons active during learning and reactivated during remote memory recall, whereas the extinction of remote memories weakened those synapses. This synapse-specific plasticity was CREB-dependent and required sustained hippocampal signals, which the retrosplenial cortex could convey to PFC. Moreover, PFC engram neurons were strongly connected to other PFC neurons recruited during remote memory recall. Our study suggests that progressive and synapse-specific strengthening of PFC circuits can contribute to long-term storage of contextual memories.

Project description:Objective: We examined the association between low socioeconomic position (SEP) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), and the mediating role of psychosocial work environment by using counterfactual mediation analysis. Methods: Data from 8,090 participants of The Maastricht Study were analysed. SEP indicators (education, income, occupation), self-reported psychosocial work stressors, (pre)diabetes by oral glucose tolerance test were measured at baseline. Incident T2DM was self-reported per annum up to 9 years. Cox regression and causal mediation analyses were performed. Results: 2.8% (N = 172) of the participants without T2DM at baseline reported incident T2DM. People with lower SEP more often had prevalent T2DM (e.g., education OR = 2.49, 95% CI: 2.16-2.87) and incident T2DM (e.g., education HR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.53-3.20) than higher SEP. Low job control was associated with prevalent T2DM (OR = 1.44 95% CI: 1.25-1.67). Job control partially explained the association between income and prevalent T2DM (7.23%). Job demand suppressed the associations of education and occupation with prevalent T2DM. The mediation models with incident T2DM and social support were not significant. Conclusion: Socioeconomic inequalities in T2DM were present, but only a small part of it was explained by the psychosocial work environment.

Project description:Susceptibility and resilience to mental disorders result from a complex choreography of gene-environment interactions with epigenetics at the intersection of external psychological stressors and internal biological systems. Increasing awareness of the growing disease burden influenced by daily life stress ("daily hassles"), work-related stress, and low socioeconomic status (SES) has resulted in a novel interest into their underlying molecular signatures. This review offers a brief outline of psychiatric epigenetics and a comprehensive overview of recent findings exploring the relationship of various occupational stressors and DNA methylation in epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) and in candidate gene studies including the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4; 5-HTTLPR), melatonin receptor 1A (MTNR1A), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), and the protein family of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs). Conceptual and methodological challenges of epigenetic investigations with a special focus on gene-environment interactions are highlighted and discussed. The findings are integrated into a pathophysiological framework featuring epigenetic plasticity factors and work-related stress as a possible central detrimental component targetable by workplace interventions. Finally, the potential of dynamic epigenetic biomarkers of treatment response to pharmacotherapy or psychotherapy is expanded upon.
