ABSTRACT: Uncertainties regarding the taxonomic status and biogeographical distribution of some species of the genus Emerita from the western Atlantic led to thorough examination of the subtle morphological differences between two coexistent species (E.brasiliensis Schmitt, 1935 and E.portoricensis Schmitt, 1935) along the Brazilian coast and compare them using two genetic markers. The molecular phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of the 16S rRNA and COI genes showed that individuals identified as E.portoricensis were clustered into two clades: one containing representatives from the Brazilian coast and another containing specimens distributed in Central America. Our molecular-based phylogeny, combined with a detailed morphological analysis, revealed the Brazilian population as a new species, which is described here as Emeritaalmeidai Mantelatto & Balbino, sp. nov. The number of species in the genus Emerita is now raised to 12, with five of them occurring in the western Atlantic, five in the Indo-Pacific, and two in the eastern Pacific.

Project description:The family Diogenidae Ortmann, 1892 is a diverse and abundance group of hermit crabs, but their systematics and phylogenetic relationships are highly complex and unresolved. Herein, we gathered nucleotide sequence data from two mitochondrial (16S rRNA and COI) and two nuclear (NaK and PEPCK) genes for a total of 2,308 bp in length across 38 species from six extant diogenid genera. Molecular data were combined with 41 morphological characters to estimate the largest phylogeny of diogenid hermit crabs to date with the aim of testing the proposed taxonomic scheme of Diogenidae and addressing intergeneric relationships within this family. Despite conflicts between mitochondrial and nuclear DNA trees, the combined-data tree reflects the contributions of each dataset, and improves tree resolution and support for internal nodes. Contrary to traditional classification, our total evidence revealed a paraphyletic Diogenidae based on internally nested representatives of Coenobitidae Dana, 1851. Within Diogenidae, the studied diogenid hermit crabs were split between two clades with high support, which contradicts recent morphological classification scheme for Diogenidae sensu lato based on fossil records. The genus Diogenes Dana, 1851 was found nested inside Paguristes Dana, 1851, which formed a clade being separated from the remainder, pointing towards paraphyly in Paguristes. In another clade, Dardanus Paulson, 1875 occupied a basal position relative to the other diogenids, while Calcinus Dana, 1851 and Clibanarius Dana, 1852 showed sister relationships and formed a cluster with Ciliopagurus Forest, 1995. Among the morphological characters examined, carapace shield and telson were identified as phylogenetically significant for grouping diogenid genera, while phylogenetic insignificance of gill number was evidenced by its mosaic pattern in diogenid phylogeny. The present study sheds light on the controversial generic phylogeny of Diogenidae and highlights the necessity for thorough taxonomic revisions of this family as well as some genera (e.g., Paguristes) to reconcile current classifications with phylogenetic relationships.

Project description:Continental- and regional-scale assessments of gaps in protected area networks typically use relatively coarse range maps for well documented species groups, creating uncertainty about the fate of unexamined biodiversity and providing insufficient guidance for land managers. By building habitat suitability models for a taxonomically diverse group of 2216 imperiled plants and animals, we revealed comprehensive and detailed protection opportunities in the conterminous United States. Summing protection-weighted range-size rarity (PWRSR, the product of the percent of modeled habitat outside of protected areas and the inverse of modeled habitat extent) uncovered novel patterns of biodiversity importance. Concentrations of unprotected imperiled species in places such as the northern Sierra Nevada, central and northern Arizona, the Rocky Mountains of Utah and Colorado, southeastern Texas, southwestern Arkansas, and Florida's Lake Wales Ridge have rarely if ever been featured in continental- and regional-scale analyses. Inclusion of diverse taxa (vertebrates, freshwater mussels, crayfishes, bumble bees, butterflies, skippers, and vascular plants) partially drove these new patterns. When analyses were restricted to groups typically included in previous studies (birds, mammals, and amphibians), up to 53% of imperiled species in other groups were left out. The finer resolution of modeled inputs (990 m) also resulted in a more geographically dispersed pattern. For example, 90% of the human population of the conterminous United States lives within 50 km of modeled habitat for one or more species with high PWRSR scores. Over one-half of the habitat for 818 species occurs within federally lands managed for biodiversity protection; an additional 360 species have over one-half of their modeled habitat on federal multiple use land. Freshwater animals occur in places with poorer landscape condition but with less exposure to climate change than other groups, suggesting that habitat restoration is an important conservation strategy for these species. The results provide fine-scale, taxonomically diverse inputs for local and regional priority-setting and show that although protection efforts are still widely needed on private lands, notable gains can be achieved by increasing protection status on selected federal lands.
