Project description:2D transition metal dichalcogenide MoS2 monolayer quantum dots (MoS2-QD) and their doped boron (B@MoS2-QD), nitrogen (N@MoS2-QD), phosphorus (P@MoS2-QD), and silicon (Si@MoS2-QD) surfaces have been theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) computation to understand their mechanistic sensing ability, such as conductivity, selectivity, and sensitivity toward NH3 gas. The results from electronic properties showed that P@MoS2-QD had the lowest energy gap, which indicated an increase in electrical conductivity and better adsorption behavior. By carrying out comparative adsorption studies using m062-X, ωB97XD, B3LYP, and PBE0 methods at the 6-311G++(d,p) level of theory, the most negative values were observed from ωB97XD for the P@MoS2-QD surface, signifying the preferred chemisorption surface for NH3 detection. The mechanistic studies provided in this study also indicate that the P@MoS2-QD dopant is a promising sensing material for monitoring ammonia gas in the real world. We hope this research work will provide informative knowledge for experimental researchers to realize the potential of MoS2 dopants, specifically the P@MoS2-QD surface, as a promising candidate for sensors to detect gas.

Project description:The high catalytic activity of cobalt-doped MoS2 (Co-MoS2) observed in several chemical reactions such as hydrogen evolution and hydrodesulfurization, among others, is mainly attributed to the formation of the CoMoS phase, in which Co occupies the edge-sites of MoS2. Unfortunately, its production represents a challenge due to limited cobalt incorporation and considerable segregation into sulfides and sulfates. We, therefore, developed a fast and efficient solid-state microwave irradiation synthesis process suitable for producing thin Co-MoS2 flakes (∼3-8 layers) attached on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide. The CoMoS phase is predominant in samples with up to 15 at% of cobalt, and only a slight segregation into cobalt sulfides/sulfates is noticed at larger Co content. The Co-MoS2 flakes exhibit a large number of defects resulting in wavy sheets with significant variations in interlayer distance. The catalytic performance was investigated by evaluating the activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and a gradual improvement with increased amount of Co was observed, reaching a maximum at 15 at% with an overpotential of 197 mV at -10 mA cm-2, and a Tafel slope of 61 mV dec-1. The Co doping had little effect on the HER mechanism, but a reduced onset potential and charge transfer resistance contributed to the improved activity. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using a rapid microwave irradiation process to produce highly doped Co-MoS2 with predominant CoMoS phase, excellent HER activity, and operational stability.

Project description:Development of advanced materials for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting is the key in utilization of renewable energy. In the present work, we have synthesized MoS2 nanoparticles embedded over the graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layer for superior catalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution process (HER). The nanocomposite materials are characterized using different spectroscopic and microscopic measurements. A Tafel slope of ∼40 mV/decade suggested the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism for the HER process with MoS2/GO composite as the catalyst, which indicated that electrochemical desorption of hydrogen is the rate-limiting step. The small Tafel slope indicates a promising electrocatalyst for HER in practical application. MoS2/GO composite material has shown superior catalytic behavior compared to that of MoS2/rGO composite material. The HER catalytic activity of the catalysts is explored using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) using the feedback and redox competition mode in SECM. The activation energy for HER activity was calculated, and the values are in the range of 17-6 kJ/mol. The lower value of activation energy suggested faster HER kinetics.

Project description:Electrochemical devices for efficient production of hydrogen as energy carrier rely still largely on rare platinum group metal catalysts. Chemically and structurally modified metal dichalcogenide MoS2 is a promising substitute for these critical raw materials at the cathode side where the hydrogen evolution reaction takes place. For precise understanding of structure and hydrogen adsorption characteristics in chemically modified MoS2 nanostructures, we perform comprehensive density functional theory calculations on transition metal (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) doping at the experimentally relevant MoS2 surfaces at substitutional Mo-sites. Clear benefits of doping the basal plane are found, whereas at the Mo- and S-edges complex modifications at the whole edge are observed. New insight into doping-enhanced activity is obtained and guidance is given for further experiments. We study a machine learning model to facilitate the screening of suitable structures and find a promising level of prediction accuracy with minimal structural input.

Project description:MoS2 materials have been extensively studied as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. In this study nanoparticulate MoS2 is explored as a HER catalyst through impact voltammetry. The onset potential was found to be -0.10 V (vs RHE) at pH 2, which was confirmed to be due to HER by scale-up of the impact experiment to generate and collect a sufficient volume of the gas to enable its identification as hydrogen via gas chromatography. This is in contrast to electrodeposited MoS2, which was found to be stable in pH 2 sulfuric acid solution with an onset potential of -0.29 V (vs RHE), in good agreement with literature. XPS was used to categorize the materials and confirm the chemical composition of both nanoparticles and electrodeposits, with XRD used to analyze the crystal structure of the nanoparticles. The early onset of HER was postulated from kinetic analysis to be due to the presence of nanoplatelets of about 1-3 trilayers participating in the impact reactions, and AFM imaging confirmed the presence of these platelets.

Project description:We present a new composite catalyst system of highly defective graphene quantum dots (HDGQDs)-doped 1T/2H-MoS2 for efficient hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). The high electrocatalytic activity, represented by an overpotential of 136.9 mV and a Tafel slope of 57.1 mV/decade, is due to improved conductivity, a larger number of active sites in 1T-MoS2 compared to that in 2H-MoS2, and additional defects introduced by HDGQDs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize both the 1T/2H-MoS2 and GQDs components while Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to identify the functional groups on the edge and defect sites in the HDGQDs. The morphology of the composite catalyst was also examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). All experimental data demonstrated that each component contributes unique advantages that synergistically lead to the significantly improved electrocatalytic activity for HER in the composite catalyst system.

Project description:Green hydrogen produced from solar energy could be one of the solutions to the growing energy shortage as non-renewable energy sources are phased out. However, the current catalyst materials used for photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) cannot compete with other renewable technologies when it comes to efficiency and production cost. Transition-metal dichalcogenides, such as molybdenum disulfides (MoS2), have previously proven to have electronic and optical properties that could tackle these challenges. In this work, optical properties, the d-band center, and Gibbs free energy are calculated for seven MoS2 polymorphs using first-principles calculations and density functional theory (DFT) to show that they could be suitable as photocatalysts for PWS. Out of the seven, the two polymorphs 3Ha and 2R1 were shown to have d-band center values closest to the optimal value, while the Gibbs free energy for all seven polymorphs was within 5% of each other. In a previous study, we found that 3Hb had the highest electron mobility among all seven polymorphs and an optimal bandgap for photocatalytic reactions. The 3Hb polymorphs were therefore selected for further study. An in-depth analysis of the enhancement of the electronic properties and the Gibbs free energy through substitutional doping with Al, Co, N, and Ni was carried out. For the very first time, substitutional doping of MoS2 was attempted. We found that replacing one Mo atom with Al, Co, I, N, and Ni lowered the Gibbs free energy by a factor of 10, which would increase the hydrogen evolution reaction of the catalyst. Our study further shows that 3Hb with one S atom replaced with Al, Co, I, N, or Ni is dynamically and mechanically stable, while for 3Hb, replacing one Mo atom with Al and Ni makes the structure stable. Based on the low Gibbs free energy, stability, and electronic bandgap 3Hb, MoS2 doped with Al for one Mo atom emerges as a promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting.

Project description:The structure and electronic properties of the molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayer upon water cluster adsorption are studied using density functional theory and the optical properties are further analyzed with the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). Our results reveal that the water clusters are electron acceptors, and the acceptor tendency tends to increase with the size of the water cluster. The electronic band gap of both pristine and defective MoS2 is rather insensitive to water cluster adsorbates, as all the clusters are weakly bound to the MoS2 surface. However, our calculations on the BSE level show that the adsorption of the water cluster can dramatically redshift the optical absorption for both pristine and defective MoS2 monolayers. The binding energy of the excitons of MoS2 is greatly enhanced with the increasing size of the water cluster and finally converges to a value of approximately 1.16 eV and 1.09 eV for the pristine and defective MoS2 monolayers, respectively. This illustrates that the presence of the water cluster could localize the excitons of MoS2, thereby greatly enhance the excitonic binding energy.

Project description:Producing hydrogen through water electrolysis is one of the most promising green energy storage and conversion technologies for the long-term development of energy-related hydrogen technologies. MoS2 is a very promising electrocatalyst which may replace precious metal catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, doughty-electronegative heteroatom defects (halogen atoms such as chlorine, fluorine, and nitrogen) were successfully introduced in MoS2 by using a large-scale, green, and simple ball milling strategy to alter its electronic structure. The physicochemical properties (morphology, crystallization, chemical composition, and electronic structure) of the doughty-electronegative heteroatom-induced defective MoS2 (N/Cl-MoS2) were identified using SEM, TEM, Raman, XRD, and XPS. Furthermore, compared with bulk pristine MoS2, the HER activity of N/Cl-MoS2 significantly increased from 442 mV to 280 mV at a current of 10 mA cm-2. Ball milling not only effectively reduced the size of the catalyst material, but also exposed more active sites. More importantly, the introduced doughty-electronegative heteroatom optimized the electronic structure of the catalyst. Therefore, the doughty-electronegative heteroatom induced by mechanical ball milling provides a useful reference for the large-scale production of green, efficient, and low-cost catalyst materials.

Project description:Atomic structures and electronic properties of MoS2/HfO2 defective interfaces are investigated extensively for future field-effect transistor device applications. To mimic the atomic layer deposition growth under ambient conditions, the impact of interfacial oxygen concentration on the MoS2/HfO2 interface electronic structure is examined. Then, the effect on band offsets (BOs) and the thermodynamic stability of those interfaces is investigated and compared with available relevant experimental data. Our results show that the BOs can be modified up to 2 eV by tuning the oxygen content through, for example, the relative partial pressure. Interfaces with hydrogen impurities as well as various structural disorders were also considered, leading to different behaviors, such as n-type doping, or introducing defect states close to the Fermi level because of the formation of hydroxyl groups. Then, our results indicate that for a well-prepared interface the electronic device performance should be better than that of other interfaces, such as III-V/high-κ, because of the absence of interface defect states. However, any unpassivated defects, if present during oxide growth, strongly affect the subsequent electronic properties of the interface. The unique electronic properties of monolayer-to-few-layered transition-metal dichalcogenides and dielectric interfaces are described in detail for the first time, showing the promising interfacial characteristics for future transistor technology.
